I do not have the name of the son. My principal interest is in William Gavin where I have reached a blank in trying to discover his origins. During his military service William Gavin wrote a diary in which he described, in 1810 whilst fighting in Portugal, a chance encounter with a soldier from the 30th Regiment who stated he was the son of Doctor M'Mahon of Omaghrin in Tyrone and his (William's) cousin. Through any connection with the M'Mahon family I was hoping to be able to trace William's origins. The full diary reference is at http://www.waterloodiary.net/william_gavin's_diary_05.html Pigots directory of Omagh in 1824 lists a Bernard M'Mahon M.D. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DaveBoylan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7406.2.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Emma, If you recall from my first reply, I had found the IFHF marriage index for Joseph Proctor and Susan Williamson, recorded in the Dungannon Registration District in 1885. The IFHF search engine accepted John as Joseph's father, which means that Joseph and Robert James Proctor could not have been brothers, though they may have been cousins. So that you don't have to go back to the previous reply to view the marriage index for Joseph and Susan, I've copied it below: Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Proctor First Name: Joseph Spouse's Surname: Williamson Spouse's First Name: Susan Father's Surname: Proctor Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Year: 1885 Parish/District: Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) AND 1 match for the search criteria: Williamson (plus variants) Susan 1885 Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Williamson First Name: Susan Spouse's Surname: Proctor Spouse's First Name: Joseph Father's Surname: Williamson Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Year: 1885 Parish/District: Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) ____ I looked for the birth and baptism indexes for Robert James Proctor at the IFHF and found his baptism. I found his baptism index which shows he was baptized in the Coalisland Catholic Church in 1875. The IFHF search engine accepted John as his father, but I had to guess as to what his mother's first name was. After several attempts the search engine accepted Isabella as his mother: 1 match for the search criteria: Proctor (plus variants) Robert James 1875 Parish: COALISLAND (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Proctor First Name: Robert James Father's Surname: Proctor Father's First Name: Alexander Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Isabella Year: 1875 Parish/District: COALISLAND (RC) ____ To see if I could find out what Isabella's maiden name was, I next looked for the marriage index of an Alexander Proctor and Isabella at Ancestry.com, and found one entry. This is for the marriage of Alexander Proctor and Isabella McMinn recorded in the Dungannon, Tyrone Registration District in 1860. This is a civil marriage which means that Alexander and Isabella would have been Protestant: Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958 Name: Alexander Procter Date of Registration: 1860 Registration district: Dungannon Volume: 5 Page: 536 FHL Film Number: 101248 AND Name: Isabella McMinn Date of Registration: 1860 Registration district: Dungannon Volume: 5 Page: 536 FHL Film Number: 101248 Source Information: Ancestry.com. FamilySearch, Salt Lake City, Utah. General Register Office. "Quarterly Returns of Births in Ireland with Index to Births." Belfast, Ireland. ____ I then went back to the baptism index for Robert James Proctor to see if the search engine accepted McMinn as his mother's maiden name, but the search engine did not. But I did find the Coalisland birth and or baptism indexes for other children of Alexander and Isabella where Isabella's maiden name is McMinn. These children include Sarah Anne (1865); Alexander (1867); Charlotte (1870); and an un-named "Procton" child born in 1872. The birth indexes follow. There is not a birth index for Charlotte, as I only found her baptism index. The index for the un-named "Procton" child born in 1872, lists the mother's first name as Bella, rather than Isabella: Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 about Sarah Anne Proctor Name: Sarah Anne Proctor Gender: Female Birth Date: 27 May 1865 Birth Place: Coalisland, Tyrone, Ireland Father's Name: Alexander Proctor Mother's Name: Isabella Mcminn FHL Film Number: 101110 Source Information: Ancestry.com. Salt Lake City, Utah: Family Search. ____ Next are the baptism indexes for four children of Alexander Proctor and Isabella/Bella McGinn. Like the birth index, the 1872 baptism index for the un-named "Procton" child lists his mother's first name as "Bella." 