NIX/NICKS Researchers NIX-L@rootsweb.com 11 March 1998. Thanks for the welcome. I am researching the NIX/NICKS family that went from South Carolina to Georgia to Mississippi to Arkansas. The earliest identified and documented ancestors I have are William NICKS b Abt 1808 and Eda, (aka Edy) b Abt 1808 (both born in South Carolina) who show on the 1850 Pontotoc County, Mississippi Census. This census shows Sarah NICKS, my Great-grandmother as 14 years of age born in Georgia. I need any information available about the ancestors and relatives of William NIX/NICKS and his wife Edy, maiden name unknown. According to family tradition Edy was full blood Cherokee. William died before June 1857 when his estate was in probate in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Edy NIX arrived with her children in what is now Saline County, Arkansas about 1859 where she patented land in 1860. An affidavit signed by James Harvey HICKS in 1913 states that Edy died about 1860. Edy's daughter Sarah Ann Melissa NIX married James Harvey HICKS 24 July 1861 in Arkansas. Melissa and James were my Great-grandparents. There was also a connection between the SPANN and NIX family in Pontotoc County, Mississippi that continued into Saline County, Arkansas. I have land records for the NIX family in Laurens County, South Carolina from 1793 until 1833. The census records seem to indicate that the NIX migration route was determined by 2 things. First when the land they farmed wore out and second when new Cherokee lands were opened. I show them in Newberry area of South Carolina in 1790 census, in Laurens area of South Carolina in 1800 census, in Pendleton District (Cherokee Land) of South Carolina in 1810 and 1820 census, in Hall County Georgia (Cherokee Land) in 1830 census, Cherokee County (Cherokee Land) Georgia in 1840 census and Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1850 census. I would appreciate any information from anybody that can help me with this family. Sincerely, Paul D Tyson 314 Leesville Road Clinton, South Carolina 29325 (864) 833-2209 pauldtyson@backroads.net
