    1. Re: [NJ] surrogate court records help
    2. Thanks so much for answering my post. You were the only one so I hope that you do not mind if I ask one more question. I have ordered films from step number two so that I can go on to step number three. Will papers in step number three lead to unrecorded Estate Papers or is that just hit or miss? Is there something listed in the papers of step number three that I can use to order the proper numbers in the Estate papers? Thanks, Joan -------------- Original message -------------- From: Michelle Chubenko <[email protected]> > [email protected] wrote: > > Is there anyone out there that has worked with the NJ Surrogate court records > for Union County? 3. Delores and all - I, in no way, meant to imply that one should give up looking for ones ancestors. My thought is that IF there's a source out there that tells us which records are destroyed or unavailable, it saves us the struggle of looking for them. Especially us folks who live great distances and are relying on long distance research and/or the generousity of others, and suffer the shortage of extra cash for research. Like most all of us, I'm having total difficulty in finding birth or death info on a certain individual, back in the mid-to-late 1700's, and have an "idea" that perhaps these records have been destroyed. It would definitely help me to know what not to bother looking for. And let me add that the Indiana Library Delores speaks of is definitely a surprising source of NJ info. I have used them and posted this source a few times on other NJ lists. Stay well all -- Terri in faraway WA

    3. Dolores & all, This really isn't a book. In the Allen County Public Library (largest genie collection EAST of the Mississippi) e-zine, a review written by ACPL Librarian John D. Beatty was published (in early 2006?) highlighting this collection. The NJ State Archives has a detailed catalog page on this manuscript collection, which includes a description of what is on each microfilm roll: http://www.njarchives.org/links/guides/sle00003.html Also, the record series is available on microfilm through a local LDS Family History Center as well. Here are the details from FamilySearch's catalog: Damages in New Jersey by the British and Americans, 1776-1782 Notes: Microfilm of original records. Includes index. Contains an inventory of damages done and goods taken by the British and American Armies during the Revolutionary War, for the following counties: Bergen, Burlington, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset. Format: Manuscript (On Film) Language: English Publication: Trenton, New Jersey : Microfilm and Record Unit, 1964 Film Notes: Note - Location [Film] Surname index to damages - FHL US/CAN Film [ 888698 ] Damages - FHL US/CAN Film [ 888699 ] Damages - FHL US/CAN Film [ 888700 ] [email protected] wrote: > Did anyone respond to this? 2. Quoting Terri <[email protected]>: > Adding to Delaware Delores --- this book sounds like a good source of > what NOT to look for -- 'cause you're not gonna find it!! :)))))) Stephanie Miller wrote back to me, saying she would next check on its availability through WORLDCAT. That's a healthier attitude than "you're not gonna find it." (Good grief!) Meanwhile, a Google search immediately brought to light that a large Indiana library has the desired Index on microfilm. Cut and paste the below URL into your browser: Index http://www.friendsofallencounty.org/search_microtext.php They have a surprisingly New Jersey section, so readers may find something else they wish to order via Interlibrary Loan. I wrote to the Allen County, Indiana library via e-mail, asking if they'd mind looking up my one name (Langley) rather than bother doing an ILL, especially since I found in the details that the Index contains only northern counties. My Langley, a Loyalist, would be from Salem or another southern county. The original Index docs and films are at the NJ State Archives. 2. Terri
    3. When these stories pop up from time to time, it really tugs at my heart. I've seen many, many piles of photos at junk and antique stores and so wished I could buy them all and find their owners. I found an old year book once, from a school here in WA, that I was able to purchase. After running a notice of it on the appropriate WA county mail list, with no response, I turned it over to a research library here. Don't guess they're interested in taking on photos, but most Historical or Genealogical Societies will. At least then one knows they're not just "lost" forever!! Hope all are well and happy -- Terri in WA
