    1. Re: [NIR-TYRONE] looking for corrigans in Tyrone
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JoO45 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/101.1255.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, Here's another Corrigan from Tyrone. My grandfather was from Fintona. This is near to Omagh and Five Mile Town. His family were flax farmers. He, his mother and siblings came over to Philadelphia (I think James was already there) when the eldest son was killed by the British when he was going to town with the flax crop. Pop-pop was about 8 at the time and his father already dead. Here's the family: Charles Corrigan = Bridget Campbell The children were: Thomas 1860- 1882, Elizabeth 1861-1929, James 1865-1894, Rose 1865-1885, Mary, Sarah 1872ish and Joseph 1873. All but Thomas came to Philadelphia. He died in the assault. There may have been older children though as Bridget was the second wife. Hope this helps someone. 1. [NIR-TYRONE] Dogherty
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lymankd53 Surnames: Dogherty, Smyth Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7417/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Still searching for more info on my GGG Grandmother's family, Rosanna Dogherty born around 1800. She married a Robert Smyth at Camus Juxta Mourne on Dec 28, 1823. Her brother, Thomas Dogherty was witness to their marriage. Rosanna and Robert had least one daughter, Elizabeth, born Dec 18, 1826. Robert passed away sometime before 1840 and Rosanna left Ireland for NB, Canada and took her daughter with her. Her daughter, Elizabeth, was my GG grandmother and always said proudly that she was from Strabane. That is about all we have on Rosanna's history. Apparently, Rosanna was disowned by her Dogherty family after her husband died, because she had fallen in love with the caretaker of their estate and this is why she moved to Canada, to be with him. I appreciate anyone with possible information for her family to contact me. Thanks! Diane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was born 1800, so that means she was 21 when Eliza was born. (1821) So there is a possibility that the census year of marriage is wrong, perhaps it is 1820? It says Margaret was 22 in 1851 when her death record says she was born abt 1831. Also Margarets marriage announcement in newspaper in 1856 says Samuel is at Magherakeel by then Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. What dates are we talking about for their marriage, and what was their denomination? (Birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864. Prior to that you are reliant on baptism information. RC marriages were registered from 1864, non RC from April 1845. Prior to that it's church records again. Not all church records have survived, and even when they do many are not on-line. There's no sign of John & Sarah's marriage in the civil indexes. That would point to their having married before April 1845, in which case you need to search church records, where they survive. In general, the surviving Presbyterian Church records are neither indexed, nor on-line. Statutory birth registration didn't start till 1864, so you won't find birth certificates for the children. Baptism information is the only possible record of their births prior to 1864. If you think the family may have been Presbyterians from Newtownstewart itself, then the two most likely churches for them to have attended are Newtownstewart 1st & Newtownstewart 2nd. Unfortunately the 1st has no baptism earlier than 1890 and the second has baptisms for 1848 only, followed by 1861 onwards. (Both have marriages from 1845/6 onwards but these are in the statutory indexes anyway). Both churches' earlier records appear to be lost. So if that's where they attended, then you may not be able to find much from those sources. There are other Presbyterian churches in the general area, some of which have earlier records eg Ardstraw which is 7 miles from Newtownstewart has records from 1837. You might want to check other churches in that general area. You can see a full list of the Presbyterian churches in that area on the PRONI website. Newtownstewart is in Ardstraw parish. PRONI in Belfast has copies of the surviving records. They are not on-line and you either need to go in person or get someone to look them up for you. http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/research_and_records_held/catalogues_guides_indexes_and_leaflets/online_guides_and_indexes.htm Griffiths Valuation for 1859 has about 20 Fulton households listed in the Ardstraw area. (Only people with property with a rental value of 5 a year were listed in Griffiths so it's not a comprehensive list of all households). If you know Sarah's father's name (eg from her death cert) then you may be able to narrow the search using that information and Griffiths: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm linked to them through their daughter Leticia Rutledge Kyle. Thanks! Bobbie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was born 1800, so that means she was 21 when Eliza was born. (1821) So there is a possibility that the census year of marriage is wrong, perhaps it is 1820? It says Margaret was 22 in 1851 when her death record says she was born abt 1831. Mary Rankin was the daughter of JOHN RANKIN, and my assumption is that she is also from the Donagheady area. No Kyle of Rutledges in their names though. You haven't said what denomination they were. If they were Church of Ireland the local marriage records start in 1812; if they were Presbyterian then Killeter Pres church records start in 1839 & if RC their records start in 1863. Only 8 households, all in just 2 townlands Edenasop & Edenreagh (which are close to each other). 