Interesting. I've heard of this before. A great many of he Scottish lowlanders from the southwest of Scotland were involved with the East India Company and sailed on ships called naturally enough the 'East Indiamen". These merchant ships which when they were painted were made to look like a standard British Frigate. Anyhow, a large number of these Scots from the Campbells on down were lonely out "east" and "married" a large number of Chinese-Oriental women from the ports. Many of these women were brought back to Scotland. There are a large number of Chinese in both Scotland and Ireland and no doubt the Mongolian eyes will become common place. The Russians also carried out mt-DNA studies and found that the Finns have much in common with this type of ancestry as well as a large number of Vikings who returned to Sweden [Varangians] from their postings in and along the southern Volga and especially their days in Constantinople. Ron You might find this website helpful on the Scots in Ulster: www.ancestryireland.com/scotsinulster Hamiltons from Paisley in Scotland were given land grants in Co Tyrone. I think there was also Hamilton land in Co Down but cant remember if it was the same family. I think you might find the info on the above site, as well as other information why the Scots went to Ulster, many migrating onwards from there. Theresa
In truth, the Scottish Clearnaces, for which Ireland was mere stop over for the vast majority involved both the Highlanders and the Lowerlanders. The Lowlanders were for the most part herders and sod-workers and kelp harvesters. The Highlanders were from the Warrior Class and their women folk did all the heavy hauling. I believe that is still true today. The Scots knew very little if anything about farming in the olde country, that was a skill they picked up in the "new world" whether they wanted to or not. A great many were very good at it, but what they were really good at was fighting in their various hired out regiments. And damn good they were. The Irish joined the Union Army straight off the immigrant ships and later helped kill off the Plains Indians. While the Scots collected Kelp the Irish grew and collected flax and beat it into linen. The linen provided shirts and undergarments and the kelp provided the alcaline for leather factories. After the final stages of the war of 1812, practically everyone was out of work, then they all came over here. We love them one and all. Canada will take another million. Very interesting Eric, Our G-G-Grandfather, born around 1800, went to Ireland, and married an Irish woman. We do not know their given names. Since his surname is HAMILTON, was he sent to work on one of the Plantations? Our G-Grandfather John (William) was born in 1825 in "Northern Ireland" per the 1900 US census. He emigrated to America in 1840, which would make him 15 years old. What would make such a young person leave home. We do not know if he came with other family or friends. Have not been able to find him on a Ship Passenger List. He married in Wisconsin in 1858. We don't know where he was during those 18 or so years prier . Searching for HAMILTON in County Tyrone produced 209 hits. Having gone through 160, so far, has produced nothing concrete. But we keep searching. There are other Counties where there are found also. Interesting stuff. Most [read practically all] of the Scots being sent to Ulster Ireland were driven off "their" lands by "their" Lairds to raise sheep. The expulsions were far more severe than anything ever experienced in Ireland. Most of the Scots were from the west half of Scotland which meant that they were Argyle Scots [read ex-Irish] so that it was a home coming of sorts. For many of them though, within years they just kept on going and went to North America, Australia and good'ol New Zealand. From 1798 to 1918 over 350,000 came to Canada from Scotland and in some cases whole Clans packed up and left. Of the Scots that were shipped to Ireland, half of them came to Canada. And God bless each and every one of them, for it was the Scots who built Canada.
