    3. Charlotte (NC) Observer January 15, 1998 SHELBY, NC -- Rosalynd Nix Gilliatt, 93, of 202 Gilliatt St., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998 at her home. She was a lifelong activist for causes in her community and state and was the former owner, with her husband Cecil, of Gilliatt Florist and Gift Shop in Shelby. She is survived by two sons, Dr. C. Lee Gilliatt and Ben R. Gilliatt, both of Shelby; two grandchildren, Nathan Gilliatt of Durham and Sandy Cook of Richmond; two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil L. Gilliatt, a daughter, Hattie Nix Gilliatt, and a sister, Lucille Nix. Her life was defined by her faith in Christ, her devotion to her family and her willingness to give her energy and intelligence to efforts like juvenile rehabilitation, higher education and community beautification. As the chairperson and later an advisory member of the Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee, Gilliatt proposed and implemented the white Christmas lights that adorn uptown Shelby today. She was active in decision-making at the state level as a member of the N.C. Board of Juvenile Correction from 1955 to 1973. In that capacity, as well as her appointments to several governors' commissions on juvenile delinquency and youth crime, she advocated measures that would rehabilitate offenders and prepare them for life beyond the correctional institution. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she presided over the Women's Missionary Union, taught Sunday School and served the Grounds, Decorating, Finance and Use of Building Committees. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Shelby Business and Professional Women's Woman of the Year Award in 1951, the First Lady of the Year from the Shelby Beta Sigma Phi chapter and a certificate from former Governor Dan K. Moore commending her for her commitment to North Carolina. Two buildings at state juvenile correctional facilities have been named for her, and the N.C. AAUW chapter started an endowed fellowship in her name. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home in Shelby. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Sunset Cemetery, followed by a 12:15 p.m. memorial service at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Memorials may be made to Young Life of Cleveland County, P.O. Box 1757, Shelby, NC 28151. Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    3. Hi fellow researchers: I am searching for information on Elizabeth Nix who was the wife of Andrew Smiley. They are listed in the 1850 census in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. Elizabeth was 50 years old in that census, so she must have been born around 1800. She stated in the census that she was born in Georgia. Andrew Smiley was born in 1790 and stated that he was born in Mississippi. If anyone has information, or is researching this line, I would love to hear from them. Theresa Ballard Faulk
