I did a really quick extract of TOORISH families in the 1901 Census of Ireland. There are only two Michaels in the lot, a Mick Joseph born abt 1897 and a Michael born 1846. I strongly believe that this letter was written by Joseph (probably Joseph Michael), son of John TOORISH and Catherine O'DONNELL. Two of the four brothers in this family (Joseph and John McConalogue) served in the Canadian military in WWI. >From his Canadian military attestation paper I learned that Joseph was recruited quite late in the conflict, 18 Dec 1917 to be exact. His N.O.K. was John TOORISH of Strabane, Ireland. It appears that he proceeded overseas in or about June 1918 as a member of a reserve battalion, but the war probably ended before he was ever due to be sent to the Front. Here is his obituary from the Toronto Daily Star, 8 Sep 1942: FOLKLORE AUTHORITY JOSEPH TOORISH DIES Requiem high mass will be sung at St. Basil's Church Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock for Joseph Toorish, who died Saturday. Mr. Toorish, a native of Strabane, County Tyrone, was considered an authority on Irish folklore and literature, and until recently was a frequent contributor of Irish witicisms to the press. He was one of the last of the old school of Irish patriots who, for a quarter of a century, kept ever green the memory of the Emerald Isle in Toronto. He was also a pianist, and his repertoire of Gaelic melodies was a feature of March 17 concerts. Mr. Toorish loved horses, and the stables his family maintained were among the most notable in the north of Ireland. He was an accountant, and prior to his retirement he had been connected with several of Toronto's largest business concerns. He is survived by his widow, Mary Watson Toorish, one son, Frank, and a daughter, Enda. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He emigrated to Toronto in 1909. For your entertainment (literally), Bernie TOORISH, son of John McConalogue TOORISH (1894-1970), was the lead singer of The Four Lads, a quartet that had huge success on the hit parade back in the 50's and 60's. > Would you like a copy of the letter? I think, but have not yet been able to confirm, that Loughlin Donnelly died in Ireland. Catherine apparently arrived in NYC about 1866 (in country 13 years at death, according to her NYC death certificate). Only confirmed child is my GGF, William L Donnelly (~1852-1932). I have several other suspected children, but I have not yet been able to lock them down. I don't want to go off the track of this thread - we were talking McGarrity and Tyrone, not Donnelly. In 1830 they had a lease in Ackinduff Townland, Killeeshil Parish, which adjoins Termonmaquirk Parish on the South. They migrated in 1846 to Mara or Brock township in Ontario county, Ontario province Canada. From tombstones Owen's dates are 1793-1870 and Margaret's are 1796-1866.I have Patrick, John, Ann, Henry, Francis. Margaret Ellen, and Ellen as their family. Ellen was my grandmother. I have details on her, Margaret Ellen and Francis. Interesting to me at least is that Margaret's younger single sister, Bridget Donnelly, lived with them and when they died, she lived with my grandparents Cornelius Boyle and Ellen Doyle. Cornelius and Ellen with their family ventured from Ontario in 1882 to Dakota Territory (now North Dakota.) Bridget came with them. Although Bridget was very likely 75 years of age, she claimed to be 65 and filed her own homestead claim. Owen and Margaret are buried in the St. Columbkille Cemetery in Uptergrove, Ontario. Uptergrove is a short way south of Orillia and 80 miles or so north of Toronto. Bridget is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Sheldon, North Dakota as are my grandparents Cornelius and Ellen. Also buried there is Francis Doyle. He died in 1904. In his old age he got wanderlust. He left his wife and large, but probably mostly grown family to come to Dakota were he lived from some years with his three bachelor Boyle nephews. He thought he was in the "wild west." Irish genealogy is difficult. On my Boyle side although I have known ancestors born in the mid 1770s, I know only three surname, Boyle, Doyle and Donnelley. I understand Killeeshil and nearby areas were the ancestral Donnelly areas. Does any this ring any bells with you? The letter is written to Mrs John Toorish, Strabane. I'm pretty sure the surname is Toorish, but the last three letters are definitely 'ish', and it is from her 'loving little son' Michael, who was a bank clerk before the war. In the letter he mentions Pat (who is married), who he has asked to write, so possibly Pat is a brother. Possibly as the letter is addressed only to his mother, and there is no mention in it of his father, that John Toorish is deceased. The letter is dated 6th April 1918, and is sent from 15th Reserve battalion, Bramshill, Hants. I have looked online to try and find out about the family, but haven't turned up anything conclusive.
