He died in Watsonville, Ca, around 1918 (not sure on the year), leaving 6 children and wife Margaret. Here are some notes that I had about Eugene, but he must have had another sibling: Eugene followed his brother John to NY (the latter was a priest in NY and missionary in Liberia) in 1830's and worked with leading dry-goods business, did well, went St Louis, and gold fever to SF in 1850. Found dry goods and banking house in SF, later the Donohue-Kelly Banking Co. First wife died 1848, married Margaret Hughs in 1857. Author: admeto Surnames: Burton Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/556.1107.1559.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ian I have not gone/been able to go back further than James BURTON as I think that the chances of me taking the wrong direction (ie choosing the wrong ancestor) are rather great. John Burton identified his place of birth on his marriage certificate in 1881 to Mary Emma GOOLD (Reg. 3158 Births, Deaths and Marriages [Victoria]) as Carrowcolman. The certificate identifies his father as James BURTON, farmer (dec) and Isabella TAYLOR(dec). The witness to the certificate was his brother William James BURTON. By using Rootsweb, I can see the Townland of Carrowcolman, in the Civil Parish of Clonfeacle. (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tyrone/parishes/tl/clonfeacle_tl.html) Where I get mixed up though is in the Griffiths Valuation of 1860. I can see 10 BURTONS listed in the Householders Index in the Griffiths Valuation and the Tithe Applotment Book of 1833. (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tyrone/parishes/householders/clonfeacle1.html) I can also see a James BURTON listed twice as a tenant in Cadian, Clonfeacle on (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tyrone/parishes/griffiths/clonfeacle/clonfeacle.html) but have no idea where or to what Cadian refers or whether this/these are other James BURTONS altogether. Sorry if I have merely added to the confusion. Robert Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am a descendant of John Burton (1847-1902) who migrated from Carrowcolman (Parish of Clonfeacle) in County Tyrone to Melbourne, Australia in 1873. John Burton's parents were James Burton (farmer) and Isabella Taylor. 3. My interactive map of the Administration districts of Ireland now includes Limerick. The map now shows: - maps of county and modern council boundaries for all of Ireland - the names of all Baronies and PLUs in Ireland - the locations of all baronies and PLUs in Limerick and Ulster - note the location is indicated by a marker showing the approximate centre, not a boundary map - the names of all Civil Parishes in Limerick and Ulster - the Civil Parish boundary maps for all of Northern Ireland and Limerick - the names of all RC Parishes in Limerick and Ulster - either the locations (as above) or boundary maps, for all RC Parishes in Northern Ireland and Limerick - all names and some boundary maps for Antrim Townlands - a selection of names and boundary maps of townlands in the rest of Ulster and Limerick Please let me know if you spot any errors. Some observations of web resources: - In Limerick, "The New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland" and the several websites which have copied this map include a few errors (the first that I have noticed in this excellent resource): - parish 23 in the east is actually 22 - one part of Loghill Parish not shown - it fills the little 'dimple' shown on the north coast in Kilfergus parish - parish 57 in the NE is actually 37, Clonkeen - Both the IreAtlas and Irish Ancestors sites contain a surprising number of errors (well probably not that surprising when you consider that the original is 1000+ pages of very fine type). They are both sourced from the General Index to the 1851 census. Errors include spelling (usually in places that are very hard to read in the book), townlands where the transcriber has swapped lines and put it into the wrong parish or county and some parishes which have been lost altogether. My observation is that the error rate is about 3-5% with IreAtlas being a bit better than Irish Ancestors and so it is best to check both and then triple check if they differ. - Also in looking up records, you should keep in mind that the parish a townland is in differs, sometimes very significantly, from the 1851 census to Griffith's Valuation. I have included some notes in the popup information windows on the map where I have noted differences. -- Kind Regards Murray Christchurch New Zealand Visit us at KiwiCelts.com <http://kiwicelts.com> * Cemeteries of New Zealand - Map, List and Web-links * Parishes of Northern Ireland - Map * Our Family History

    3. Barbara Hickey said: "Out of your names from Tyrone in1100 to 1600 -- Do you think that Corren came from Curran? Also where would McStravick have come from. Corren and McStravick were both from County Tyrone." ============================================================= Good morning Barbara and all. The old surnames of Ireland were generated from very old records like annuals of Ireland (various territories) for example. Those names were extracted and booked in alpha order by surname which was primarily an index I believe. >From there the names were broken down by county (old or new). The fly in the ointment was that not all names were assigned to a county or territory by other discription. In leu of information about where they lived, we checked those names through the annuls and found most of the areas that surname was substantially associated with. So from that our task is the same task that we always have.......to try to establish supporting documentation. Finally, much of what we hear was not written in stone, and if it was written in stone, often mispelled. Thank you all and I hope this helps with a tiny clue perhaps to lead to another step in our research. donkelly -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message.
