My name, and that of my father, is James Cunningham Maher. My grandmother was Gertrude Agnes Maher, née Cunningham. Her father was James Cunningham. We are all originally from Portland, Maine. My great-grandfather, James, was from Manor Hamilton, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. By profession he was a mason and builder. He constructed many if the brick buildings in the port area of Portland, as well as the Lafayette Hotel on Congress Street.
