Below is the letter I received from Hudson Bay company about the English River site where I found my ancestor. I am wondering if anyone in our group might have info on KABINAKAGAMI LAKE or a site to find out more info on NWC? Thanks Jan Gouin Dear Jan Gouin: Thank you for your email of September 11, 2004. Please accept my apologies for the delay in this response. Our backlog of research correspondence has prevented us from contacting you sooner, and we appreciate your ongoing patience. I have consulted a "search file" that we have on the post at English River, and found that a Hudson's Bay Company post was first established there, on Kabinakagami Lake, by Thomas Vincent, Governor of the HBC's Southern Department, in 1815. It seems that there was also a post in this area belonging to the North West Company, HBC's main rival prior to 1821, the year the two companies merged. In fact, it may be that your ancestor was associated with the NWC's post, because I did find an entry in accounts of the NWC for a Jean-Baptiste Gouin (ref. F.4/32, 402). Unfortunately, the earliest records we hold for English River (ref. B.375) date from 1899, so I am unable to provide you with further information about the early days of this post. I hope this information is helpful to you, and wish you all the best with your continued research. Yours truly, Leah Sander
