I have now found out that my ancestor, Glaud McCutcheon Jr., was married before Mary Elder. He wed a Catherine Monteith in Kings Co., New Brunswick on 20 Nov 1845. His daughter, Catherine Ann McCutcheon, is Catherine's rather than his second wife's. I would, however, still like to know how Mary Elder and Rachel Elder are connected. Glaud and Mary married in Queen's Co., NB on 24 Aug. 1849. I still have no info about them in Ireland. This family is my first foray into European records.