1 match for the search criteria: Proctor (plus variants) Sarah Ann 1865 Parish: COALISLAND (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Proctor First Name: Sarah Ann Father's Surname: Proctor Father's First Name: Alexander Mother's Surname: McMinn Mother's First Name: Isabella Year: 1865 Parish/District: COALISLAND (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Proctor (plus variants) Alexander 1867 Parish: COALISLAND (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Procton First Name: Unknown Father's Surname: Procton Father's First Name: Alexander Mother's Surname: McMinn Mother's First Name: Bella Year: 1872 Parish/District: COALISLAND (RC) ____ You would have to order Robert James Proctor's 1875 baptism transcription to see if his mother's maiden name is listed, though I suspect his mother could have been Isabella McMinn. Just to recap, indications are that Joseph Proctor and Robert James Proctor did not share the same father, as the indexes above show that Joseph's father was John and that Robert James's father was Alexander. I looked for Alexander proctor's baptism index for the 1820s-1840s in Tyrone and other IFHF member counties, but didn't find it. Nor did I uncover a baptism index for Isabella McMinn. But I did find an Isabella Proctor in the 1901 census of Ireland living in an address of House No. 1, Mullaghmarget Tullyniskane, Tyrone. The census shows that she is a 60 year old widow born in Tyrone, and belonging to the Irish Church, that is, the Church of Ireland. In the household with her are two of her sons, 25 year old Robert, employed as a Tapper, and 23 year old William, employed as a porter. The sons are both unmarried. The census notes that Isabella, Robert, and William all speak "Broker English." The 1901 census transcription from the National Archives of Ireland website is below: Residents of a house 1 in Mullaghmarget (Tullyniskane, Tyrone) Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language Marital Status Specified Illnesses Proctor Isabella 60 Head of Family Irish Church Co Tyrone In House Read and write Broken English Widow Proctor Robt 25 Son Irish Church Ireland Tapper Read and write Broken English Not Married Proctor William 23 Son Irish Church Co Tyrone Porter Read and write Broken English Not Married ____ You can view a copy of the original 1901 census at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001200452/ The 1901 census also shows at least one McMinn household in close proximity to Isabella. This is the household of 72 year old widow Eliza McMinn born in County Tyrone, and her grandson, 18 year old William A. Armstrong, also born in County Tyrone. Their address is House No. 7, Mullaghmarget Tullyniskane, Tyrone: Residents of a house 7 in Mullaghmarget (Tullyniskane, Tyrone) Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language Marital Status Specified Illnesses McMinn Eliza 72 Female Head of Family Church of Ireland Co Tyrone Read only Widow Armstrong William A 18 Male Grand Son Church of Ireland Co Tyrone Agricultural Labourer Read only Not Married ____ I then found 74 year old widow Isabella Proctor in the 1911 census in an address of House No. 4, Mullaghadun (Bernagh, Tyrone. In the household with her is her son, 26 year old William Proctor, employed as a railway porter. The 1901 census gave William's age as 23, which is another example as to why ages in these census returns can not always be trusted to be accurate: 1911 Census of Ireland Residents of a house 4 in Mullaghadun (Bernagh, Tyrone) Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language Marital Status Specified Illnesses Years Married Children Born Children Living Proctor Isabella 74 Female Head of Family Church of Ireland Co Tyrone Read and write Widow Proctor William 26 Male Son Church of Ireland Co Tyrone Railway Porter Read and write Single ____ I'm still making progress on compiling information about the Longcake family of Cumberland, and will send that to you as soon as it is completed, hopefully by this weekend. The index is from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website link at: https://www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records Please see below: John Williamson, "Ireland, Marriages, 1619-1898" groom's name: John Williamson groom's birth date: groom's birthplace: groom's age: bride's name: Sarah Marshall bride's birth date: bride's birthplace: bride's age: marriage date: 26 Sep 1856 marriage place: Killyman, Tyr, Ireland groom's father's name: Thomas Williamson groom's mother's name: bride's father's name: Thomas Marshall bride's mother's name: groom's marital status: Single groom's previous wife's name: bride's marital status: Single bride's previous husband's name: indexing project (batch) number: M70214-5 system origin: Ireland-EASy reference number: 495 source film number: 101376 = Marriage records, 1845-1870, in the General Registry Office of Ireland Marriages v. 5 1856 Collection: John Williamson, "Ireland, Marriages, 1619-1898" https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGC2-TVP Citing this Record "Ireland, Marriages, 1619-1898," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGC2-TVP : accessed 14 Dec 2012), John Williamson and Sarah Marshall, 26 Sep 1856; citing reference 495, FHL microfilm 101376. ____ The marriage record can be found in LDS microfilm number 101376. You can order the film from your nearest Family History Center. Or, if you don't want to order the microfilm, you can order a copy of the marriage record from the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. For information about ordering civil birth, marriage, and death records, and the fees involved, go to the GRO website at: http://www.groireland.ie/ The marriage of John and Sarah would have been a Protestant marriage. The government in Ireland commenced with civil registration in 1845 when only Protestant marriages were recorded. Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations didn't begin in Ireland until the year 1864. With this in mind, I wanted to see if I could uncover a church marriage for John Williamson and Sarah Marshall. I didn't find a church marriage for them but did uncover, once again, their civil marriage index at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Tyrone, showing their marriage was recorded in the Dungannon Registration District (RD) in 1856. The names of the fathers of the groom and bride aren't automatically provided for you at this site, as they were in LDS index. But, the search engine accepted Thomas Williamson as the name of John's father: 1 match for the search criteria: Williamson (plus variants) John 1856 Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Williamson First Name: John Spouse's Surname: Marshall Spouse's First Name: Sarah Father's Surname: Williamson Father's First Name: Thomas Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Year: 1856 Parish/District: Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) ____ With Sarah Marshall as the primary partner in the IFHF marriage index, I wanted to see if the search engine accepted Thomas as the first name of her father, which it did: 1 match for the search criteria: Marshall (plus variants) Sarah 1856 Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Marshall First Name: Sarah Spouse's Surname: Williamson Spouse's First Name: John Father's Surname: Marshall Father's First Name: Thomas Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Year: 1856 Parish/District: Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) ____ The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/ Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you'll first have to register. Registration is free. You'll also be able to access the indexes that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain the marriage transcription for John Williamson and Sarah Marshall. You'll need to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the marriage transcription, as well as the other transcriptions you'll see later on. The IFHF website will have more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions. Next I looked for civil birth indexes and church baptism indexes for any children of John Williamson and Sarah Marshall. I uncovered civil birth indexes for five of their children at both the LDS and Ancestry.com websites. These children and their dates of birth are: Susan (1864); John (1866); John (1870); Female child (1874); and a Male child (1876). The two births for John indicate the first-born John had died young. The indexes for the female child and male child probably mean that when their individual births were registered, the parents hadn't chosen names for them. The indexes for Susan, both children named John, and the female child show the births as well as the baptisms took place in Coalisland, Tyrone. The index for the male child born in 1876 just lists Tyrone as the birthplace, but this index also gives the name of the birthplace for his father John. The name of John's birthplace is "Intgonis." I'll have more information about this place a little later. Each index is accompanied by an LDS microfilm number. These microfilms contain copies of the original birth records of the Williamson children. You can order the films from the Family History Center. If you don't want to order the LDS microfilms, you can order the Williamson birth records from the GRO in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. There won't be civil birth records for children born in Ireland before 1864. Index. Salt Lake City, Utah: Family Search. ____ I couldn't find a place called "Ingonis," in County Tyrone. I believe that this place name was either too difficult to read in a copy of the original 1876 birth record for the male child, or was not transcribed properly, as I did find a very small townland of 363 acres in Tyrone called Gortgonis, located in the civil parish of Tullyniskan. This information was found at the IreAtlas, which is part of the Leitrim Roscommon website. The IreAtlas can be found at: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/index.shtml The entry from the IreAtlas follows: Townland: Gortgonis AKA: (Also Known As): Acres: 363 County: Tyrone Barony: Dungannon Middle Civil Parish: Tullyniskan PLU: Dungannon Province: Ulster ____ Next I wanted to see if I could find any baptism indexes for children of John and Susan before 1864. I figured that having being married in 1856, they would have had children between the time