Author: BurgessDonnelly Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7470.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Some of the information may be available online, depending on when your Irish ancestors lived. Civil registration of vital records began for Roman Catholics in 1864 and for Protestants in 1845. You may find transcriptions of some records on www.familysearch.org (free) www.emeraldancestors.com (paying subscription) www.rootsireland.ie (pay per view) If you are lucky enough that one of your families came from Drumragh, digital images of the Catholic Church records are online and searchable at http://www.drumraghparish.com/archiver.asp (free) Many records are held at the local level, so you will need to narrow your focus to the Townland and Parish level. Two books you may find useful "Tracing Your Irish Ancestors" by John Grenham "A New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland" PRONI has recently put digital images of the Valuation Revision Books online. These records can help locate where your family lived. http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/val12b.htm (free) A personal visit to PRONI can be useful for vital records not available online. If any of your families were still in Ireland in 1901 and 1911, the census for those years is online and searchable at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ (free) There are plans to digitize more records from Ireland, but that is a year or more away. http://www.irishtimes.com/business/sectors/technology/library-seeks-help-to-digitise-collection-1.536979 Have a great trip and happy hunting! I have not been able to locate Robert Smyth in Tyrone land records although there are other Smyths here. Robert's son Hugh's marriage record says he's from Crossdernot & his wife Jane Booth is from Drummond (townland of Crossdernot) so this is where I have centered my search. I have tried in vain to find William George Smyth's birth information. It should be in the civil records... but it's not turned up in ancestry, familysearch, findmypast, ancestryireland, rootsireland, emerald ancestors, etc. If someone can find these folks, I would appreciate it! Author: BurgessDonnelly Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7469.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm sure you know that you are searching for records BEFORE the beginning of civil registration in Ireland, so records are scarce to non-existent. At the very least, very difficult to find, unless you know the exact Church where the parties married or were baptized. With William George, you stand a slightly better chance, since civil registration for Protestants began in 1845. Have you found Robert Smyth in Griffiths Valuation and the Revision Books? That location may help you pinpoint the Church. Good luck! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a hunch that these two met in Maghera, Derry, then married and moved to Pomeroy, Tyrone. Not necessarily in that order. They had at least two sons: Hugh (b in Derry or Tyrone 1841) and William George (b Tyrone 1848-1850). Both sons emigrated to Canada in the 1860's. Any help would be appreciated! Author: EileenWilson001 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7467.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The 1852 marriage for Margaret in Massachusetts does not name parents; however, it does indicate that she was living in Nashua at the time. Believe this to be Nashua, New Hampshire. Wonder if this family in the 1850 US Census in Nashua, New Hampshire is related: Early, Thomas, aged 30, laborer, born Ireland Early, Polly, aged 26, born Ireland Early, Patrick, aged 15, born Ireland Early, Moriah L., aged 12, born Ireland Early, Cate, aged 10, born Ireland Early, John, aged 3, born New Hampshire Early, Ann, aged 2, born New Hampshire Early, Rosanna, aged 1, born New Hampshire Polly is not the mother of the older children given the age difference, but is the mother to the youngest three which suggests a second marriage for Thomas in New Hampshire. Marriage records at famiysearch.org suggests that Polly's maiden name was Jarvis. Also in Nashua in the 1850 census is a Bridget Early, aged 23, single, born Ireland. I find the marriage of a Bridget Early, aged 21, of Lowell, Massachusetts to a John Lonergan of Nashua, New Hampshire in 1851. She is the daughter of Charles & Margaret Early. I then find a marriage for a Bridget Early, aged 35, born Ireland, to a David Londergan, aged 46, in 1865 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. It says first marriage for both. Bridget's parents are given as John & Bridget. Either a coincidence or its the same person with different parents' names. I have done a bit of research on my side of the family but found this too confusing to know how to start. It hadn't occurred to me to look at Scotlands People but I have just done that following your suggestion and they must have been there for Hugh to work at the Dalmellington Iron Company. It also gives the marriage date of the parents. I hadn't found the families in 1911 and now I have details of where they come from which should narrow it down. I now have a whole weekend to play on the computer and follow up everything you have found for me. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: EileenWilson001 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7468.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Did you see that Hugh was enumerated twice in the 1861 census? Here's the other entry from Coxhoe, Co. Durham: Kennedy, Thomas, Head, aged 26, married, coal miner, born Ireland Kennedy, Isabella, Wife, aged 20, married, born Ireland Kennedy, Hugh, Brother, unmarried, aged 19, coal miner, born Ireland Wilson, David, Cousin, married, aged 23, coal miner, born Ireland Wilson, Mary, Cousin, married, aged 22, born Ireland Wilson, Martha, Cousin, aged 2, born Durham Leadgate The Quarrington census only shows Thomas, Isabella & Hugh. Martha is not noted with them, so she is more likely the child of David & Mary Wilson (as noted in the above census). You should find the marriage for Hugh, likely in Durham County, which should at least name his father, and hopefully, give you a more definite place of birth. What about death certificates for all of them. I found an entry in the BMD index for the marriage of a Hugh Kennedy in Durham in 1861 (Volume 10a, page 336). He married either Eleanor Forster or Dorothy Fairless). I will guess it was Dorothy, given this 1871 England Census entry in West Rainton, Co. Durham: Kennedy, Hugh, Head, married, aged 28, coal miner, born Ireland, Co. Tyrone Kennedy, Dorothy, Wife, married, aged 28, born Durham, Philadelphia Kennedy, John, Son, scholar, aged 8, born Durham Cassopp Kennedy, Eliza Jane, Daughter, aged 6, born Scotland Ayrshire Kennedy, Thomas, Son, aged 2, born Durham West Rainton Kennedy, Mary Ann, Daughter, aged 8 months, born Durham North Birchburn(?) So, in between the two census, they were in Scotland which gives you an advantage. Find Eliza Jane's birth record in Scotland, and it may provide more information about Hugh's place of birth (the Scottish records are way more detailed than the English). ScotlandsPeople is the paid site from which to search and order certificates. I did find the index entry at familysearch.org for the baptism: Name: Eliza Jane Kennedy Gender: Female Christening Date: Christening Place: Birth Date: 10 Jun 1864 Birthplace: DALMELLINGTON,AYR,SCOTLAND Death Date: Name Note: Race: Father's Name: Hugh Kennedy Father's Birthplace: Father's Age: Mother's Name: Dorithy Firlass There are other Kennedys who show up in Delmellington which may or may not be related. The 1911 census gives a more exact place (Dungannon, Co. Tyrone). Dungannon straddles the border between Co. Armagh and Co. Tyrone. David may have been a cousin from slightly further away given the 1871 English Census in West Rainton: Wilson, David, Head, married, aged 36, coal miner, born Co. Down, Ireland Wilson, Mary, Wife, married, aged 30, born Co. Down, Ireland Wilson, Martha, Daughter, aged 12, born Durham, Ludgate Wilson, Mary Jane, Daughter, aged 9, born Durham Freehold Houses(?)
