It was clearly a very rare name and I'd suggest therefore that it did not appear on your Acheson ancestor's birth certificate. He may have been christened plain Charles Acheson. There's no birth for someone named Charles Acheson in Co Tyrone in the period 1871 - 1875. The nearest (and the only birth in 1873) was a Charles Lewis Acheson whose birth was registered in Londonderry in 1873 Volume 7 page 228. Might be worth getting that to see if the parents names agree with those on his marriage cert. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You could try the Canadian archives at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca Click Genealogy and then click Immigration & Citizenship. Some of the ships manifests into Quebec are searchable online and many others are on microfiche, which you can order via a library etc. Good luck. Florence
Does anyone know how to find a ship record/manifest for the following? I'm looking for my ggg grandfather's brother Andrew Murphy who supposedly emigrated on this ship. Brig Sylvanus, Belfast to Quebec http://ied.dippam.ac.uk/records/34807 Thanks for any help, Ally
Hello Listers Just a final word on the 1926 census of Northern Ireland. It was not destroyed by German bombs, it was pulped by unnamed civil servants within the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1940 as such an amount of paper was considered to be a major fire hazard in war time. This is not a shocking new revelation. It has been common knowledge for many years that the 1926 census for NI did not exist. I don't think that it's loss will affect greatly genealogists in that most of the enquiries I receive are for 1826 or 1726, not 1926 best regards Robert www.ulsterancestry.com > Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2013 19:46:53 -0400 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] > Subject: [CoTyIre] Links for Census on one web site > > Found a new web site (for me at least), thought I'd share. Some readers prefer just the raw data, while others prefer context and story, so, I offer both approaches. The story version is on my blog, and includes a link to the new data I have posted. See the blog: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.ca/2013/06/geekdom.html The link in the 2nd paragraph connects to the 300+ pages of notes on deeds that I have just uploaded. The blog post also features a deed from Thomas and Mary JACKSON in 1788, and talks about why these deeds matter for Irish history and genealogical research. For those who prefer just the raw data, here is a link to the recent Deeds research I have posted (Note: this is a site with no ads or fees -- all is free): http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/2013%20versions/Links-Deeds-Notes.html You can catch up with other new material that I have posted via the New hyperlink: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/misc/whatsnew.htm My research covers most counties in Ireland, as well as a range of key surnames, so please forgive the cross-postings on various research sites. Unfortunately, Google Site search has stopped indexing my new material properly, and seems to be hit and miss with lots of my older posts. I need to hire a teckie to fix that, so my apologies in the interim. Otherwise - Enjoy, Sharon -- Sharon Oddie Brown, Roberts Creek, BC, Canada. History Project: www.thesilverbowl.com

Author: DaveBoylan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/7443.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello PaulinePeel50, I'm not a descendant of the Booths and related families, but found quite a bit of information about them at a couple of different websites. You may already have some of this information. I first located the marriage index for John Booth and Mary Devlin at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Tyrone. The index shows they were married in the Ardboe Catholic Church in 1845. Ardboe is also spelled Arboe, as is the Civil Parish in which the church was located. The index follows: 1 match for the search criteria: Booth John 1845 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: John Spouse's Surname: Devlin Spouse's First Name: Mary Father's Surname: Father's First Name: Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Year: 1845 Parish/District: Parish: ARDBOE (RC) ____ The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/ Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you'll first have to register. Registration is free. You'll also be able to access the marriage index for John Booth and Mary Devlin that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain a transcription of the marriage from the IFHF. You'll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcription. The IFHF website has more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=78 One advantage of ordering records from the IFHF is that as soon as credit card information is processed, the record is sent to your computer, so that you don't have to wait very long to view it. The marriage record for John and Mary may include additional information, such as the names of the witnesses to the marriage. To see a sample Catholic Church marriage transcription from the IFHF website, go to: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=samplerecords#chmarriage Next I uncovered the baptism indexes for 6 children of John Booth and Mary Devlin. The children were baptized in the Ardboe Catholic Church. The names of the children and their years of baptism are Mary