    1. [NJ] OCCUPATIONS
    2. Howdy - I found a reference during my search through various volumes of the NJ Archives series, which I thought I might share, about occupations and what they might mean. In volume No. 38, of the subset Calendar of Wills, is a 'Compiler's Note' attached to the will of Sarah WOODRUFF (NJA 39:423), of Greenwich Twsp., Cumberland Co., 'spinster' dated 31 Jan 1797, proved 20 Feb 1799, and which shows an explanation for why 'spinster' is there, attached. Since the abstract goes on then to state names of children and grandchildren, obviously the 'spinster' term is meant as an occupation - 'one who spins' - rather than an unmarried woman. Sarah was the widow of Enos, who's abstract appears in this same volume, dated 16 Nov 1794, proved 21 Jan 1796. Also consider the term - husbandman - as is seen attached to some other wills. For the longest time I thought it simply meant a 'husband' but came later to learn it meant 'one who breeds cattle' or other animals. Anyway, just thought you'd like to know! 1. [NJ] CAPE MAY CO History
    2. Howdy Folks! It's a new week, and a renewed opportunity to learn a wee bit more on the history of another county - CAPE MAY. I'll see what I can find of interest, but I believe the bulk of what may be learned will come from the membership at large. You are welcome to submit anything you'd like on that region - names of townships, and cities, when it was formed, famous places and people, even brick walls you might have in your 'tree' collections. Hopefully some have been through this wonderful part of New Jersey and can provide us some nice remembrances of their time there. Remember to place all surnames in CAPS. It really helps, as I've learned, to draw attention to it when one might otherwise scan over a name, and miss it. Anyway, I do hope your weekend was a safe one. Happy Trails... My identification of this man: first let me say that I am not completely sure I have identified this man correct, but he might be Abraham Brower b. 1735, s/o Abraham, s/o Uldrick, s/o Pieter, s/o Adam. His wife was named in the Will as Catherine. She might be Catharine Vonck. The sons named in the will are Peter and David. There is a Peter Brower taxed in 1790-95 at Saddle River, Bergen Co NJ, that location and New Barbados are almost interchanable. Catharine Brower, widow of Abraham, married Petrus Bogart 11-4-1790. This will above was prbated Nov 1, 1780, just 3 days prior to the re-marriage. So for this fact I am not sure of the indetification. No daughters are mentioned. Best regards, Lilly Martin >

    2. Historical and Genealogical Miscellany, Data Relating to the Settlement and Settlers of New York and New Jersey; John E. Stillwell, M. D., Volume I; New York, 1903. [JS1] Inscriptions from Friends' Meeting House Yard, Shrewsbury, N. J. [pp. 375-377]] "The stones in this yard are noticeable for their small size and absence of ornament. it was considered among this sect, perhaps more so formerly than now, a mark of pride and too great ostentation, to erect tablets over their dead. It is traditionary in Shrewsbury, that, a hundred years or more ago, when a number of Friends had too far departed from an observance of this rule, they were promptly brought to a realizing sense of their error, by a co-religionist, of the name of Parker. he, accompanied by his laboring men, applied sledge-hammers to the most prominent stones, and only ceased, when the debris of the many was thrown into the highway, as a warning to others. James Steen, Esq., of Eatontown, an antiquary of great diligence and ability, has in his possession a portion of a headstone which may be one of the relics of Friend Parker's onslaught. This stone is marked, M. P. 1715, and probably stood for Mary Parker. "There are doubtless many interred here, whose resting places were never marked, or, if so, only temporarily, by wooden tablets, of which no evidence now remains." In a message dated 5/5/2007 11:21:56 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: My question is: Since Camden county was created in 1844, and taken from Gloucester Co., does anyone know of any other townships or cities in Gloucester county which were included in the newer county, Camden? Yes---at the time the townships that became Camden County were: Delaware Township, Newton Township, Union Township, Gloucester Township, Winslow Township, and Waterford Township. Towns that existed in 1844 that became part of Camden County would include Camden City, Gloucester City, Blackwoodtown, Haddonfield, Blue Anchor, Long-a-Coming, Pennsauken, Milford, New Brooklyn (also called Seven Causeways). I'm looking at a map of Camden County from 1846--so my assumption is that it would be identical to the townships and towns in existence at the time of the formation of the county. 1. [NJ] NJ & Elsewhere 1806-1817
    2. The following is the first try at finding wills, inventories, etc., of folks who were either from other states or countries prior to settling in NJ, or who may have settled elsewhere after living in NJ. The material covers 1806 to 1817. PLEASE set your printer to 'LANDSCAPE' as this is the only way I could include what needed to be recorded. And like before, if anyone would like a transcription of any entry, you may request same at my offlist address [email protected] Please include the full line of text so I can find the reference, AND include the following phrase in the 'subject' line of your email: NJ & ELSEWHERE. This will help me keep these requests separate from the others, which are still being processed. Thanx in advance, and enjoy! 1. [NJ] Camden Co Question
    2. Howdy folks! In the course of extracting wills, inventories, etc., for folks from places other than New Jersey, I came across 2 entries for Camden, Gloucester county, in the volume covering 1814-1817 years. One was just of Camden, but the other was of Camden, Newton Twsp, Gloucester county. My question is: Since Camden county was created in 1844, and taken from Gloucester Co., does anyone know of any other townships or cities in Gloucester county which were included in the newer county, Camden? My thinking is, that if we can identify cities and townships once part of Gloucester county (or any other county for that matter) which are now part of Camden county, I might be able to create a list just for those entries which apply specifically for this region. And maybe be able to find same in earlier volumes too. Worth a try, no? Thanx for listening!!! 3. Jean, check out http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/webcat/genealogy.html. I know that if you went to the NJ State Archives you could look them both up yourself. Those dates are included in their holdings. The folks there are very helpful and will show you where to look. I don't know which dates they can do lookups for you. I know there are certain limitations.
