Larry, I have an article written in the Elk Rapids paper, The Town Meeting Pub.No 096350, on June 18, 1997 by Glen Ruggles. Glen is an author of several books on the general Grand Traverse region, especially on the Chain of Lakes in Antrim County. Kewadin was a local Ottawa chief of the Chippewa Tribe and reputed to be a powerful man/medicine man, I think that would now be the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians in Peshabestown, Suttons Bay, MI.. Yes, he is buried in the Kewadin area of Michigan - North end of Elk Lake on the Res. here. The article's focus is mostly about an explanation of Indian names of the region but contains a picture (b&w) of Chief Kewadin taken about 1880 when he was about 35 years old. The Town Meeting's contact information is: The Twon Meeting, PO Box 335, 212 River Street, Elk Rapids, MI 49629 - 231/264-9711. Also their website is http://www.upnorthpub.com/ Glen Ruggles contact info - 2531 Watonga Dr., Union Lake, MI 48382 (248) 363-6618 - I believe this is him. Hope this helps you somewhat. Hello Ann, Chief kewadin died 1884, he was very old, his approximate age in 1880 could not possibly have been 35. You may have a mix-up there. Kewadin was my grt grt grandfather, I have very little info on him, but I do know he was very old when he died. Some memories of things told to me as a child remain with me, and his extreme age was one of those memories. My father was born 1906, and his mother was Kewadin's grand daughter,of whom I have a photo of. My father is on the Durrant roll as Bird Maning. I currently am researching Kewadin, will pass any new info on. Thanks, Emery A. Hello Emery, Thank you for the info. I can scan the picture and article from the Elk Rapids Town Meeting for you. Maybe they did not even have the correct photo, as they obviously were wrong about his age. Let me know. Thanks, Ann Seaman kcsinc@chartermi.net Emery A.