they married and the year 1864, when civil registration of births commenced in Ireland. I was disappointed not to uncover any baptisms for Williamson children before 1864. But I did find the baptism indexes for the children named in the birth indexes above: Susan (1864); John (1866); John (1870); Female child (1874); and a Male child (1876). I also found the baptism for a Thomas in 1868, and a child not named, baptized in 1872. I was perplexed by these baptisms however, as the indexes from the IFHF for County Tyrone, show all the children were christened in the Coalisland Catholic Church, whereas their parents John and Susan, would have been married in a Protestant church. Emma, have you ever come across information showing that John Williamson and Susan Marshall had converted from a Protestant denomination, to Roman Catholic? Or was John a Catholic and Sarah Pprotestant? One of the advantages of Catholic baptism records, is that they give the names of the godparents or sponsors of the children. The godparents were often relatives or friends of the father and mother. You'll have to order transcriptions of the baptisms to find out who the godparents were. The baptism indexes for the seven Williamson children are below: 1 match for the search criteria: Williamson (plus variants) Susan 1864 Parish: COALISLAND (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. To learn more and see a photo of the church, go to the GenUKI website link at: http://www.genuki.eu/TYR/Church136.htm#History The information found at the GenUKI website for St. Mary and St. Joseph's Catholic Church shows the church is located on Brackaville Road, Brackaville, Coalisland. The church was built in 1857 and is still open. The church also has a graveyard. If you visit Coalisland this year, you may want to include the church on your itinerary to see where the Williamson children were baptized. If you do plan to visit the church, I recommend contacting the parish priest or the parish secretary a few weeks before you arrive, so that you can let them know you are visiting and to see if you set up an appointment with the parish priest. If you talk to the parish priest, explain that your Williamson and Marshall were married in a Protestant church, but that you have records showing their children were baptized in St. Mary and St. Joseph's. You can then ask the priest what would be the circumstances where a Protestant couple would have their children baptized in a Catholic Church, if they ha! dn't converted beforehand. Indications are that John and Sarah did not convert to Roman Catholicism, as I believe I found them and their son Thomas in the 1901 census, in an address of House 30, Derry, Tullyniskane, Tyrone. John's birthplace of Gortgonis, as shown earlier, was also located in the civil parish of Tullniskan. The census shows that 60 year old John Williamson as well as his 58 year old wife Sarah, and their 30 year old son Thomas, all belonged to the Church of Ireland. Thomas's occupation is listed as "Carter," while Thomas worked as a labourer. Ages of people in these census returns are not always accurate. For instance, indexes earlier had shown that Thomas Williamson was born in 1868, which would have made him 32-33 years old, rather than 30 years old in 1901. The 1901 census transcription below is from the National Archives of Ireland website link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ 1901 Census of Ireland Residents of a house 30 in Derry (Tullyniskane, Tyrone) Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language Marital Status Specified Illnesses Williamson John 60 Male Head of Family Church of Ireland Co Tyrone Carter Cannot read English Married Williamson Sarah 58 Female Wife Church of Ireland Co Tyrone Cannot read English Married Williamson Thomas 30 Male Son Church of Ireland Co Tyrone Labourer Read and write English Not Married ____ You can access a copy of the original 1901 census for the Williamson family at the National Archives link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001200095/ I didn't find John or Sarah Williamson in the 1911 census of Ireland, but found what I believe to be their son Thomas in that enumeration. The 1911 census shows that 40 year old Thomas is married to 30 year old Elizabeth. Thomas's occupation is farmer. He and his family are shown to belong to the Church of Ireland. The census also shows that Thomas can read and read but that Elizabeth cannot read. The census also shows that Thomas and Elizabeth have been married for 10 years as of 1911, and that in that time they had five children, with all five still alive and residing in the household with them in an address of House 43, Derry, Tullyniskane, Tyrone. The children in the household are 8 year old Thomas, 7 year old Mary, 5 year old Elizabeth, 3 year old Sarah, and 1 month old Isabella. William Marshall may have been related to Thomas Williamson through Thomas's mother, Sarah Marshall. To do this I went to Ancestry.com, where I located the following marriage indexes showing that a Mary Ann Holmes, Robert James Proctor, Elizabeth