    3. Carol, You replied to a message that was posted to a message board (note the "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list" in the first line of the message) which was then forwarded (gatewayed) onto a mailing list. Instructions for replying to the posting via the message board are in the "Important Note" added by the gateway emailer. The "gateway" only goes in one direction - from the board to the list. So the person to whose message you replied has not seen your reply (unless they just happened to be subscribed to this mailing list). If you want them to see your reply, click on the message board URL in the original message to see it in the message board, select reply (you may need to log in or register first), then copy and paste your reply and remove any explicit newlines in the paragraphs to allow the browser to flow the text instead of breaking lines at specific points. -- John S Van Essen <vanes002@umn.edu> University of Minnesota Alumnus Baxter Minnesota Genealogy pages: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~vanes002/gen/ On Sun, 9 Nov 2008, Peter and Carol Sprott <psprott@kenora.com> wrote: > Your story sounds identical to mine. 1. [NIR-TYRONE] Richard Slack b. 1801
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: northwestpioneer Surnames: Slack Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/6707/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Richard Slack, reputed to be born in 1801 in County Tyrone, is said to have emigrated from County Fermanagh to Ontario, Canada in 1854 with his family: Christine Anderson (m. 1830), Margaret, Richard, Thomas, James, Susanna and Christina. The family were devout Methodists. I would like to know: 1) Who was the father of Richard Slack? 2) His son Thomas was born on October 25, 1832 in Ireland, but I am not sure if it was in County Tyrone or Fermanagh? Would it be possible to find any records in this time frame to answer these questions? Where would I start looking? This is a biography written for Richard Slack Sr in Ontario: Richard Slack Sr., will be remembered as one of the early pioneers. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1801. When a young man, he enlisted in the 36th Dragoon Guards and was seriously injured while defending the garrison at Edinburgh from the attacks of a mob in less than two years after he enlisted. His injuries were such as rendered his recovery doubtful, but he eventually came around all right, received his discharge, and for his brave conduct was granted a pension for life. In 1830 he married Christine Anderson, and in 1854 they came to Melancthon locating on the west half Lot 9, Con. 4 O.S. (hughReid) Mr. and Mrs. Slack were devout members of the Methodist Church, and previous to securing a regular minister, Mr. Slack gathered together in his own house those of his neighbors whom he could induce to attend, and led them in the public worship of God. 3. Your story sounds identical to mine. My ancestors headstones read natives of Tyrone also. You must know the town, parish or area that your relatives are from in Tyrone to find out anything. The northern Irish archives suffered a fire in 1922 (?) and the records were destroyed. Therefore going to Parish church records is necessary and you must have more details. What I have been doing is scouring Canadian records for every relative that I am aware of for any clues. A monumental task, but I am making headway. I also found talking to older relatives helpful.......they have more info than they realize. Also, if there are others buried in the same plot as your relatives....search them out as well in the cemetery records. Ancestry.ca has a gold mine of Quebec records right now....worth the small fee. Author: EddieKelso Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.tyr.general/6703.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jill, I don't have a copy of the 1st list of Pres. ministers (Fasti), but I think it contains the abbreviations you want. The Pres. Historical Society should be able to help. At a guess, ACB is ? College Belfast, RUI is ? University of Ireland. However BA is his Bachelor of Arts degree from the university. I'm not sure what the various steps were to being qualified to be a minister - again the PHS should be able to help. As you have a definite dob for John Geo., you can get a copy of his birth registration from the General Registrar's Office in Ireland - just Google GRO Ireland - as you only want a photocopy of the birth, not a full certificate, it should cost about 4 Euros. This will give the place where he was born, the name & address (townland name if in a rural area) & mother's maiden name. I would have checked this for you at my local LDS, but they are closed for about 18 months due to renovation work! Marriage certs. in Ireland give names of groom & bride, age (usually states "full age" - over 21), marital status (bachelor/spinster etc), where they lived immediately before marriage, & names & occupations of both fathers. The ceremony usually, although not always, took place in the bride's church. This means that the records of that church can be checked for baptism & marriage records for her family. I think Samuel, whose details I sent you may not be John's brother, but I can't be sure. The Pres. Fasti normally records if a minister was the father/brother/son of another minister. Unfortunately Samuel's record does not have his dob, so it will be difficult to check whether he is John Geo.'s brother. Do you have a record of which church John belonged to? A lot of church records in Northern Ireland are held on microfilm in the Public Records Office in Belfast. I will be spending a lot of time there in the New Year, when I retire! I am happy to check for you if you need any look-ups. If there is anything else I can help with, just let me know. My ggf (his brother) was schoolmaster in Penang, his degree is MA and BA (RUI). Bachelor and Master of Arts? Had no idea about RUI. Samuel John HAMILTON, I'm not 100% sure about. I don't know if my family was in Down, always heard Armagh/Tyrone. And I understood he went to US and had four boys (one died). I haven't found his or one of his sister's birth records although there's a boy's NR which may be him. This record you sent doesn't have a birthdate that I can make out? I had found a Ship Llst to NY with wife Adeline, wondered about it. Asked my dad shortly before he died but don't recall the answer, seems to me he thought it was something else, maybe Alice. Are Adeline and Alice interchangeable but that should show up in the record you sent, right? Don't know father John's birthdate /place/wife's name to access other records. Does actual marriage cert give mother's names, the ones from Armagh Ancestry don't. John was schoolmaster at National School in Milford, Armagh, listed in Slaters Directory. There's also a John HAMILTON as Sub-Post Master, not sure if same or different people. It is helpful that a lot of the family has tone or two middle names. I will contact Queens University and see if they have any info that can help. Hopefully the Presbyterian Society will give me some information. Thanks agian for all your help.... There is another Saml John H. listed, but he is the son of Mark Hamilton, Ballykeel, Dromore. The Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast no longer provide family history information, but as your enquiry is about ministers they may be able to help. My ggf's brother, John George HAMILTON, was the reverend there at the time of his death. 4 Nov 1925. He had been Reverend there twice, the last time for 14 years. I would like to contact them to get information and pictures, if possible, both of him and his grave marker. His younger brother, Samuel HAMILTON was also a minister but I don't know where, at some point he immigrated to the US. Rev John George's wife, Sia Marion Nicholson HAMILTON may also be buried there, I don't know when she died. They had one son that I know of. Alan Livingston HAMILTON, b 1900, Liverpool, England He attended Campbell College in Belfast in 1917. Any info/suggestions would be greaatly appreciated.
