I have only reached a brick wall in regard to the Rankin family prior to that time but just know that our family stories relate to their origin in Scotland but don't know when they came to Ireland, from where in Scotland nor where they arrived in Ireland. Thanks to several genealogy boards, within the past 9 months a distant cousin contacted me from England and from there I have found other Rankin cousins in Kenya and France as well. Though it's a long story, the cousin in England has a mother who is 84 yrs old and she had been looking for family members in America for many years and is relieved to have found my family. We email and send pictures and will meet at some time. This was a primary reason for conducting family research. If anyone can provide any additional information regarding our family and related names, I would greatly appreciate it. Her father was John McLelland, born 6 Feb 1905 at 33 Raise Street, Saltcoats. His father was William Jamesw McLelland, married 16 Mar 1894 in Beith to Catherine Hart (his second marriage I think), died 13 Dec 1837 at 1 Esplanade Cottages, Saltcoats. I did not realise that my father in law had so many brothers. I only knew of George and William. (He lived in McKillop Place if I remember right.) My FIL never talked to me of his relatives and I was not interested in family history then so I have very little information about his relatives. I have no knowledge of Ellen Young, Presumably she is one of your relatives. Many thanks for the information you have given me. I am quite happy to share what I have, including sources. Robert was originally from Germany and settled from what Ive been told in Belfast where he married before 1897. His wife's last name was Costely or Costello, spellings or Robert's last name have also been a problem as it could be Boles or any other variation. If anyone can help with this it would be a wonderful Christmas gift, as I have been searching these names for a couple years now.
