Peter Before 1850 weaving was mainly a cottage industry in County Down. Then with the introduction of factory machinery things changed overnight. A factory loom could do the work of 200 hand looms. This was just one factor in mass emigration. During this period all land in this region was owned by major landlords with tenants paying them rents. Registers, details of leases and correspondence have survived in landlord estate papers. This is where you may find much on the family you seek. In a letter dated around 1920, a Cornelius McGuiness, who was a direct descendant of Bernard. claimed to be the last of the clan. Cornelius was a character and is remembered by some old folk. -----Original Message----- From: nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter McGuinness Sent: Saturday, December 29, 2007 2:45 AM To: nir-down@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] McGuinness search Thanks to everyone for this info: I have some more information, but not much, about Bernard and Rose. Bernard was a linen weaver (as recorded on the wedding cert. of John) and had died, probably in Ireland, before 1888. Rose was born in 1831 and died in England. I am afraid I really don't know where they came from, other than that it was definitely Co Down. Since John married a Devlin from Newry it is possible that the families knew each other before they travelled but that is pure conjecture. Can someone tell me a little more about the sources you have quoted? The Griffiths valuation is described as being taken over a number of years. Is it possible to tell when a certain record was made, and also what was the basis for making a record, property ownership? tax liability? Would a working man like a linen weaver with possibly no assets have been recorded? The family was catholic, so if I wanted to follow up one of these leads you have given me, is it possible to access catholic BMD records online, or even in person?
