    3. Hello cw, I am searching county Passaic, in special Paterson. Looking for my Vandenbree family, descendants of my uncle James who emigrated to the States in 1872. I have a lot of data, but keep looking for gaps I still have. Thanks for your reaction. Ruut van den Bree. 1. [NJ] finding photos story
    2. Reading the post about the scrapbook that Ida found reminds me of the time that I was at my local FHC. They were cleaning out their closet and took out a small bag of old photos that someone years ago had brought to the center and then left behind. I asked if I could take them home and try and find the families that they belonged to. They agreed. For a couple of years I tried to find the owners, names of the people in the pictures were clear--each one labeled so carefully. I posted the family names on several sites and finally one day I got a email from an individual looking for the pictures. I agreed to meet her at the center (she happened to live nearby). When she came to the center she showed me all the names that she had been working on in her family tree to prove that she was part of the family listed on the photos. When I handed her the photos it was like I was handing her diamonds or long lost treasures. She was just thrilled. As she and her son began to read all the names she exclaimed "this is my mother's handwriting!" and "I think this is my grandmother's handwriting". She began to tell me about how the old family home many years ago had a fire in it and that after cleaning up the mess the family held a garage sale for the items that they no longer wanted. She could not figure out however, how the photos had gotten to the center nor how they had gotten lost to begin with. We both chalked it up to a genealogy angel. She was just glad to have them now in her possession. joan

    2. They are listed on the 1910 census for Passaic New Jersey. James H wife Florence and James, father Anicke, mother. Do you have that information? I did not find them on the 1900 census however. But could be a problem in how the census taker listened to their last name. Pat cw ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [NJ] finding photos story II
    2. Howdy folks - I'd like to add my own story. Some years back a non-blood aunt passed away, in Oregon, and from her I inherited a number of items - books, Christmas balls, letters, scrapbooks, etc. One of the scrapbooks was probably that of her parents, whom I can only recall ever calling them anything but Mr & Mrs Van. My aunt had an unmarried sister, whose last name was Van Nostrand, but until I joined this list and got more involved in its genealogy, I never knew that NJ was probably the origin of their family. The Vans lived in West VA or VA (sorry, a memory lapse, but I do remember the house) and as a child, my brother and I used to ride the B&O out of Philly, down to Wash DC where they'd pick us up at the station. Anyway, back to the scrapbook. It's about 1 1/2 inches thick and contains many family photos, including one of my aunt when she was 10 days old. And it contains many civil engineering photos from the very early 1900's of Mr. Van being a student at Cooper Union, an engineering school in NY (still in existence), from which he probably graduated in 1908. There's lots of photos of his fellow students too. The greater number of pictures are of family and family dogs. Now, why am I writing this? Hmmmm, well, a great deal of effort went into placing identification for all their dogs, but as for people, hardly a name at all. So even if I wanted to trace this family, it would be near impossible to identify the nice old lady in the long dress, with the cameo up close to her neck, holding her shotgun, and next to an aged gentleman in his black suit and tie. Or even the men and women in the sail boat, out on some lake waving to all happy to the picture taker. Dogs yep, people nah. So, listen folks, if ya wanna pass on all those photos of the family members, PLEASE remember to write (in pencil) on the reverse side, or in the book or album WHO THE HECK THEY ARE. Ummm, I did find one good name among those who were Mr. Van's classmates - Jack Armstrong, and did find him in a Who's Who for Engineering for 1937. The Vans only had the 2 daughters, and neither had children. End of line, end of story! 