5 Rankin households in Edenasop on 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Killen/Edenasop/ Only 1 Rankin in Edenreagh in 1901 where he was working as a servant. (Name mistranscribed on the census): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Killen/Edenreagh/ 1 Rankin will for Edenasop held at PRONI. Here's the abstract (summary): Full Abstract : Probate of the Will of James Rankin late of Edenasop County Tyrone Farmer who died 18 September 1908 granted at Londonderry to John Rankin Farmer Effects £67 15s. The Rankins in Termonamongan look to have mainly been Church of Ireland. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know they are from "near" Kileter but have not been able to locate who their parents are either. I'd really like to be able to do that but there are so many Kyles and Rankins in that area! I also think the last name Rutledge means something to them because they gave it as a middle name to one of their daughters. The indexes are on the familysearch site, below. Newtownstewart is in Strabane registration district area. To have married in the early 1840s, Sarah would need to have been born in the 1820s. I can't see anyone in the 1901 Irish census of that age, born in Tyrone. So I'd guess she was dead by 1901 (or no longer in Ireland). Searching the death indexes for 1861 - 1901 for Sarah Jane White anywhere in Ireland gets 20 possible matches, none of whom died in the Strabane area, nor were most of them old enough either. So not sure what became of her. She may have left Ireland or remarried. https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://hr-search-api:8080/searchapi/search/collection/1408347 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don,t think Sarah and John emigrated to Australia or New York State as their last child to emigrate was andrew aged abt 17 and he did not travel with any family members but on arrival in the usa went to live with his two sisters Jane and Letitia. Henry Kyle was a landowner for some of my people in that area. The surname Rankin also crops up. I have also been able to verify an emigration for one of my lines from the Glendermott Valley (near the Donagheady/co. Tyrone border) -- the family is in the co. Londonderry census for 1831, emigrated to New Brunswick in 1833 (confirmed on the ship's register) and subsequently obtained a land grant at Westfield, New Brunswick. Looks as though James and Jane married c 1862 which is before RC marriages were recorded in the statutory records (1864). So the only record of their marriage would be in the church (if you know which one they married in). Familysearch has the following additional children to that couple: James 1868; Edward 1870; Luke 1871; Mary Jane 1873; Elizabeth 1875; Matilda 1877. In addition the 1901 census gives you Maggie & Susan. Births were in different parts of the county so the family seems to have moved a couple of times over the years. Probably worth getting all the birth certs to get the townlands to see exactly where the family were living at each time. (Birth registration only started in 1864, so any births before that won't be in the stat records. You would need baptism records). Cheapest way of getting the certs is from GRO Roscommon. Ask for photocopies which are cheaper than formal certs. http://www.groireland.ie/ You could use the Griffiths revaluation records in PRONI, Belfast to find out when James acquired the farm in Tirquin, and who succeeded him. VAL12B series. Killyclogher DED. (They are not on-line). You could also use them to locate him prior to that, from the townlands on the children's birth certs. Some of the births were in Drumragh RC parish. PRONI has copies of the following records: Drumragh (Omagh) (Derry diocese) Baptisms, marriages and deaths, 1846 and 1853-81; index to baptisms, 1846-79; printed history of the parish, mainly from the 17th century to c.1900. Author: elwynsoutter1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7413.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Statutory recording of protestant marriages started in Ireland on 1st April 1845. (Only people with property with a rental value of £5 a year were listed in Griffiths so it's not a comprehensive list of all households). If you know Sarah's father's name (eg from her death cert) then you may be able to narrow the search using that information and Griffiths: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
