    3. I've read extensively about Louis Riel because of my connection to Gabriel Dumont and the Dumont clan and have NEVER heard of him executing anyone but Thomas Scott, following a trial. I find it hard to believe that such a religious man would have done something so vile. I too would be most interested in some data regarding this woman who was executed by Riel. 1. [NISHNAWBE] Sarah Scott clarified

    3. There seems to have been a misunderstanding over my earlier posting. I am trying to verify a family story, for a friend. Thomas Scott, an Orangeman, bc1843 in Ireland was living in Belleville Ontario in May 1969.In late summer of 1869, he went west, hoping to make the goldfields. He stopped at Red River for work, to make some money, and found employment building the Dawson Road. Between Dec 7 and Feb 27, 1870, he was in and out of jail. He was ordered executed by Louis Riel who had him shot March 4, 1970. My friend believes that Sarah Little Deer Scott was his metis wife(?). Apparently she is buried near Parry Sound, Ontario. Given the small window of opportunity( Fall of 1869-Feb. 5th 1870) it's not likely that there could have been a relationship that resulted in the birth of a child. I'm working on proving or disproving the theory. There is a Sarah Scott died 1900 near Parry Sound. I will order in her death registration for clues. However, registrations in that era lack much identifying information. Helen

    1. [NISHNAWBE] OT - Navajo Message to the Moon
    2. Gary Boivin
    3. The elder, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question. His son translated for the NASA people: "What are these guys in the big suits doing?" One of the astronauts said that they were practicing for a trip to the moon. When his son relayed this comment the Navajo elder got all excited and asked if it would be possible to give to the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon. Recognizing a promotional opportunity when he saw one, a NASA official accompanying the astronauts said, "Why certainly!" and told an underling to get a tape recorder. The Navajo elder's comments into the microphone were brief. The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father had said. The son listened to the recording and laughed uproariously. But he refused to translate. So the NASA people took the tape to a nearby Navajo village and played it for other members of the tribe. They too laughed long and loudly but also refused to translate the elder's message to the moon. Finally, an official government translator was summoned. After he finally stopped laughing the translator relayed the message: "Watch out for these assholes. They have come to steal your land."

I thought it was appropriate for this List... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ People on this list will appreciate a joke I heard a few days ago when I attended a Native American Pow-Wow. As the MC was talking about his heritage he said: "I'm told by some of the elders in the family that I'm part white, but I can't prove it yet." The crowd roared with laughter. Seems like they have heard us say the opposite a few times, lol. Regards, Sharyn
