    2. Try the Brown , Oconto county and the Menominee/Winnebagos (Ho Chunk) direction. Bottineau family are Metis ( mix bloods of New England) I am related somewhat to that family. Will try to find some look-ups for you. Many, many, familes came to the upper midwest from Quebec and the New England area. Most were mix bloods, the sons/daughters of the Voyageurs/Fur Traders of an earlier era. They married indian women. This is very difficult ancestry to trace and sometimes involves four or five tribes! We have been working on it for many years. Many indians from the Reservations in the Wisconsin/Minnesota area (maybe Michigan not sure) that are over 50 years old or so were sent to "Boarding Schools". Mainly to steal thier culture and try to make them "white". So the Rolls would be easy start with the Dawes. Also, during the many indian "relocation" acts some stayed with the Tribes and others faded into the white mainstream, often after being given money. As an example my gg Grandmother (according to my grandmother) took money to become white. Eventually these proud people were "chased" into Oklahoma from thier homes in Quebec, Michigan and Ohio from that particular tribe (Huron-Wendat-Petuns-Wyandotte) depending on what agency they were dealing for relocations. Remember during that period too, the only ones that could read and write many times were the Catholic Priests. They used phonetic spellings for the French Names! Will try to dig up some information sites.

    3. My apologies to everyone for not getting back sooner. I have all the suggestions and am slowly working my way through them. At this point the court has now decided it doesn't need the information it requested and I'm off the hook. However, as time permits, I would like to follow up with finding out more about my step-son's heritage. From what I've been reading, it is quite interesting. It will most likely be after the first of the year before I will have much time to pursue all these suggestions. Again, thank you every one, Cheers, Jeanne Gold http://www.Digging4Roots.com/
