Author: AsHepburn Surnames: Kennedy brothers Thomas and Hugh Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7468/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi. I have a letter from my aunt saying that my great great grandfather Hugh Kennedy b.1842 came over to Durham, from Tyrone with his brother Thomas Kennedy b.1835 and cousin David Wilson b.1838. They were all coal miners. Thomas had a wife Isabella b.1841 also from Ireland and Thomas had a wife Mary b.1839 and in the 1861 Quarrington Hill, Durham census they had a daughter Martha b.1859 who was born in Durham Leadgate. My aunt's conclusion is that the three men came over in about 1859/9 and settled. She took over this research from her mother who started in 1970 and they are still no further forward in finding the parents and family of Thomas and Hugh. I know that a lot of records in Ireland were burnt and I am not sure how to start this search but if anyone can help I would appreciate it, I would love to use technology to help them since they have never used a computer and if I don't help I don't think that they will ever sort this out. Thanks Alison Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her obituary states she was from County Tyrone. She married Owen McFarland from County Leitram (1818-1898). They married in Boston in 1849. Their first child was born in Boston. The rest of their 8 children were born in San Francisco. The children were Mary E., Helen Frances, John Bernard, Margaret A., Annie Gertrude, Isabella C., Charles Peter and Rosanna Catherine. Rosanna's sister was Margaret Early (1835 to 1884). She married John Henry O'Brien (1831-1878). Both died in San Francisco. Their 5 children were born in California. They are Charles Anthony, John Francis, James, Joseph Henry and Clara Marie. I have all of the obituaries and burials. I am trying to find out when they arrived and where they came from in Tyrone. Their death, burial and obituaries only list County Tyrone. I would appreciate any help. Thank you, Martha Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Suggest you post on the CoTyrone mailing list and ask for someone who can get your more details. Len Swindley does the assizes transcriptions. Good luck! Reason is, that this first mass-migration was largely church centered. The minister who came with Means and his group was from Garvagh, County Londonderry. I would suggest looking to Londonderry or Antrim for your origins. A Robert Means is in the Antrim 1669 Muster Rolls in the Dunluce region. Author: carolinealleynee Surnames: Evans, Farrington Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7464/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I come up against a brick wall with trying to find out more about an ancestor, one George Henry Evans - a protestant clergyman who served in India and then in a parish near Bristol - the 1861 England census says he was born in 1806 in County Tyrone, Ireland. He attended Trinity College Dublin and graduated B.A. 1828, M.A. 1832. Someone who was visiting Dublin looked at the Alumni Dublinenses and said the name of his father was given as "John" - but I cannot get over there myself - it is likely his father attended TCD as well and maybe brothers. The next instance recorded is his marriage in Cheltenham in 1840 where he was listed as a clergyman with the East India Company. He married Maria Harriet Farrington [b 5 November 1820] daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir Henry Maturin Farrington, 3rd Bt. and Jane Curry. I have followed his life and career thereafter to his death, but I cannot go any further back with him, cannot find his parents, etc. btw The name George re-occurs - he called one of his sons George, and a grandson was called George. Any help/guidance would be appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
