    1. [NIR-TYRONE] Cemetery Surveys - Example from Faye

    3. Its funny, I have asked and been asked this question before and each time I go through it Faye tells me something new. So while this example concerns a relative of mine, the example is "relative" to your and as it turns out an olde question of mine. So here it is, and I quote [both of your e-mails arrived this morning] Hello Eric, When David Todd worked on the headstone inscriptions in Old Donagheady he wrote this in the book: Procedure for Recording. The graveyard is roughly rectangular as may be seen from the Strabane District Council's map on page vii. Starting at the north-west corner, grids ten metres square were marked, proceeding along the east wall and coded A1, A2, A3, B1, B3 and so on. (This coding continued to H3) The grids coded 3 narrow slightly as they approach the west wall and are never the exact ten metres square; both north and south walls are 80 metres; the east is 32.5 and the west 27. The Macklin headstone is located in B2 #4 I have attempted to show you below the layout of his B2 grid 3 4 2 1 Headstone #1 - no name, #2 - Divine, #3 - Brown & #4 - Macklin (only part of name J. MACKL..... ) From: "Kathy" <bellmole@sympatico.ca> To: <nir-tyrone@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 14, 2008 5:00 AM Subject: Re: [NIR-TYRONE] Cemetery Surveys Thank you so much for the information Eric. 1. [NIR-TYRONE] Cemetery Surveys
    2. E Macklin
    3. Good morning Kathy: A "Cemetery Survey" is one where someone would create a geographical layout of the cemetery then layout a grid. Then they would summarize all existing headstones/monuments and inscriptions and place them on the grid. They would do this in order to determine how the plots were arranged and allotted to various individuals and families. Once that is done there will appear empty spaces on the grid which are then sounded to determine if some of the original stones which at one time were standing were now flat of the ground and in many cases for the older cemeteries, just under the surface of the ground. In this case they would be "retrieved" by removing surface material in order to read the inscription(s) on the stones. In a great many cases the stones are broken, which in this case they are left on the ground but re-assembled and repaired. At last there would be empty spaces which are then sounded to see if the plot had been used at all. Most if not all Burial Registers gave you everything but the location of the internment. The reason this is done is that in a great many cases cemeteries were used on a first come first served basis and filled in around some parts of the cemetery which had been allotted to some of the families. In this case we are dealing with some of the smaller cemeteries. The more current cemeteries all have grids with pre-determined plots laid out on a grid, all in nice neat rows and columns. The older ones were a bit of a jumble. In most cases the stones were of limestone and are no longer legible, even if they could be found. In the end, in many cases we are left with the notation, "that they are buried there, but now only God knows". So then that's it in a nut shell. Hope that answers your question. 1. [NIR-TYRONE] C of I Baptismal Registers - 1828-33 Period
    2. Eric and list, Regarding the COI registers, not all burned. The requirement at the time was that if the Church of Ireland rector did not have secure place to keep the registers (e.g., a safe), the originals were to be sent to Dublin for safekeeping -- ironic given the 1922 fire! HOWEVER, a number of registers were never turned over to Dublin and were kept in local custody. According to the Church of Ireland website, "[a]lmost half of the surviving registers were destroyed in 1922 and others have been lost at earlier periods. However, much of the lost information survives in transcripts and abstracts. The most recent published listing of parish registers is Noel Reid (ed) A table of Church of Ireland parochial records and copies (Irish Family History Society, Naas, 1994). In addition useful genealogical information may be had from other parish records especially vestry minute books, churchwardens' account books and cess applotment books." See http://ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=information&id=68 Regards, Clare -----Original Message----- Eric wrote: <<<Just finished taking a look at one of your more recent items covering Parish Registers for Co Tyrone.
