    2. In a message dated 6/4/2007 10:49:12 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Another thing I've been told by the NJ Archives is that Guardians were usually only appointed when there was a need to "protect" a sizeable estate left by the deceased parents. Since there were no Orphan Courts in the earlier years, this type of "appointment" would have been noted in other records, such as the Will Proving or Land titles. If there was no money or land involved, underage children were just "taken in" by relatives and/or close friends. Carol ----- Carol- I have not found this to always be the case. Just because it wasn't until a 1784 law that Orphans' Courts were established doesn't mean that other courts didn't process the same types of actions before that time. The prerogative court which later became an appelate court handled these matters. I have found many a guardianship record for children of deceased fathers of moderate means. Usually someone was appointed guardian to ensure the financial well-being of the minor children while the mother (provided she was still living) retained the custodial guardianship. There is some basic information about guardianship in the RootsWeb Guide leson 30: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson30.htm Joan ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. David, et al: Would you elaborate on the time range of these records? You show that the archived wills range from 1670-1817--how far back do the orphan records go? I once spoke to the Archives about an ancestor who was orphaned in 1778, and as I recall, they said no orphans court existed until a decade or so later, and they therefore had no records to search for that period. As a general comment, while I wouldn't expect to personally find any ancestors in this database, I would think that publishing an index of these records would be valuable. In my experience, orphan ancestors are the hardest to research, for obvious reasons. And as the size of your just-part-of-the-A's list indicates, there was no shortage of orphans in early America. 1. [NJ] New member's interest - picture of unknown WW2 Sailor
    2. Christine
    3. Hi List, Please take a moment and have a look at the picture of this WW2 Sailor - do you know who he is? http://gallerychristine.photoblog.co.uk He 'may' have served on the USS CHICAGO or the USS HELENA. He may have been a friend of Mack GALLIMORE from Denton, NC, who served on both these ships, up to when the ships were sunk. I would like to send the original picture to his surviving family. Any information/ideas/assistance would be most welcomed! Regards, Christine

    2. Howdy - last week I made mention of my working on another project involving the extraction of entries in the 13 Calendar of Wills subset of the NJ Archives volumes, involving 'wards and their guardians'. As a prelude to providing that material in full, am including here a portion of what is being accomplished, hoping it will spurn some interest by the membership in some of the ancestral data which may be of further help to researchers. This material is only preliminary, and I will not be able to do any lookups or transcriptions at this time. Further, the DATABASE is in no way completed, nor is even this first section - listing of ward's surnames beginning with A. To view the data properly, please follow the directions included as, because of the amount of data extracted, and limitations of space, it was necessary to make changes to form and layout to include as much useful data as possible. I welcome comments! David - [email protected] INSTRUCTIONS FOR 'WARDS & GUARDIANS' DATABASE This DATABASE was done using Microsoft WORD. To view the material properly, set your Margins to 0.5", make your Tabs 0.3"; Type form and size is 10pt Arial, and the Layout is Landscape. There are six (6) columns of data: 1. NAME - surname in CAPS, followed by any given names; when age is known it is in parentheses. 2. LOCATION - generally, the NJ county name only, but may be of another location, and when known, it has been inserted. 3. FILED - when petition was filed for appointment of Guardian. The date of Appointment has NOT been included, due to space limitations. 4. DEC'D PARENT (or OTHER) - normally, only the deceased father's name was given. Sometimes the mother's was as well, and if she did not remarry she is included before their surname. If she did remarry, and it was given, that married name follows that of the deceased father. In some cases the father is not deceased, in which cases the fact that he is 'living' has been inserted. 5. GUARDIAN - name of person or persons appointed to act as Guardian until ward comes of age; generally 21. When known, the relationship to the ward was included. 6. SOURCE - in which volume of the Calendar of Wills set the full entry is found. Guardianships found in NJ ARCHIVES Calendar of Wills 1670-1817 NAME (AGE) LOCATION FILED DEC'D PARENT (or OTHER) GUARDIAN (Res.; Related to Ward) SOURCE AARONSON, Benjamin (-14) Burlington 11 Feb 1794 3. >From "History of the Oranges in Essex County, NJ from 1666 to 1606" by Stephen Wickes, M.D. pg 23 Canoe Brook was located at the intersection of what is now Northfield Road and S. Livingston Ave in (I believe) West Orange. The name was later changed to Northfield. I checked Mapquest for Northfield and, although I have ridden through this intersection many times in my life I never knew it by that name. 3. Hello, Here is more information, to make the picture brighter: #1. Mahlon WRIGHT b. 1712 (m. Mary Thorn) #2. John Wright b. 1744 (m. Hannah Barber) #3. Jospeh Wright b. 1777 (m. Rebecca Bunting) I have a list of the children of Joseph Wright. This family moved to Salem, Columbiana Co OHIO in Fall of 1809, leaving Burlington Co NJ. They were QUAKERS. When they arrived in Salem, OH in Fall of 1809, they went to visit John SPENCER in Salem, OH. He was said to be related by marriage to Joseph Wright. John Spencer 'might' be married to a sister of Rebecca Bunting, or perhaps he is married to a sister, or cousin of Joseph Wright? It has come to my attention, that Samuel Wright of New Hanover Twsp, Burlington Co NJ had a daughter named Rachel Wright, who married John Schooley, and they had a daughter named Frances Schooley, who married John Leonard. FRances and John Leonard had a daughter named Rebecca Leonard, and she did marry a man named John Spencer, prior to 1801. Could this be the same John Spencer who moved to Salem, OH? 3. Sharon I was led to believe that she died in NJ and had applied for a death certificate from NJ I still have not had a response from the relevant government group - they were too eager to take the money .. I did receive other certificates from them except the MAIN one I was looking for. I then questioned a number of relatives - very distant relatives - a number of times and then discovered that in fact she died in NY and buried in NJ - I will apply for her death certificate from New York in the next week or so. I have also checked a number of sources to track down her obituary in both NY and NJ - from newspapers and other online sources with NO luck .. still checking the internet. It is amazing I have located her mother, step father, siblings, husband and other relatives but not her. She is NOT buried with her husband (same cemetery) as this was her wish - nor is she buried with her other relative.. I wonder if there was a chance that she may have changed her name when buried in a cemetery in NJ. Thanks - I will try official death certificate from MY - I think this is my last step to locating her. 1. [NJ] John Spencer and Joseph Wright m. Rebecca Bunting, Quakers of Burlington Co NJ.
    2. Lilly Martin
    3. Hello, Joseph Wright and his wife Rebecca Bunting were both Quakers from Burlington Co NJ. In the fall of 1809 they arrived in Salem, Columbiana Co Ohio. Salem, OH is famous for having been settled between 1803-1810 by Quaker families arriving from NJ, MD, PA, VA. There is a history book written about Salem, which states that John Spencer of Salem, OH was related by marriage to Joseph Wright of Salem , OH (m. Rebecca Bunting). I have confirmed there is a man living in Salem, OH named John Spencer in the 1809 and onward time period, but no one seems to know where he came from. I think it makes sense to believe he must have also come from Burlington Co NJ as well. Is there anyone looking at a Spencer family, probably Quakers, who had a John Spencer who left about 1809 to Salem, OH.?? Joseph Wright is a direct descendant of Mahlon Wright. Best regards, Lilly Martin
