    1. Israel Francis Bernier
    2. Greetings! I am new to this list but have been reading it and the archives for several weeks. I've found information that makes me believe one of many of you may have the information I'm seeking, so offer thanks to the many contributors! My paternal great grandfather was Israel Francis Bernier. According to his Civil War discharge papers he was born 1845 at Maskinonge, Quebec, CA. On his citizenship application he says he emigrated to the US in July 1846 through Detroit. He enlisted in Company B, the 46th Infantry from Grand Rapids, WI in 1865, catching the last months of the war. Family information says he married Mary Susan LaVigne about 1873 and probably in Juneau County, perhaps Necedah, WI. He died there 11 Sept 1895. Mary Susan, born 11 June 1850, was the daughter of Charles LaVigne and Ursula Lessard LeRoy (Roy, Roi) LaVigne of Portage, WI. I am drawing blanks on the US census lists for Israel Francis Bernier. This family was Catholic--Charles and Ursula LaVigne are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery at Portage. The story is that Ursula was born at Prairie Du Chein, 1818 to Pierre Lessard and Julie Crelie, was a sister to Pierre Pauquette's wife and a granddaughter to Joseph Creley (Creli). Charles LaVigne claimed Michigan as a birth place and gave the year as 1810. His parents are supposed to be Jean Baptist LaVigne and Elizabeth Hyotte of Prairie du Chein. I would appreciate any help you can give confirming any of this. I am especially interested in any traditional names and tribal affiliations you might have for any of the above as that information is lacking from the information that's been passed to me by distant cousins. I discussed this with my father before he died and it was all new information to him although he said his German cousins from his mother's side always called him and his sister "The Indian" and "The Squaw" and they weren't being nice about it. He questioned his parents but was only told he was half French and to be quiet about "that Indian nonsense". I would like to claim with pride something that appears to have been lost to him, if in fact it was there. Unfortunately I'm 2000 miles distant from being able to research any records in Wisconsin and am unable to travel so I'm depending on your generosity to help me put the family story together for younger generations. Thanks so much! Linda.

    1. Re: [NISHNAWBE] EMAIL problems
    2. Jolene Killoran
    3. Hello Jan, I don't know...... I have had on very few occassions emails that I didn't get until much much later. They had gone into a protection feature that saves some emails for me, my security for email is set really high. I get a report of them every once in a while - I don't know why some of emails from trusted sources end up there, while others go through from the same trusted sources. Go figure. Most come through just fine, only few end up there. They aren't emails I had blocked, or ones that contain a virus because I check that faithfully. Also, when I had first gotten my computer 3 years ago and my husband and I set up our email accounts - some of my emails sent to my address where going into his email account. Computers are funny sometimes...... everyonce in a blue moon he still does get one of my emails (sent to my email address) that goes to his (seperate email address). It doesn't happen that often to me but, it isn't totally unheard of as far as my own experience. It could also be a misunderstanding that you are getting them all, only others aren't using the message board as much at times. Hope I have been a little helpful. Sincerely, Jo ----- Original Message ----- From: <Nimrodkiss@aol.com> To: <NISHNAWBE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 03, 2005 12:55 AM Subject: Re: [NISHNAWBE] EMAIL problems > > HI Jolene > My name is Jan Gouin and I, AM up with Nishinawbe but get very few > emails. 3. Mark, I found this letter a few years ago in a HBCA film: "October 4, 1862, Sault Ste Marie Garden River, Mr. Bell Sir: I inform you of the death of my mother also the mother of my brothers. I hope you will have the kindness to wright to ?Sosia/Losia and Charles to let them no she died on the third of this mounth at ten o'clock p.m. Also inform them I wish they will send me as soon as possible some money. I wish Joseph would send eight or ten dollars and my son Antoine must send me ?three dollars. This is to help me to pay the expences of my late mother. Mr. Bell would you have any objections to send me the amount I ask for and charge it to them. My brother would not object to it or have the goodness to let them no, so they will send some money soon as possible. After sickness of two weeks she died, inform my brother of this. I am your servent. Signed Micheal Boyer. Please not forget me." Source: HBCA/Film B.109/c/1 I hope this adds to your knowledge of the family. My ancestor is Marie Anne Lampron Charite b. 1733 Maskinonge and I would be interested in knowing Angelique's lineage. 1. Nishnawbe e-mails
    2. Dear group, There is some misunderstanding about the e-mails you are receiving. When someone subscribes to the list, that person receives a copy of all the e-mails sent to the list. If the e-mail pertains, save it or answer it. If it does not pertain to you, delete it. There is no way to have anyone receive only those e-mails that pertain to your ancestry. Secondly, when you subscribe to the list, the e-mails will go to the e-mail address used to subscribe. If you want the e-mails to go to a different address, then send the subscribe message from that e-mail account. Thanks, Vicki list owner