3. I found a small scrap book at a yard sale called: "Our Trip to Syracuse July 22--August 5, 1944". In the typed pages the family "Yehle and Lang" are mentioned! The pages are very old and worn but the typed part are on other paper glued in the book and are very clear! There are 7 photos with first names in great shape! I would like a family member to have this and would send it for free! If you know of a family around that part of New York at that time or could locate tem they can have the scrap book. The first names are: Uncle Joe Ida Uncle Pete Oneida Lake Gen Ed Uncle Meinrad Town of Cicero Town of Brewerton Nancy Ann Martinson's chicken house Catherine Town of Mattydale Omer Betty Town of Eastwood Syracuse Kate Marge June Florence Louis Jeannette Frances Jim Claud Uncle Herman Yates Motel Uncle Ed Aunt May Albert Langs It is a little story about what they did for those days in Syracouse and would be a shame to not find the family so they could read it! 3. Greetings to you too, Ruut- The list has been quiet for several days. Summer vacations are probably the cause. There has been a LOT of bad weather in the eastern states for about 2 weeks and much of the area is under flood warnings or is actually flooded. It was a chilly 33° this morning here in Eastern Oregon and is a balmy 78° right now in the mid afternoon. Did a search for my name of interest, got results, got thru two pages of these, but got an 'ERROR' notice on the third page and couldn't get out of it. Followed their directions and even used my "back" and "recent" buttons -- didn't budge!! Maybe a later try will prove more profitable. I'm beginning to suspect my ancestor just really doesn't want to be found!! :)))))) Terri in Wa

I am working to separate the two and possibly three Ezekiel Sampsons (Samsons) that served in the Revolutionary War. 2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR 'WARDS & GUARDIANS' DATABASE This DATABASE was done using Microsoft WORD. To view the material properly, set your Margins to 0.5", make your Tabs 0.3"; Type form and size is 10pt Arial, and the Layout is Landscape. There are six (6) columns of data: 1. NAME - surname in CAPS, followed by any given names; when age is known it is in parentheses. 2. LOCATION - generally, the NJ county name only, but may be of another location, and when known, it has been inserted. 3. FILED - when petition was filed for appointment of Guardian. The date of Appointment has NOT been included, due to space limitations. 4. DEC'D PARENT (or OTHER) - normally, only the deceased father's name was given. Sometimes the mother's was as well, and if she did not remarry she is included before their surname. If she did remarry, and it was given, that married name follows that of the deceased father. In some cases the father is not deceased, in which cases the fact that he is 'living' has been inserted. 5. GUARDIAN - name of person or persons appointed to act as Guardian until ward comes of age; generally 21. When known, the relationship to the ward was included. 6. 1. [NJ] Wards & Guardians Names A-L 1786-1790
6. SOURCE - in which volume of the Calendar of Wills set the full entry is found. Guardianships found in NJ ARCHIVES Vol XXXVI, Calendar of Wills 1786-1790, Vol No. 7 - Surnames A to L NAME (AGE) LOCATION FILED DEC'D PARENT (or OTHER) GUARDIAN (Res.; Related to Ward) SOURCE ABORN, George Gloucester 31 Jan 1787 Jonathan ABORN Jonathan HARKER NJA 36:7 ALBERTSON, John Gloucester 19 Jan 1786 Josiah ALBERTSON Joseph BURROUGH NJA 36:8 ALBERTSON, Mary Gloucester 7 Mar 1787 Josiah ALBERTSON Joseph BURROUGH NJA 36:8-9 ALBERTSON, William Gloucester 7 Mar 1787 Josiah ALBERTSON Joseph BURROUGH NJA 36:8-9 ALLEN, Joseph Monmouth Jul 1790 Samuel & Martha ALLEN Martha ALLEN (widow) NJA 36:10 APPLEGATE, Willliam Middlesex 2 Nov 1786 William APPLEGATE Andrew ROWAN NJA 36:13 ATKINSON, Benjamin Jr Burlington 2 Nov 1789 Aaron ATKINSON Benjamin ATKINSON Sr NJA 36:14 BACON, Ann Salem 15 Dec 1789 Samuel & Mary BACON John DENN NJA 36:15 BADGLEY, John Essex 11 Mar 1786 John BADGLEY John HOLE NJA 36:16 BAKER, Abner Essex 2 May 1789 Henry BAKER Isaac HENDRICKS NJA 36:16 BAKER, Barbara Burlington 16 May 1787 John BAKER John VANDEGRIFT (of Bucks PA) NJA 36:16 BAKER, Daniel Essex 30 Mar 1787 Daniel BAKER Nathaniel LITTLE NJA 36:16 BARRET, Jesse Gloucester 30 Dec 1788 Elijah BARROT William BEASTON NJA 36:19 BEACH, Sarah Morris 24 Sep 1787 Epenetus BEACH William D'HART NJA 36:20 BENNET, Idah Monmouth 23 Jan 1789 William BENNET (living) William BENNIT (father) NJA 36:21-22 BILLS, Silvanus (11) Monmouth 18 Oct 1787 Thomas BILLS & Sarah (remar.)