Jane (1845); Teresa (1847); George (1854); William (1856); Lewis (1860); and Catherine (1863). You'll notice a six year gap between the baptisms of Teresa (1847) and your great grandfather George (1854). This was probably due to the Great Famine which struck Ireland between 1845 and 1851. Having more children to feed during the height of the Famine would have placed a burden on John to feed his family. The six baptism indexes are below: 1 match for the search criteria: Booth Mary Jane 1845 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: Mary Jane Father's Surname: Booth Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Devlin Mother's First Name: Mary Year: 1845 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Booth Teresa 1847 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: Teresa Father's Surname: Booth Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Devlin Mother's First Name: Mary Year: 1847 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Booth George 1854 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: George Father's Surname: Booth Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Devlin Mother's First Name: Mary Year: 1854 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Booth William 1856 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: William Father's Surname: Booth Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Devlin Mother's First Name: Mary Year: 1856 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Booth Lewis 1860 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: Lewis Father's Surname: Booth Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Devlin Mother's First Name: Mary Year: 1860 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Booth Catherine 1863 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: Catherine Father's Surname: Booth Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Devlin Mother's First Name: Mary Year: 1863 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ You can order the baptism transcriptions from the IFHF individually, or you can order them from one index. To order them from one index, do not include first names of the children. In place of the first names use the % sign as a wild card. Also do not include a year of baptism. The index will look like this: 6 matches for the search criteria: Booth % Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Booth First Name: % Father's Surname: Booth Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Devlin Mother's First Name: Mary Year: Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ The baptism transcriptions may possibly include the exact date of the baptism for each child, the address of the parents at the time of the baptism, the father's occupation, the names of the godparents, and the name of the parish priest who baptized each child. To view a sample Catholic Church baptism transcription from the IFHF go to the following link: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=samplerecords#baptism According to information found at the IFHF the Ardboe Catholic Church baptisms and marriages are transcribed from 1827-1900. Knowing this, I thought it possible that baptisms for John Booth and Mary Devlin may have also been recorded in the Ardboe Catholic Church if they had been in their mid to late teens when they married. I looked for, but did not find a baptism index for John Booth in the late 1820s or early 1830s. But I did find two baptism indexes, on of which may pertain to Mary Devlin, though without knowing the names of Mary's parents, this is only speculation. I found one index for a Mary Devlin baptized in the Ardboe Catholic Church in 1827. The IFHF baptism indexes do not provide the names of the parents for the child. You have to submit first names to the search engine, to see which names are accepted as the child's parents. The search engine in this case accepted Patrick Devlin as Mary's father and Sara as her mother. I did not find Sara's maiden name. The 1827 baptism index for Mary Devlin is below: 1 match for the search criteria: Devlin Mary 1827 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Devlin First Name: Mary Father's Surname: Devlin Father's First Name: Patrick Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Sara Year: 1827 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ I also found an index for a Mary Devlin baptized in the Ardboe Catholic Church in 1828. The IFHF search engine accepted Francis as her father, and Mary as her mother: 1 match for the search criteria: Devlin Mary 1828 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Tyrone Surname: Devlin First Name: Mary Father's Surname: Devlin Father's First Name: Francis Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Mary Year: 1828 Parish/District: ARDBOE (RC) ____ Both Mary Devlins would have been old enough to have married in 1845. The Mary Devlin baptized in 1827 would have been 18 years old in 1845, while the Mary Devlin baptized in 1828 would have been 17 years old. But again, I'm not sure which, if either of the Mary Devlins would be the future wife of John Booth. You would have to order the baptism transcriptions for both Mary Devlins to find out what the maiden names for their mothers were. While John Booth and Mary Devlin may have been married in the Ardboe Catholic Church, and had their children baptized in the church, they did not necessarily reside in Ardboe itself. They may have lived in one of the surrounding townlands. To see if I could find out where they lived I looked for John Booth in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation. Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. The valuation for the Arboe Civil Parish in County Tyrone was completed by the year 1859, the year before John and Mary Booth's son Lewis was born. Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not enumerate individual members of a family, such as husband, wife, and children in a household residence. Those named in the valuation were individuals who leased property. Each person who paid to lease the property was called an "Occupier." The other person listed in Griffiths Valuation was the person who owned the property, or who worked as the middleman for the owner. This person was called the "Immediate Lessor." In many cases, people with the same last names leased property in the same town. If the town were small enough they were probably related. You can access Griffiths Valuation transcriptions and original copies for free at the askaboutireland website link at: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml I found a John Booth in Griffiths Valuation that I believe refers to your ancestor. The valuation shows that John leased property in the townland of Killymenagh, Civil Parish of Arboe, County Tyrone: No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 18a Civil Parish: Arboe Townland: Killymenagh Occupier: John Booth Immediate Lessor: Trustees John Mackey Description of Tenement: House, office, and land Area of Land: 17 Acres, 1 Rood, 15 Perches, Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 14 Pounds, 5 Shillings Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 1 Pound, 5 Shillings Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 15 Pounds, 10 Shillings ____ Griffiths Valuation shows that John Booth leased over 17 acres of land, a house and an "office" from Immediate Lessors who were the trustees for John Mackey. The land was valued at 14 Pounds and 5 Shillings, while the house and office were valued at 1 Pound and 5 Shillings. The total valuation for John Booth's lease was 15 Pounds and 10 Shillings. He would have paid a percentage of the value toward the tax. An office in a Griffiths Valuation record could refer to any type of outbuilding, such as a barn, stable, shed, blacksmith shop, piggery, etc. The number at the top of the Griffiths Valuation entry, 18a, refers to the location of John Booth's lease in Killymenagh on an Ordnance Survey Map from the time period. John Booth is named a second time in Griffiths Valuation in Killymenagh. In this case however, he is the Immediate Lessor for an unoccupied house at Map Reference No. 18b. No land is with this property. He was likely the middleman for the property, rather than the owner. The house was valued at 5 Shillings. He would not have paid a tax on this house, as only those properties valued over 5 Pounds were taxed: No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 18b Civil Parish: Arboe Townland: Killymenagh Occupier: Unoccupied Immediate Lessor: John Booth Description of Tenement: House Area of Land: - Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: - Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 5 Shillings Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 5 Shillings ____ Also leasing property in Killymenagh, at Map Reference No. 25 is a Mary Devlin. She may have been related to John Booth's wife, Mary Devlin. The entry for Mary Devlin shows she is leasing a house, office, and over 9 acres of land from the Trustees John Mackey. The land is valued at 7 Pounds and 5 Shillings while the house and office were valued at 15 Shillings. The total valuation for her lease was 8 Pounds: No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 25 Civil Parish: Arboe Townland: Killymenagh Occupier: Mary Devlin Immediate Lessor: Trustees John Mackey Description of Tenement: House, office, and land Area of Land: 9 Acres, 1 Rood, 0 Perches, Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 7 Pounds, 5 Shillings Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 15 Shillings Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 8 Pounds ____ I looked for the townland of Killymenagh on a Google Map of County Tyrone, but didn't find it. But I did find Ardboe on a Google Map which you can view at: http://tinyurl.com/pcouade Ardboe is situated on the western shore of Lough Neagh, and is home to the Ardboe High Cross. You can read about the Ardboe High Cross at the Wikipedia link at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardboe_High_Cross Also see: http://www.megalithicireland.com/High Cross Ardboe.htm http://www.chrono.qub.ac.uk/local/tyrone/Ardboe/ THE CAMPBELL FAMILY I found the baptism indexes for six children of James Campbell and Mary Hughes at the IFHF website for County Tyrone. The children were baptized min the Ardboe Catholic Church. The names of the children and their years of baptism are: John (1834); John (1838); James (1840); Brigid (1842); Joseph (1844); and your great grandmother, Mary Ann (1846). You'll notice there are two baptism indexes for a John Campbell. This indicates the first-born John Campbell had died. Your great grandmother Mary Ann was born a year after the Great Famine overtook Ireland: 1 match for the search criteria: Campbell John 1834 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. But I did find a James Campbell in Griffiths Valuation in the Civil Parish of Arboe, leasing property in the townland of Anneeter More. I