I just returned from a family wedding in California. It appears that the piece of information I need most may be in a gap period between when the RC Church register ended in 1857 and the beginning of Civil Registration in 1864. My 2xg grandfather Michael McGarrity (or McGeraghty) married Sarah [middle name probably Ann] Hughes. First birth registration occurred 14 August 1864, for daughter Mary, born Inishative and registered in Six Mile Cross, Omagh. The later births specify Omagh No. 2, but that detail is not present for Mary's registration. I have retrieved 8 birth registrations from LDS microfilm, between 1864 and 1879 (Mary, John, Catherine, Sarah Anne, Patrick, Michael, Margaret and James). Since Civil Registration for Catholics began in 1864, there may have been earlier children that I have not found. If you could take a quick look for the marriage record of Michael and Sarah, I would be most appreciative. Thanks much. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thanks Liz, have done that now. You will have to go to the board where that item is posted. Hi Thank you for your very kind offer. I am researching the TODD family of the parish of Ardstraw and it's quite possible that some events in the lives may have occurred in Urney so I'd be grateful if you could note any Todd entries that turn up. I don't think there will be many. They were Presbyterian too. Hope you have a great time at the wedding! I have been combing through what land records I could find on PRONI and I couldn't find an estate with the Dogherty name, but I did see quite a bit of info on the Marquess of Abercorn. It's not easy when all you have is family lore, but I had hoped that the marriage record that showed my ancestor's marriage at Camus Juxta Mourne, would have made it somewhat easier to find information about the three people involved in the record. I know they were married in 1823 and that my ggg grandfather died and by 1942, my ggg grandmother was remarrying in NB, Canada. I found the following transcription on the County Tyrone website, that I felt might be a lead to figuring out my ggg grandfather's death, but I have been unable to figure out where to go to look for further information there might be about this person's passing: "Death announcements in the Town of Strabane and parish of Camus-juxta-Mourne extracted from personal notices inserted in the STRABANE JOURNAL, STRABANE MORNING POST, DERRY JOURNAL, LONDONDERRY STANDARD & LONDONDERRY SENTINEL 1785-1849 March 25 1828 We are sorry at having to announce the death of our much esteemed townsman, MR ROBERT SMYTH. He died on Sunday last, and has left a widow and eight children to deplore his loss. It is indeed too weak and common place a tribute to his memory to say that he was a most affectionate and attentive husband, kind and indulgent parent, and much esteemed and respected by all who knew him for his generous and hospitable disposition." Thank you again for your help and advice. Diane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I will probably write the 6 letters, and see what comes. I do know that Archibald (was his name Arthur)? married Grace in 1818 and she dies in Ireland in 1836. (She had eight children). Then he marries Martha Carruthers and one son Robert born 1838. She comes to Canada with him and dies in Mulmar twnship. I have James Noble (1818), Samuel Noble (1818), Edward James (1829), another Samuel (1831), Archibald (1832) Grace Izola (1835-1936) as children of Grace and Archibald. There are 2 other children that some show as their children Ann Jane and Mary but no DOB. Seems that Martha and Archibald had only one child Robert (1838) Since there are 2 Samuels, one of the Samuels may belong to a brother or cousin etc. Will keep you informed as I look at sources. Most estate were owned by the British and were often absent landlords with Estate Managers. Baron's Court was the Estate of the Marquis of Abercorn. The property is described as a magnificent demesne set in many acres of natural beauty & woods. Strabane was a Townland in the Parish of Donacavy, in the Poor Law Union of Omagh. It is also a Town in the parishes of Leckpatrick (0), Urney (20)and Camus (5), all in the Poor Law Union of Strabane, where many Tyrone Doherty's lived in 1869 - see bracketed numbers. The earliest Tithe Applotment took place between 1820-1830) The Marquess of Abercorn is the largest landlord with a Rev. Henry Tottenham having 216 acres which he rented out to tenants to earn a living for the Parish, often these lands were given to clergy or were under lease to the nobility. A similar story in my husband's family that a Lady ran off with the family member who was a carpenter on an estate. I was unable to find this in either estate records or elsewhere. Sort of the married to an Indian princess myth I think. Families such as these might appear with marriages in the Debrett's and other documents. Her children's names would help locate what Doherty is her father. You should be able to find a birth or marriage record with an Irish Herigage Foundation if the Parish records have survived. They must of missed it, I makes me wonder how many other omissions/errors there are? 1810 Wm. Gavin would of been 18-20? If he returned to Ireland and took up farming there are quite a few Wm.Gavin's in the Tithe Applotments. Perhaps too many to be looking for birth records through the Foundation. If you have a reasonable birth year you might be able to narrow down possibilities (if the church records survived)just by searching William Gavin's born (est 1790)as an ALL Ireland search. Although I don't think he would be too far afield from Tyrone if they were cousins. That is an interesting story for sure. Another program which I used to subscribed to had British Army records, there is a link via the Archives at Kew. Good luck.
