Here is what I know as fact: Archie's father was Alexander Condy per 2 different branches who just knew. Archie must have been one of the older children, while Hamilton was much younger according to census records and ship records. Archie was born in 1848, and he married a cousin Mary Wood. Mary, her sister Margaret and Archie came over on the same ship. I am assuming they were married in Illinois as that is my grandfather's place of birth. Then they migrated west to Big Springs, NE where they homesteaded and are buried. Secondary verification came from an interview of another branch of the Condys. She provided names of siblings, one of which was her father, Hamilton who came to the states at the age of 15. Many of the future generations bear the namesakes of Hamilton, Alexander, Samuel, George, and Edward. During this taped interview, Aunt Blue mentioned many of Mary Wood's siblings, Rev. Samuel Wood, etc. and said they resided in York Co., NE and I have verified that Rev. Samuel died in the 1880's. I found Samuel, Gertrude his wife, daughter S. W. and sister Margaret residing in 1880 Census south of York in Sutton, NE. Margaret is listed as the sister of Rev. Wood. When we went to Big Springs, NE for a funeral, Isabella Wood, an old maid per Aunt Blue's audio tape, is buried not far from Archie and Mary. Mary was born in 1847 and Isabella Wood was born about the same time.(sorry cannot access my data as I am logged on under grandson's user ID) When I called the cemetery office, I was told that Isabella Wood's parents were Samuel Wood and Jane Wilson. She was not sure who provided this info but was going to check back in her notes, but thought it came from a descendent of Margaret Wood-McCormick. This ties into info recd over 10 yr ago from an Armstrong in England who had an ancestor Armstrong who married Elizabeth (or Sarah) Condy and the marriage was witnessed by Hugh Wilson, who is supposedly related to Pres. Woodrow Wilson. An Armstrong family homesteaded across the road from Archie Condy's farm. I remember parents saying that they were not direct relation but shirt=tail relation. The informant from England mentioned Omagh and some! thing about being on the border of Co Tyrone and another county. The Drumquin info is questionable and not verified. Another source had relayed info that the Condys were related to Pres. Grant but have been unable to tie my Condys into his tree. Hopefully someone can tie into these tidbits of information and make some connections. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Dear List, Please excuse my recent typo regarding this family. The year should be 1859 of arrival in Australia. My excuses, Christine
Dear List Members, I am researching my ancestors in the Wasson family. John Wasson and his wife Jane (nee McConnell) came to Australia on board the ship Daphne in 1959 (departed from London). I believe they married in 1855 in Ireland. John was probably born in Co. Tyrone. I am seeking any details of their life in Ireland, their Irish families and how they came to travel to Australia. Many thanks, Christine Aus, Newcastle, NSW
Here's what I was able to find on the WASSON surname in Co. Tyrone According to the "Householders Index," only 5 heads of household were recorded in Griffith's Valuation in 1860 (a year after your people had emigrated) and were located in the same Poor Law Union of Castlederg and both Barony of Omagh West but in two different civil parishes Ardstraw and Urney. WASSON Householders Recorded Civil Parish Poor Law Union Year of Valuation Present In Parish Year of Survey 1 ARDSTRAW 4 URNEY WASSONs were present in both of these parishes in the Tithe Applotment circa 1833. I hope this is helpful. -Clare L. -----Original Message----- <<< am researching my ancestors in the Wasson family. Londonderry Sentinel Published Date: 02 July 2008 By Freelance A LONDONDERRY author bringing out a new edition of his book charting the fortunes of local soldiers fighting in the first world war is looking for Sentinel readers' help in identifying the youngest member of the regiment. Gardiner Mitchell from Eglinton is bringing out a new edition of his book Three Cheers for the Derrys! in the autumn and anyone with information and photos of the 10th Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers has just four weeks to submit them for possible inclusion in the book. Three Cheers was first published in 1991 and Gardiner has unearthed a wealth of new information to boost the volume's size by a third for the definitive 2008 edition. Copies of the original, which has become scarce, have been seen going for up to £130 on auction site eBay. Gardiner is particularly interested to hear from anyone who can help him ascertain whether the soldier pictured beside this article is Reuben Orr, a young man who died at the age of 17 on 1st July 1916. Reuben was the youngest soldier in the regiment and was too young to join up when he left these shores to fight for the Empire against Germany. Under the heading of Headstones: The old High Crosses, some of which are simply magnificent, were erected by the High Kings of Eirne and range from the oldest on the Enishowen to midi Eirne. Practically all, over 90%, have been moved from their original locations and most more than once. Just because they are ancient headstones doesn't mean that anyone should be any less appalled than the destruction or removal of more "modern" headstones from the later period of the 17th and 18 century. What is interesting about these high crosses of our ancestors is that most if not all had their inscriptions, as to whom they were dedicated to, carved into the base of the cross below all the wonderful art work and just above the plinth or the base. Most of these crosses that remain are now cemetery decorations and most of these are associated with now ruined 16th and 17th century churches. A great many have had the inscription removed, covered up [in one case with a couple of stone animals, or have lost their plinth and the shafts are buried deep in the ground to support the cross and thereby obscuring the inscriptions. Like many, the inscriptions are lost do the nature of rain and weather on old limestone and the failure of church records to record anything other than who they had doing the work to relocate them as relics. Eric As in all genealogical endeavours, The further back you look, The further back you see.
The Index is now online for surnames beginning with A, B, C, D, E, and F. We are up to L in our transcriptions and when I get some more time, I hope to get more letters online. If you submitted a surname to the Surname Registry in June and it is not online, it is because it is floating around in cyberspace. We moved to a new server and suddenly our form wasn't working. But now all is well and it is fixed. So I apologize if yours is lost. Please resubmit another one and we will include it in our next update. Also, I had a note from someone who is trying to contact a person who listed a surname because they may be related. If your email changed, submit a new form and put 'change' in the field where you want the change.
