Thanks Jim, I'm not to familiar with lineage formats so bear with me, here is what I do know; Amos can be found in the Denver Township school district records from 1894-1906 I believe. He attended with his sister Martha who died in May 1902 of pneumonia. Her parents are listed on the death cert. as Nancy Morry and Mr. Silas. I do know that Amos married as Amos Elk to Mary Ob a wa kum in 1908. His parents are listed as unknown and she lists J. Ob a wa kum as father and mother unknown. (original marriage license) Their children are Thomas, Eliza and Morris (d. in infancy). His son Thomas filled out his death cert. listing John Silas as his father but Amos never gave info as to who his parents were so not sure that is correct. Another strange fact from Nancy's death cert. is that William Wabinaw is the informant and lists her father as Jacob Bro(a)ke(i)ns (it's hard to read) and her mother as Mary last name unknown. What his relation to her is I don't know. But I do know that the Mary that Amos married also used Wabinaw. Nancy died from labored pneumonia due to exposure! to the cold, and is buried in the Indian cem. in Isabella Township. Anything you can find would be helpful. Thanks again and miigwetch, Kimi Jo -------------- Original message -------------- > Here is what I have on the family (not much- additions, correction > appreciated, thanks, Jim. > > 1st Family: > 1. I am having a hard time finding info for Amos Silas, and need some assistance. This is not the Amos from Pinconning, Bay County, MI. They were both born about the same time but this Amos was in Isabella County. My main problem is connecting him to his birth parents. Amos was killed in a hit and run accident in 1937, (I have the police report and death cert.). I believe his mother was Nancy Elk who died in 1910. She was married to James (Black) Elk in 1892 or (8) I don't have the paper work in front of me and Amos is listed as his step son on the 1900 census. Any help would be appreciated. Miigwetch, Kimi Jo

Thanks for the additional info. I noted that you have Louis born in Michigan in 1842 I have recorded his baptism in Berthierville, Quebec in 1844. I never saw where Louis used OBESHAW but I have seen his son Alexandre recorded as AUBUCHON but used OBESHAW later in life. Grace Marie LEVEILLE used her middle name Phebee ( FAY-BAY). She was named Grace after her Godmother. Her father Noel was the last generation in his line to use the real family name of FORCAN-FORQUIN (FORQUIN = FOR-KIN rhymes with the "Eh" that Canadians use) Another researcher supplied me with the following Louis Gonzague Joseph AUBUCHON s/o Joseph AUBUCHON-dit-DESALLIERS & Emilie Marie BOUCHER Baptized Jan 27 1844 Berthierville (Haut), Berthier, Quebec m. A very nice site is: http://www.negenealogy.com/mi/mi_maps/mi_cm.htm you can go down below the map and chosse the year and see the county locations. Going backwards in time you can maybe watch your county of choice disappear. Other states can be viewed as well. I truly don't know, the Duck family could just be the Duck family .....I just asked whether anyone might know if they could be Laduc/Laduke whatever spelling because my family hasn't ever seemed to commit to one version or another early on concerning the family name. My Peter Laduc couldn't read or write - which at times brings an interesting combination to how his last name is spelled. So far my family they have been found and used Laduke, Leduke, Laduc, Laduque, Leduc, and Leaduques. I had read sometimes Laduke type names are also spelled Laduck....it is a stretch but, I guess I was kinda hoping Duck wasn't that far off from Laduck either. In any case, maybe the Duck family might be looking for their ancestors and maybe they can find them from my post. 1880 Munising, Schoolcraft County, MI Census Louis Duck age 30 laborer Joseph Duck age 5 Peter Duck age 60 trapper I don't believe that my Peter would have been in Munising, MI in 1880 just yet....I believe part of his family was living there at that time. As far as I know by my family lore, Peter had family in Munising. He was part native american, from where or what side I truly don't know......so I could be looking for a maternal named family from Munising for him at that time- only I don't know his mother's name at all. I was told he joined some of his family in Munising between 1890 and 1900. In 1900 he lived in Ontonagon, MI, well at least that was the main location - he still traveled around. If I could locate his birth or death record for sure - I would be very happy. My family has tried before, looking for him in records in Detroit, MI. He could have been born anywhere really.......and he died at a hospital in Michigan between 1930-1940. It is just so difficult because he moved about so much. I can do some looking around in Cheboygan, MI and also keep my eyes peeled also. Thank you, again. Jolene: Alger County wasn't established on March 17, 1885, before that it was made up of land originally assigned to Schoolcraft County. That is why you see Munising listed in Schoolcraft County. Hope this helps you out! Paul Petosky Postmarks from the Past http://www.grandmaraismichigan.com/History/postmarks.htm Jolene Killoran <sisgldhr@up.net> wrote: Anita: Thank you for your reply. I found the Duck family in 1880 Census for Munising (but, it was in Schoolcraft County, MI) - I don't know why it wasn't taken in Alger County, MI but, I am guessing that maybe that is just the way it was done in 1880. Jolene: I had some old 1850/1860 census information copied from an old microfilm from many years ago. I did not see the name Duck on it nor Leduc. However, I have researched families in the Alger Co. Michigan area that had the name Laduc in their lineage. My husband had an Elizabeth Leduc, a Mrs. Lamouria, and a possibly cousin had an Emma Leduc. A Mrs. Atherton, who