Wade, and Thomas Williamson, were married in the December quarter of 1901. Their marriage was recorded in the Dungannon Registration District. People in the index are listed alphabetically by their last names. Only one Elizabeth is in the index, and so Thomas must have married Elizabeth Wade: Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958 Name Registration Date Registration district Mary Ann Holmes Oct-Nov-Dec 1901 Dungannon Robert James Proctor Oct-Nov-Dec 1901 Dungannon Elizabeth Wade Oct-Nov-Dec 1901 Dungannon Thomas Williamson Oct-Nov-Dec 1901 Dungannon Source Information: Ancestry.com. Belfast, Ireland. ____ I then went back to the IFHF website for County Tyrone to see if the search engine accepted Elizabeth Wade as Thomas Williamson's wife, with the following results: 1 match for the search criteria: Williamson (plus variants) Thomas 1901 Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. I found the birth indexes for all five children, but also discovered that Sarah was born before Elizabeth. If you go back to the 1911 census you'll see that Elizabeth is listed as being 5 years old, while Sarah is 3 years old. The birth indexes on the other hand show that Sarah was born in 1905 and Elizabeth in 1907. The birth indexes that follow are from Ancestry.com. Each index is accompanied by an LDS microfilm number. But, unlike the Williamson birth indexes from Ancestry.com seen earlier, the LDS film numbers in the indexes that follow, according to the Family History Library Catalog, are in themselves indexes, and will not contain copies of the original birth certs. The baptisms are for Thomas (1902); Mary (1904); Sarah (1905); Elizabeth (1907); and Isabella (1911). I also found the baptism indexes for three children born after the 1911 census. These are for William John (1914); Norah (1916); and Maggie (1918). Belfast, Ireland. ____ Earlier I had mentioned that I didn't find Thomas Williamson's parents, John and Sarah in the 1911 census. It's possible I may have missed them in the census, or they may have died between 1901 and 1911. I looked for their death indexes at Ancestry.com. First, the results for John Williamson. I found three death indexes, one of which may pertain to Thomas's father. All three deaths were recorded in Dungannon. One index shows the death of a John Williamson in 1904. He was was 90 years old when he died. The second and third indexes shows the death of a John Williamson in 1905. In one index John was 75 when he died, while in the other index he was 53. The 1911 census had shown that John was 60 years old, which means that none of the three death indexes tally with his age of 60 in the 1911 census. But again, his age in the 1911 census may have been inaccurate, or it's possible his age at death in the Ancestry.com indexes, is inaccurate. The indexes follow: Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958 Name Death Age Date of Registration Registration district John Williamson 90 Jan-Feb-Mar 1904 Dungannon John Williamson 75 Jan-Feb-Mar 1905 Dungannon John Williamson 53 Jul-Aug-Sep 1905 Dungannon Source Information: Ancestry.com. The first index shows the death of a Sarah Williamson in 1903 at the age of 45, while the second index shows the death of a Sarah Williamson in 1906 at the age of 60. The 1901 census had shown that Sarah was 58. The ages of the Sarah Williamsons in the death index and the age of Sarah Williamson in the 1901 census, do not add up chronologically. The 1906 death index may pertain to Thomas's mother, but that's just speculation: Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958 Name Death Age Date of Registration Registration district Sarah Williamson 45 Apr-May-Jun 1903 Dungannon Sarah Williamson 60 Jan-Feb-Mar 1906 Dungannon Source Information: Ancestry.com. PROCTOR AND WILLIAMSON In going through your postings to the Ancestry.com message board for County Tyrone, I noticed a connection between the Proctor and Williamson families. You already have information concerning Joseph Proctor and Susan Williamson, but I also found information about them and their children, some of which you may or may not have. For example, below is the 1901 census for Joseph and Susan Proctor and their eight children, including your Sarah Jane, who is listed as 3 year old S Jane in the census. This enumerations shows the family were living in Gortgonis, Tullyniskane, Tyrone. It also shows that Joseph's occupation was "Cloth Beether." As you will see in a copy of the original census later, Joseph's occupation should actually be Cloth Beetler, rather than Cloth Beether. More on this later. The 1901 census also shows the Proctor family belonged to the Church of Ireland. All members of the Proctor family in the 1901 census were born in County Tyrone: 1901 Census of Ireland Residents of a house 13 in Gortgonis (Tullyniskane, Tyrone) Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language Marital Status Specified Illnesses Proctor Joseph 36 Male Head of Family Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone Cloth Beether Read only Married Proctor Susan 34 Female