believe this entry may refer to your James Campbell. The valuation shows that James leased a house, offices, over 8 acres of land, and shore property from the Ven. Archdeacon Stuart. The "Ven." Stands for Venerable, and probably refers to an archdeacon in the Church of Ireland. The land James leased was valued at 3 Pounds and 10 Shillings, while the house and outbuildings were valued at 15 Shillings. The total valuation for the property was 4 Pounds, 5 Shillings. The "shore" that James leased was probably located on Lough Neagh: No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 4a Civil Parish: Arboe Townland: Anneeter More Occupier: James Campbell Immediate Lessor: Ven. I didn't find a marriage index for Pat Keenan and Mary Ann Campbell, but like Moren, who replied to your post on March 9, I did uncover a marriage index for John Keenan and Mary Ann Campbell. The first marriage index you see below is from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at: https://familysearch.org/search This is a civil marriage index rather than a church marriage index. The index shows that the marriage of John Keenan and Mary Ann Campbell was recorded in Coagh, Tyrone on 22 October 1865. The index further shows that John Keenan's father was John Keenan, while Mary Ann Campbell's father was James Campbell. The index follows: John Keenan, "Ireland Marriages, 1619-1898" Name: John Keenan Birth Date: 1833 Birthplace: Age: 32 Spouse's Name: Mary Anne Campbell Spouse's Birth Date: 1847 Spouse's Birthplace: Spouse's Age: 18 Event Date: 22 Oct 1865 Event Place: Coagh, Tyr, Ireland Father's Name: John Keenan Mother's Name: Spouse's Father's Name: James Campbell Spouse's Mother's Name: Marital Status: Single Previous Wife's Name: Spouse's Marital Status: Single Spouse's Previous Husband's Name: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M70234-5 System Origin: Ireland-EASy Reference ID: 663 GS Film number: 101483 = Marriage records, 1845-1870, in the General Registry Office of Ireland. You can order this film from your nearest Family History Center. If you don't have a Family History Center near your home, you can order the marriage record from the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. For information, costs, and an application form, go to the GRO website at: http://www.groireland.ie/ I also found the church marriage index for John Keenan and Mary Ann Campbell at the IFHF website for County Tyrone. The index shows their marriage took place in the Ardboe Catholic Church in 1865: 1 match for the search criteria: Keenan John 1865 Parish: ARDBOE (RC) Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. I found three children in civil birth indexes and church baptism indexes.. These children are John (1866); Elizabeth/Eliza (1869); and Patrick (1874). The civil registration birth indexes for these children were found at the LDS website as well as at the IFHF website for County Tyrone, while the Ardboe Catholic Church baptisms were found at the IFHF website. The LDS civil birth indexes for each child are accompanied by microfilm source information. Only one of the LDS birth indexes, John's, shows his birth was recorded in Stewartstown, Tyrone. The other LDS indexes just specify Tyrone as the place of birth. You can order the films from your nearest Family History Center, or if you prefer, can order the birth records from the GRO in Roscommon Town. Following each the LDS indexes are the IFHF civil birth and church baptism indexes for each child. The IFHF indexes show the civil births were recorded in Stewartstown, Tyrone, while baptisms took place in the Ardboe Catholic Church: John Kenan, "Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881" Name: John Kenan Gender: Male Christening Date: Christening Place: Birth Date: 15 Nov 1866 Birthplace: 0478,STEWARTSTOWN,TYRONE,IRELAND Death Date: Name Note: Race: Father's Name: John Kenan Father's Birthplace: Father's Age: Mother's Name: Maryanne Kampbell Mother's Birthplace: Mother's Age: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C70129-7 System Origin: Ireland-ODM Reference ID: GS Film number: 101135 = Quarterly returns of births in Ireland, 1864-1955, General Register Office; Ireland. I also looked for George and Ann in the 1901 and 1911 census returns for Ireland but didn't find them. But I did uncover a John Booth and daughters Mary J/Mary Jane, and Annie/Anna Eliza in the 1901 and 1911 census enumerations for Ireland. I believe these census records may pertain to George's parents and siblings. If you recall, Griffiths valuation had shown that John Booth leased property in the townland of Killymenagh, Civil Parish of Arboe. The 1901 and 1911 census show that John and his daughters were living in Killymenagh. Both census returns also show that John was a farmer and a widower. I looked for Campbells in Anneeter More in the 1901 and 1911 census returns. The 1901 census shows a 46 year old unmarried Susan Campbell as the head of the household in an address of house number 4, Anneeter More. The census also shows that she was a farmer and a grocer and born in County Tyrone. In the household with her is her 74 year old mother Elizabeth, who is listed as a widow. Also in the household is Susan's 11 year old cousin Bridget Devlin, working as a servant. Her daughter Susan is shown to be 56 years old and still singe. Also in the household is Elizabeth's 40 year old son John, who is a Catholic priest. The household also includes a servant, 69 year old widower, Isaac McCann.