    2. Jolene My name is Annie....and I also have been getting mail from the same place and yet they say I am not subscribed there...so how can I get this too stop...I get a dozen or more each day...and since I have a large web site, I really dont have time and space for it...Any ideas here??? Annie Jolene Killoran <sisgldhr@up.net> wrote:Dear Cathy, Good evening.....I am so sorry that you have been getting unwanted email, I wasn't aware. I would be very unnerved myself -if it were happening to me. I am not sure if you had subscribed to nishnawbe message page unknowing or if there was an error of sometype totally unrelated to you. Yet, I believe you can unsubscribe in much the same way of subscribing.....If you had gone that route all ready and it didn't help. I am not sure but, it might be a problem with protocal a similar or sametype block of computer identification numbers that is giving you the unwanted email. Every account on the internet is sectioned off in blocks and individual identification numbers and well - sometimes they get overlapped. If that is the case, you might need to contact you internet service provider and let them know this is happening to you. I only mention it because a similar situation had happened to my family member only they were blocked out from their own email because someone out there in the internet world was using a similar identification (overlapping) and that person had abused the mail service with sending unwanted spam. It is a pure frustration to go through, yet it can happen. Please know that I am not trying to hassle you by using nishnawbe message board. Nor anyone else whatever the case may be. I sure do hope I have been of some help. Is it just my emails annoying you or everyone that uses the message board? It just might not be the fault of anyone on the administration end of the nishnawbe message board. Although, I truly don't know that for sure with regards to your situation.....I am new to using nishnwabe message board yet, I joined it long ago and enjoy recieving emails from it - in the hopes that I can help others and share information. I had trouble at first posting my emails only because I had a fancy background on my emails and message boards use simple script and plain old backgrounds to not overload the system. With computers it is constant learning experience. Good luck to you Cathy. I hope the unwanted emails stop coming to you. 3. Tom, Thank you. Very kind and encouraging. By the way I had spotted that sometimes others give good web page sites for research...The Wisconsin Local History & Biography Articles online is one I happen to like, yet it takes sometime to read articles. Slow going.....The basic search search function isn't all that great with using names yet, locations sometimes bring up some good information. If you know of an area in mind to search.....I had found a LeDuc article using it an Anointe LeDuc - Buffalo, WI some old settlers convention had his photo in the article. Anyways, http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wlhba again you got to have sometime to sift through and look and read sometimes just prodoment names are listed and if you fully read articles sometimes it is useful and stumble onto something good. 3. Hello, I gather from not getting a responce my Duck family question -it was a stupid one. Sorry, just gets frustrating sometimes looking. Just hoping someone might know of my family. Thought I give some more details. "Joseph" Peter LeDuke born abt. 1849 Detroit, Michigan. Assuming his parents died young.... Peter had sisters by the name of Rose, Alice, and Kitty. Might be more siblings??? I was thinking that Rose Laduke age 14 was placed with Antoine Morafa family 1870 Census Detroit, MI. Alice Laduke 1870 Census age 11 St. Vincent's Orphans Detroit, MI. Kitty was said to be married to a Voss - Peter lived with her and ran away at about 12 years old. Peter Laduke married 1. unknown (could be Rose?) unsure Child: Nettie - nickname (could be Edna?) unsure * found Nettie Laduke 1900 Detroit Michigan Census at Mother Mary of Saint Scholastica House of Good Sheperd working in laundry. 2. Selena Sheff (her second marriage also) First marriage said to be Anthony Charboneau. *birth record Mary Adelaide Charboneau birth May 14, 1886 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Name of Father: Anthony Charboneau Name of Mother: Selena Sheff. 2nd Marriage Record of Mary Charboneau stated Father's name as: Arthur Charbeneau. Children from Peter and who they married 1. Joseph Laduke born 1887 Saginaw, MI died 1954 - Mae Dougherty 2. Joseph Leduke born 1895 Whitefish Pointe, MI - Evelyn? 3. Theodore Laduke born 1892 Manistique, MI 4. Geneveive Germaine Laduke born 1894 died 1957 - LaFernier / Edward Listermen 5. Priscilla Laduke born 1898 - L.J. Berger 6. Madelin Rose Laduke born 1899 - George LaTondress 7. Agnes Pearl Laduke born 1901- Raleigh Daugherty/Dougherty 8. Aloysius John LaDuke born 1903 - Elizabeth Fredrickson 9. Lewis Laduke- born and died 1904 10. Francis Hubert Laduke - born 1909 died 1915 drowned *funeral card Selina LaDuke born August 11, 1862 died November 13, 1948 buried Mt. Olivet Cemetery Detroit, MI. Her sister was Adelaide Sheff married to Francis Goudreau. Selena came from Kent, Ontario Canada related to Thibodeau's also. *Peter worked for the Diamond Match Co. in Ontonagon, MI and fished. For his first paycheck he bought a gun to hunt to feed his family and a newspaper subscription although he couldn't read. Short bio by Alma Swinton. Mrs. Swinton was a doctor's wife and often accompanied Madelin Laduke to her appts. She was sight and hearing impaired and had learned Braile. In 1920 Joseph Laduke and Mae nee Dougherty are living next to an Odelia and Priscilla Leduke. In 1920 George Latondress and Madge are living next to a Claud and Agnes Laduke. I don't have much more just tidbits here and there. I had ordered a death record for Peter Laduke but, I am not sure if I have the right one. That is where the Austin Laduke and Catherine Pelka came in from the last email. Please let me know if anything sounds familiar or if it can be corrected. Thank you. Jo