Wife Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone House Keeper Read only Married Proctor W John 14 Male Son Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone Factory Worker Read write Not Married Proctor Joseph 12 Male Son Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone Factory Worker Read write Not Married Proctor Samuel 11 Male Son Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone School Boy Read write Not Married Proctor Alexander 9 Male Son Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone School Boy Read write Not Married Proctor Thomas 7 Male Son Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone School Boy Read write Not Married Proctor Sharlott 5 Female Daughter Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone School Girl Read Proctor S Jane 3 Female Daughter Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone School Girl Cannot read Proctor Annie 1 Female Daughter Church of Ireland Ireland, Co Tyrone ____ A copy of the original 1901 census for the Proctor family can be found in the National Archives of Ireland link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001200375/ When you access the copy of the census, enlarge it, and you'll see that Joseph's occupation is Cloth Beetler. I found several definitions for "beetle," including having to do with the cloth industry at: http://thinkexist.com/dictionary/meaning/beetle/ The definitions follow: Beetle Meaning and Definition 1. (v. t.) To beat with a heavy mallet. 2. (v. t.) Any insect of the order Coleoptera, having four wings, the outer pair being stiff cases for covering the others when they are folded up. See Coleoptera. 3. (v. t.) To finish by subjecting to a hammering process in a beetle or beetling machine; as, to beetle cotton goods. 4. (v. t.) A heavy mallet, used to drive wedges, beat pavements, etc. 5. (v. t.) A machine in which fabrics are subjected to a hammering process while passing over rollers, as in cotton mills; -- called also beetling machine. 6. (v. i.) To extend over and beyond the base or support; to overhang; to jut. ____ Next are the individual marriage indexes from the IFHF showing that Joseph Proctor and Susan Williamson's marriage was recorded in the Dungannon Registration District in 1885. The index with Joseph as the primary partner shows his father was John Proctor, while the index for Susan shows that her father was John Williamson. Thus I think Susan would have been the daughter of John Williamson and Sarah Marshall: 1 match for the search criteria: Proctor (plus variants) Joseph 1885 Parish: DUNGANNON (RD) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. These children and their years of birth/baptism are: William John (1886); Joseph (1888); Samuel (1890); Alexander (1891); Thomas (1893); Charlotte (1895); Sarah (1897); Annie (1899) and Unknown Proctor (1899). It appears that Annie and the child un-named were born in 1899. This child may have been a twin, but that's just a guess. All of the children were baptized in the Coalisland Catholic Church. This enumeration was transcribed properly in that it gives Joseph's occupation as "Beetler." The census also shows that Joseph and Susan have been married for 27 years and in that time had 10 children, with 8 of those children still alive. Your Sarah Jane Proctor is listed as a 12 year old scholar. The oldest child in the household is 24 year old Samuel, while the youngest is 10 year old Annie. One of the placenames you had listed for your ancestors in Tyrone in your messages to Ancestry.com, was Congo. With this information I found what may be Thomas and his family in the 1901 and 1911 census enumerations. Both enumerations show the family residing in Congo, Donaghmore, County Tyrone. First the 1911 census, which shows that 18 year old stone mason ThomasWade is living in the household of his parents, 60 year old Thomas and 51 year old Mary Wade, in House 7, Congo. Thomas Wade the father is shown to be a farmer who cannot read, while his wife Mary can read and write. The census also shows that Thomas and Mary were married for 25 years as of 1911, and in that time had 8 children, with all 8 children still alive. Including the young Thomas, there are 4 children in the household with Thomas listed as the oldest. The other children are 15 year old Mary; 12 year old Joe; and 8 year old Robert. In this enumeration the father Thomas is listed as being 60 years old. He was also listed as being 60 years old in the 1911 census, which shows you can't always trust these enumerations for accuracy. Thomas's wife Mary is 45 years old. Their children include 13 year old Eliza; 12 year old Charles; 10 year old John; 8 year old Thomas; 6 year old Mary Ann; 5 year old Margaret; and 3 year old Joseph. FLANAGAN Emma, in one of your messages to the Ancestry.com message boards last year, you wrote that you were looking for the marriage of John Patrick Flanagan, who was born in Shorncliffe, Kent in 1890. I didn't have enough information to find a marriage record for him in England or Ireland, but I believe I uncovered information about his parents, Joseph Flanagan