recently passed, had a grandmother Leduc. These Leducs migrated here from Cheboygan, Michigan and before that, Russell Co. Clarence Creek, Ontario. Another Rosie Laduke, maiden name Carrow, from Cheboygan who had children Dorris, Rena, Elmer, and Clyde. I will keep my eye out for Duck while searching records. This probably don't help much but wanted to let you know I looked. The 1870 Michigan Census is free on line. Give it a try http://envoy.libomich.lib.mi.us/1870 and the Cheboygan Genealogical Society is on line. Hi All I have just completed my volunteer work with the annual Times Colonist (our local newspaper) book sale. I have several copies of Peter Newman's books Company of Adventurers (ISBN 0-670-80379-0) and Caesars of the Wilderness (ISBN 0-670-80967-5) - six (6) hardcover copies of Caesars of the Wilderness and nine (9) hardcover copies of Company of Adventurers. I also have a quantity of soft cover copies of each - C of A (ISBN 0-14-006720-5) AND C of the W (ISBN 0-14-008630-7). The only cost involved is postage as I did not have to pay for the books - but remember postage in and out of Canada is expensive. Depending on where you live the postage can be from $2.00 to over $10.00 so think about the cost before you ask for a copy since I am going to ask for payment before mailing. I also picked up a copy of the local history book for Bragg Creek, Priddis, Kew and Millarville (Alberta) but it cost me $10.00 (I already have a copy in my library but thought someone might be interest! ed). There is a slight tear in the top of the spine where someone pulled at the top of it, but otherwise it is in good condition. It is a first edition in 1975, ISBN 0-919212-81-6 (cost is $10.00 plus postage). Tomorrow is our clean-up day but I don't think there are any more books that might be of interest. There are thousands of book that will be sent to recycle for the paper - seems like a shame to destroy so many books but the cost of storage and distribution is prohibitive. If you are interested please contact me off the list at nanitort@shaw.ca Take care Stan
Thanks to several of you for the help you're trying to give me on locating information Israel Francis Bernier and others in my lines. Today I located a Francois Bernier b. 1806 at Maskinonge, Quebec, CA. He wound up in the area of St. Paul, Oregon and was busy building a family there at the time my Israel Francis Bernier was born in Maskinonge (1845), but it appears his father Francois Bernier was born abt. 1780 in Maskinonge. The younger Francois have a connection to Hudson's Bay Fur Company here. Of all the men with the Bernier surname who emigrated to the US this is the first I've found from that same community other than Israel Francis Bernier. So, I'm tossing this out to see if anyone knows anything of this family. Thanks to Anita for the idea of getting his Civil War and pension records. I'll get busy on that. You all are keeping me in the hunt! Thanks! Linda
Did you mean Grand Rapids, Michigan? If you send to the National Archives for your Civil War ancestor's file and ask for the Personnel File and Pension File, it will give you much more information than the Military File. I will take a look at my Prairie du Chien information. Remember that Crawford Co. and Brown Co. Wisconsin were Michigan at one time. You may want to try writing the State Historical Society of Wisconsin for your information. They were very helpful to me in this type of research. Greetings! I am new to this digest but have been reading it and the archives for several weeks. I've found information that makes me believe one of many of you may have the information I'm seeking, so offer thanks to the many contributors! My paternal great grandfather was Israel Francis Bernier. According to his Civil War discharge papers he was born 1845 at Maskinonge, Quebec, CA. On his citizenship application he says he emigrated to the US in July 1846 through Detroit. He enlisted in Company B, the 46th Infantry from Grand Rapids, WI in 1865, catching the last months of the war. Family information says he married Mary Susan LaVigne about 1873 and probably in Juneau County, perhaps Necedah, WI. He died there 11 Sept 1895. Mary Susan, born 11 June 1850, was the daughter of Charles LaVigne and Ursula Lessard LeRoy (Roy, Roi) LaVigne of Portage, WI. I am drawing blanks on the US census lists for Israel Francis Bernier. This family was Catholic--Charles and Ursula LaVigne are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery at Portage. The story is that Ursula was born at Prairie Du Chein, 1818 to Pierre Lessard and Julie Crelie, was a sister to Pierre Pauquette's wife and a granddaughter to Joseph Creley (Creli). Charles LaVigne claimed Michigan as a birth place and gave the year as 1810. His parents are supposed to be Jean Baptist LaVigne and Elizabeth Hyotte of Prairie du Chein. I would appreciate any help you can give confirming any of this. I am especially interested in any traditional names and tribal affiliations you might have for any of the above as that information is lacking from the information that's been passed to me by distant cousins. I discussed this with my father before he died and it was all new information to him although he said his German cousins from his mother's side always called him and his sister "The Indian" and "The Squaw" and they weren't being nice about it. He questioned his parents but was only told he was half French and to be quiet about "that Indian nonsense". I would like to claim with pride something that appears to have been lost to him, if in fact it was there. Unfortunately I'm 2000 miles distant from being able to research any records in Wisconsin and am unable to travel so I'm depending on your generosity to help me put the family story together for younger generations. Thanks so much! Linda.
