While looking for something else I came across this site, although it is not for Wisconsin or Michigan I did notice several surnames being researched by different people on list. Hope some one finds it useful. You need to go to http://www.turtletrack.org/ and then on the left side choose Current Issue or the Archives. In the archives is a lot of excellent reading. An interesting online newsletter celebrating Native America is Canku Ota. It can be found at www.turtletrack.org that has first person histories among featured articles. It covers many different tribes. I found a genealogy 10 part history of Fr. Phillip Gordon, first Chippewa Catholic priest in America, in the first person history section. He told of his family history with his grandfather Jean Baptiste Gaudin/Gordon in LaPointe. Also had his mothers history Dingley back a couple of generations also. Had various other articles covering Cadottes, Johnsons & sidelight to the 1854 Treaty of LaPointe. Found my great, great grandfather mentioned in that article as a little indian boy that was an artist, which I had no idea of, even showed a picture he drew that belonged to Ms Harriet Wheeler. It has an archives section that you can browse thru too. Another of my favorites. Hope you all enjoy it too & stumble onto information that will help your searches as well. Peggy.
Joyce: There are many Loonsfoot surnames listed on the Kewaunaw Tribal Rolls, L'Anse, Michigan. Which one were you looking for? I have a hard copy of the rolls. I came across this site, www.ojibwe.info & it is really informative. Covers MN., WI., & Canada. Even has a book that has alot of genealogy for northern Wisc., chippewa & others. I tried e-mailing the administrator for further information but keeps bouncing back to me. Even cites sources. It took me a couple of hours getting thru all of it & the various genealogies. On 1 of my lines, carried back to abt. 1530, how they did it I don't know, but I was amazed to say the least. Also has Chippewa Half-Breeds of Lake Superior Script 1872. For the notes on the genealogy parts also tells which Fur Trade book the information was found in as well as reference number for film or book & where it is, such as Minnesota Historical Society etc. It was definately worth the time to browse around & explore it all. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. Peggy Shaffer.
If you read this message, please let me know if you still are looking for Angelique Brebant, daughter of Waussegundum from the land claim message (Oct 1999). I tried e-mailing you but was undeliverable. This is my line too. Peggy Shaffer.
I am intrigued by this latest information especially as it pertains to two individuals that I've been searching for. Both are somehow connected (I'm not sure how) to my mother's ancestry. I would like to know more about them and their families. I have an old manuscript that represents an oral history of my Chippewa/Ojibway ancestors from Sault Ste. Marie from about 1830 to the early 1900s in and around Lac du Flambeau. In the manuscript there is mention of Chief Mon-go-ziid, commonly known as Loonsfoot of "Fon du Lac." There is also mention of Wa-ban-o-kwe who was present for my Gr.Gr.Grandmother's "Naming Feast." She is described as attending the naming feast along with O-ji-cha-wed, Osca-bay-wis, and Be-waa-see-ne-kwe. This would have been sometime between September 1838 and the Fall of 1840 at the village which was then located at the foot of the rapids on the Saint Mary's River. The family has long speculated that all were associated with the Crane "Clan" totem and were related. But, so far I haven't found any "hard" evidence to link the families other than they were friends and travelled throughout the UP and northern Wisconsin before settling in Lac du Flambeau. Can anyone shed any more light on this. Osca-bay-wis was a 1st Chief and O-ji-cha-wed is believed to have been a 2nd Chief or Headman fopr the band. Mon-go-zid's family and descendants at one time were in LCO territory before settling in or near Baraga, UP, Michigan. Thomas W.