and Ellen Sullivan, as well as his siblings. For instance I found what I believe is the marriage index for Joseph Flanagan and Ellen Sullivan at the IFHF website for County Cork (North & East), showing the couple were married in the Cobh Catholic Church in 1888. When Joseph and Ellen were married, Cobh was called Queenstown, and was the point of embarkation for millions of Irish, especially after the Great Famine of the 1840s. Cobh (Queeenstown) is not only famous for its role as a major emigration seaport, but also as the home of a magnificent hill-top gothic cathedral known as St. Coleman's. Construction of St. Coleman's began around 1867, but it wasn't until 1915 that the cathedral was finally consecrated. I'm not sure if Joseph and Ellen would have been married in St. Coleman's. For more information and photos of the cathedral, go to the following links: http://www.cobhcathedral.ie/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Colman's_Cathedral,_Cobh In accessing the marriage index for Joseph and Ellen, I found that the names of their respective parents were also part of the index. But, the IFHF doesn't provide you with their names. You either have to know who they were, guess as to who they may have been, find out who they were through additional research, or order the marriage transcription to find out who the parents were. After a few guesses the IFHF search engine accepted John Flanagan as Joseph's father, and Ann as his mother. I didn't try to guess Ann's maiden name: 1 match for the search criteria: Flanagan (plus variants) Joseph 1888 Parish: COBH (RC) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Cork (North & East) Surname: Flanagan First Name: Joseph Spouse's Surname: Sullivan Spouse's First Name: Ellen Father's Surname: Flanagan Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Ann Year: 1888 Parish/District: Parish: COBH (RC) ____ With Ellen Sullivan as the primary partner in the marriage index, I got lucky. I guessed that her father was John Sullivan and her mother Catherine Sullivan, though I don't know for sure if Sullivan was also Catherine's maiden name: 1 match for the search criteria: Sullivan (plus variants) Ellen 1888 Parish: COBH (RC) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Cork (North & East) Surname: Sullivan First Name: Ellen Spouse's Surname: Flanagan Spouse's First Name: Joseph Father's Surname: Sullivan Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Sullivan Mother's First Name: Catherine Year: 1888 Parish/District: Parish: COBH (RC) ____ Next I found the IFHF baptism indexes for three children of Joseph Flanagan and Ellen/Helen Sullivan. The children were baptized in the Tullamore (Kings County) Offaly Catholic Church. The children are Michael (1895); Andrew (1897); and Mathew (1899). The IFHF search engine did not accept Ellen as the first name of Andrew's mother, but did accept the alternate spelling of Helen. If you want to access the index and the baptism transcription for Andrew, make sure to spell his mother's first name as Helen. Tullamore, as you probably know, was located in the Civil Parish of Kilbride in Kings County: 1 match for the search criteria: Flanagan (plus variants) Michael 1895 Parish: TULLAMORE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Offaly Surname: Flanagan First Name: Michael Father's Surname: Flanagan Father's First Name: Joseph Mother's Surname: Sullivan Mother's First Name: Ellen Year: 1895 Parish/District: TULLAMORE (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Flanagan (plus variants) Andrew 1897 Parish: TULLAMORE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Offaly Surname: Flanagan First Name: Andrew Father's Surname: Flanagan Father's First Name: Joseph Mother's Surname: Sullivan Mother's First Name: Helen Year: 1897 Parish/District: TULLAMORE (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Flanagan (plus variants) Mathew 1899 Parish: TULLAMORE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Cork (North & East) Surname: Flanagan First Name: Mathew

    1. [NIR-TYRONE] Passenger Lists from the Port of Derry/Londonderry
    2. Interesting ... but try to find the lists for 1850 for Port of Derry/Londonderry .... looking for the Macklins from Longford [Londford] and Donegheady [Dunnamangh] as well who in all likelihood went to Quebec/Halifax via the usual Liverpool transit point. My 2nd great grandfather's name in the US records was John Robert McAnall and he was born on Feb 9, 1840. During the 1860s (if not earlier as well), his family lived in Donagheady parish of County Tyrone, in or nearby the townland Moyagh. He was the oldest of 11 children and likely the only one to come over to the US ("parting on the Derry Quay" as a letter from one of his siblings put it). He first shows up on the 1870 census and the 1900 census says he immigrated to the US in 1867. The spelling of the surname varied a lot in Ireland from the records I have found thus far for his parents and siblings: M'Nall/McNall/McNaul/McAnal. Hope that's enough (but not too much) information for you. I really appreciate your help.
