    1. Connection of Grand Traverse Band members with Red Lake Reservation members
    2. A. Dembinski
    3. The recent shootings at Red Lake prompted me to look into the history of that reservation and the peoples on it, and I came across a fairly detailed genealogy that has been posted on the internet which links members of that tribe with some of the members of the Grand Traverse Band. See http://www.ojibwe.info/Ojibwe/HTML/people/p000024l.htm#I30363 This page has links to the remainder of this extensive genealogy, there is a vast amount of information. On the cited page, Joseph WAYKAYZO, and his granddaughters Viola M. WAHKAYZOO and Sylvia M. WAHKAYZOO correspond exactly with Joseph, Viola and Sylvia Waukazoo in my database, all connected with the GTB. See my summary page posted at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~waukazoo/ . The Red Lake police officer, Daryl Lussier, who was killed March 21st, is a cousin to the descendants of Viola and Sylvia according to the posted genealogy. I had searched for databases relating to Waukazoo, but the variant spelling used in this new database is one I had not thought of before. I don't know how to feel about this discovery. We are truly all related. Any additions, corrections or comments on this Red Lake information is appreciated.

    3. Hello, I'm researching my POST line in the Flat River (Orleans & Belding) area. I found the following listed in the Ionia County, MI 1850 census. Wabasis, Chinquana 18 Mich Wabasis, Connonona 34 Mich Wabasis, John 40 Mich Wabasis, Macadefsequa 17 Mich Wabasis, Now Con 12 Mich Wabasis, Post 4/12 Mich Wabasis, Shanabaqua 7 Mich Wabasis, Wabindags 10 Mich I'm ASSUMING (could be a mistake on my part) that my POST line has a link because of the given name "Post" to the 4 month old in this group. I know my Post's were here very early and "family lore" says there is Indian blood, but no one can remember where it comes from. Could be wishful thinking, who knows. Does anyone have information regarding this family? I would greatly appreciated hearing from you. Many thanks, Kim

    3. Hi All Came across the following and thought it maight be of interest to a few. There is a lot more excellent reading on this page and several more names like Couvillion, Miller. http://www.nps.gov/sacn/hrs/hrs1j.htm Whiskey was an important commodity at all trading posts but the whiskey shops of men like Samuels and Covillion in particular were the scenes of many degrading and deadly spectacles. Bad liquor sold with no restraint led to trouble at Alexander Livingston's grog shop on the St. Croix at the mouth of Wolf Creek. Livingston, who may have operated in cooperation with the veteran fur trader and whiskey dealer Joseph R. Brown, was gunned down in 1849 after a "drunken melee in his own store." Livingston died of his wound, while his killer, a Metis named Robido, escaped prosecution. Another whiskey dealer to die as a result of his own greed was Miles Tornell, a Norwegian operating near Balsam Lake. Tornell refused to back down in the face of competition from a German-American whiskey dealer, a man identified only as Miller, who operated a post on the lake. The German resolved the competition by hiring a Chippewa to murder Tornell. When the crime was detected, the Indian was executed, while Miller was merely flogged. In 1847, one of Samuels' subordinates, Henry Rust, was killed in a brawl with a drunken Chippewa, Notin. Unlike most such cases this one came to trial. The verdict reflected the outrage many early settlers felt toward the whiskey traders. Notin was found not guilty and a criminal complaint was issued against Jake Drake, the Samuels employee who sold Rust his stock of booze. Drake himself fell victim to foul play shortly thereafter, an inebriated Metis slew him near his Wood Lake post. 3. Not only that! There is still the matter of church records, they had a newpaper then and sometimes things like that were covered and while not required to keep records, some were maintained all the same. I would contact the local historical society about sources other than state records. The Minnesota State Historical Society has the old newpapers, and would maintain at least copies of any old birth, death and marriage records with the exception of what the church holds. 3. Peter, I looked so far can not locate birth.....for your Cadotte. I will keep my eyes open for you in the future. However, I am not sure if you are aware I did find in 1860 Census for Rockland, Ontonagon, MI at the Minesota Mine. In the household of Thomas Adams listed is an Angelique Cadotte aged 78 Seamstress and Charlotta Cadotte 38 yrs. old. If you are interested in the all the people listed in household it goes as follows: Thomas Adams 40 ore drifter Ireland Ann Adams 30 Ireland Thomas 7 Canada William Brawden 27 Mining laborer Ireland Angelique Cadotte 78 Seamstress Mich Charlotta Cadotte 38 Seamstress Mich Peter Nagle 7 Mich Perhaps the wrong Cadotte family you are seeking, perhaps someone else is looking for them and hopefully this will help them out. 3. Peter Since Paul was in the 1900 Washburn census and not the 1910 and also that wife Harriet died in that county in 1915, it seems almost certain to be. There was also another family at that time with the name Revoir at Danbury, Burnett, Wisconsin but they are not related. Definitely go for it! 3. Not sure if I am being helpful? Most likely I am not, wrong time frame and most likely the wrong family as to your specific question. I looked back just to verify but, I didn't see any births under the Legault name in county info for earlier times in Ontonagon, MI. However, from a listing a marriage in Houghton County 1905 Oliver Legault of trimountain and Emma Normand of Lake Linden. I know of a family by that name from there, so it caught my eye. Good luck to you.
