    3. In a message dated 98-03-11 16:00:35 EST, you write: << I have land records for the NIX family in Laurens County, South Carolina from 1793 until 1833. The census records seem to indicate that the NIX migration route was determined by 2 things. First when the land they farmed wore out and second when new Cherokee lands were opened. >> My Nix family seems to fit into the migration pattern you described but I can't find any connection to yours. I have: Cisro Valentine Nix and his wife Cynthia R. Smith, both born in SC 1822&1825. Their children were Irena & Francis born in SC and Perry, William, John, Martha, James Layfette (my line), and Louisa, all born in Ga. This family came to Georgia in mid 1840s and were in Cherokee County on census for 1850,60,70,80. Cisro Valentine was in Civil War, captured at Vicksburg. Their son, James Layfette (b 1858 Ga) married Nancy Adoline Seabolt. Their children were John, Cynthia, Virgil (my line) and Mary (Maggie) born in Ga. and Walter and Plumer born in Ala. According to my grandfather they went from Georgia to Alabama before moving on to Collin Co., Texas in mid 1890s. Most of these Nixes stayed in Texas except my grandfather Virgil Nix who moved his family to Oklahoma in 1909. Chris Rodriguez OKDouble7@aol.com

    1. [NIX-L] The Murder of William R. Nix by John Black/WHITE CO., GA. 1856
    2. Karen Ledford
    3. Hello Researchers: Some Months ago I posted a query to the NIX list concerning the murder of my husband's GGG GRandfather WILLIAM RILEY NIX. He was murdered Nov. 19, 1856. I had a reply from a lady that gave me the name of a Missy Carroll who she said knew the story of the murder, she lived in Fort Smith Arkansas. I recently wrote to her and she responded with the following story: William Nix and John Black got into an argument. (Missy's husband's aunt told her the story 25 years ago and she didn't know what the reason for the argument was, or if there was a bad relationship between them prior to that day). Nix left. John Black followed him home and the argument cont. in the front yard. Black followed Nix into the house and stabbed him in front of his wife and Children. Their daughter, Sarah Lucinda Nix, was just a child at the time, was present during the stabbing, and saw her father die moments later as her mother held him in her arms. John Black was tried, convicted, and sentenced to hand. His last words before being hung were, "I just wish I had killed the whole damn family." William R. Nix was born abt. 1824 and he married Malinda Hood Barnett who was a widow with two children. She was the daughter of Robert Hood and she lived till Oct. 20, 1903 and is buried at Testanee Bapt. Church in White Co. as prob. is Wm. in unmarked grave. William R. Nix had a brother Moses Jasper Nix who married Agglessa "Agga" Black. Oct. 16, 1851. I believe that Agllessa was the sister of John Black who killed William. They are listed inthe household of Sampson Black in the 1850 Census of Habersham Co. Ga. He has a son J.L. 24 yrs. old who would be about the same age as William and he has a "A." 17 yr. old female that is the right age of Aglessa who was born in 1834, this would match perfectly with her age of 17 yrs in 1850. William R. Nix and Malinda Hood Barnett had the following children: 1. Sarah Lucinda born 1847 (from which Missy Carroll's husband is descended. 2. Jonas L. born 1850 married Lucinda 3. Jonathaon B. born 1852 4. HULDA NIX born 1854 married James "Jay Turner: My husband's GG GRandparents 5. John born 1856 married Mary Addie Harper. I hope this information is helpful to someone. 3. NIX/NICKS Researchers NIX-L@rootsweb.com 11 March 1998. Thanks for the welcome. I am researching the NIX/NICKS family that went from South Carolina to Georgia to Mississippi to Arkansas. The earliest identified and documented ancestors I have are William NICKS b Abt 1808 and Eda, (aka Edy) b Abt 1808 (both born in South Carolina) who show on the 1850 Pontotoc County, Mississippi Census. This census shows Sarah NICKS, my Great-grandmother as 14 years of age born in Georgia. I need any information available about the ancestors and relatives of William NIX/NICKS and his wife Edy, maiden name unknown. According to family tradition Edy was full blood Cherokee. William died before June 1857 when his estate was in probate in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Edy NIX arrived with her children in what is now Saline County, Arkansas about 1859 where she patented land in 1860. An affidavit signed by James Harvey HICKS in 1913 states that Edy died about 1860. Edy's daughter Sarah Ann Melissa NIX married James Harvey HICKS 24 July 1861 in Arkansas. Melissa and James were my Great-grandparents. There was also a connection between the SPANN and NIX family in Pontotoc County, Mississippi that continued into Saline County, Arkansas. I have land records for the NIX family in Laurens County, South Carolina from 1793 until 1833. The census records seem to indicate that the NIX migration route was determined by 2 things. First when the land they farmed wore out and second when new Cherokee lands were opened. I show them in Newberry area of South Carolina in 1790 census, in Laurens area of South Carolina in 1800 census, in Pendleton District (Cherokee Land) of South Carolina in 1810 and 1820 census, in Hall County Georgia (Cherokee Land) in 1830 census, Cherokee County (Cherokee Land) Georgia in 1840 census and Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1850 census. I would appreciate any information from anybody that can help me with this family. Sincerely, Paul D Tyson 314 Leesville Road Clinton, South Carolina 29325 (864) 833-2209 pauldtyson@backroads.net