    3. this is what I have so far...he is my tenth great grandfather...I have more detailed stories but thought it would be too much to post here... Born around 1710 died in Autumn of 1760 Sons: Kinonchamec and Wenniway and possibly Musinigon Mineweweh, Minavavana, Le Grand Saulteur, Ninkaton, Grand Sautor, Grand Sauteur, Grand Chief Mivanon, Menehwehna, Finding no trading goods at St. Anthony Falls, as had been promised him by the governor of Mackinac, Carver determined to return to La Prairies les Chien and secure some from the traders there. En route he met a Chippewa band headed by the Grand Sautor who treated the Englishman with disdain, but offered him no violence. Having at last secured a stock of goods, our traveller returned to Chippewa River engaged an Indian pilot, and mounted the eastern branch to the falls. He there noted the great war road of the Sioux and Chippewa, and observed a tract of timber levelled by a hurricane. At the head of Chippewa River was a town of that tribe, with a hundred stout fine young warriors. Their customs, however, were very filthy. Mash-i-pi-nash-i-wish / Bad Bird / Machiquawish / Matchekewis / Muchicowiss / Michiguiss / Mitchikiweese / Mudjekewiss / Wachicouess / Mitchwass / Mitchewas / Kaigwiaidosa [born c.1735 in Northern Michigan; died 1805 or 1806 near Toledo, Ohio], principal Ojibwa chief of the Thunder Bay, Michigan community, descendant of an influential Ojibwa family from Lake Superior, father of Madjeckewiss; captured Fort Michilimakinac with Chief Minweweh, Minavavana "Although you have conquered the French, you have not yet conquered us!" In this address to an English trader named Alexander Henry, Minavavana, a Chippewa or Ojibwa chief, warns the English that France's defeats during the French and Indian War do not mean that England can assert sovereignty over Indian lands. 1761 Englishman!--You know that the French King is our father. He promised to be such; and we, in return, promised to be his children. This promise we have kept. Englishman!--It is you that have made war with this our father. You are his enemy; and how then could you have the boldness to venture among us, his children? You know that his enemies are ours.... Englishman!--Although you have conquered the French, you have not yet conquered us! We are not your slaves. These lakes, these woods and mountains were left to us by our ancestors. They are our inheritance, and we will part with them to none.... Englishman!--Our father, the king of France, employed our young men to make war upon your nation. In this warfare, many of them have been killed; and it is our custom to retaliate, until such time as the spirits of the slain are satisfied. Now the spirits of the slain are to be satisfied in either of two ways. The first is by the spilling of the blood of the nation by which they fell; the other, by covering the bodies of the dead, and thus allaying the resentment of their relations. This is done by making presents. Englishman!--Your king has never sent us any presents, nor entered into any treaty with us. Wherefore he and we are still at war; and, until he does these things, we must consider that we have no other father, nor friend, among the white men, then the king of France. But, for you, we have taken into consideration, that you have ventured your life among us, in the expectation that we should not molest you. You do not come armed, with an intention to make war. You come in peace, to trade with us, and supply us with necessities, of which we are much in want. We shall regard you, therefore, as a brother; and you may sleep tranquilly, without fear of the Chippewa. As a token of our friendship, we present you with this pipe to smoke. Source: B.B. Skull Cave Below Fort Holmes on Garrison Road, Skull Cave is believed to have been the hiding place for English Fur Trader Alexander Henry. His close friend, Ojibwe chief Minavavana sent him to hide in the cave on a bed of human bones in order to save him from death during Pontiac’s Rebellion in 1763. 70 Soldiers Massacred Henry had business interests at Mackinac, and he found it necessary to go there in the spring of 1763. He passed unscathed through the massacre there in June of the English by the Indians. This was in the mainland fort on the south shore of the straits, on the site of which a Michigan State Park is now located. Under the leadership of the Saulteur Chief Minavavana, who acted in concert with Pontiac to wipe out if possible the English in New France, the Chippewas surprised and killed seventy soldiers, among them Lieutenant Jemette, and took the rest prisoners. The casual dream of another Chippewa Chief, by name of Wawatam, was the means of saving Henry's life on this occasion. Wawatam had dreamed long before of adopting an Englishman as his brother. When he first beheld Henry, he knew the latter for the person whom the Great Spirit had been pleased to point out to him as his white kinsman. They had exchanged presents, and Henry had expressed pleasure and declared his willingness to have so good a man as Wawatam for his brother. It was a lucky dream for Henry. An Indian slave-woman secreted him in a garret on that terrible day, and his brother Wawatam spirited him away from the vicinity as soon as possible. When Henry fell into the hands of the vengeful Minevavana, Wawatam delivered him by an impassioned and eloquent speech in council Hope this helps... By 1760 he had established himself as War Chief of the Ojibwas in the northern Michigan territory. Tom Cuthbert
