I've paused in my search for my own family from County Down and am looking for my husband's birth mother. All I have on her is her name and that she was 19 years old when my husband was born in July of 1958. On his birth certificate it has her name as Joan Rebecca Lattie and that she was born in Texas (no county or city). I've tried getting a birth certificate for her from Texas and their vital statistics bureau cannot find a birth for her in any county or city in Texas. I don't know if she is dead or got married several times and has a different last name. I've tried every avenue I can find including finding other "Latties" and asking them. Does anyone out there have an idea where I could/should be looking. Hopefully one of you will inspire my brain of another avenue that I can look to see if I can find her. The name Lattie has many different spelling variations such as: Latta, Latty, Laity, Latey, Lattee, Lattin and Latia. One origin of the name is Ayrshire in Scotland where there is a place called Laithis. Others come from Cumberland. Originally the name is said to have been Norse from hlatha meaning a barn. The name is rare in Ireland the nearest I have come across was J.Lattin, Tailor in Belfast in 1843. James Latta was a Scotch-Irish Presbyterian minister in the second Presbytery in Philadelphia in 1766. It is possible on the birth certificate the name was spelled slightly differently. There were early Lattas who settled in South Carolina around 1720 and a James Latta was listed at Deep Run, Bucks County, Pa. in 1726. I come from County Down but don't recall coming across the name Lattie. I believe some are found around Aberdeen in Scotland. ----- Original Message ----- From: <KPagape@aol.com> To: <nir-down@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2007 3:42 PM Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] I need to pick your brains=off topic > I've paused in my search for my own family from County Down and am looking > for my husband's birth mother. I was also adopted and my Mom helped have my records opened for me when I was 30. It is an exciting adventure! Do you know if Lattie was a maiden name or a married name? Then, there is always the possibility that she did not use her real name. In what county was your husband born? Have you tried some of the adoptive search sites that are now available. I have been reading about them - perhaps they can help. At any rate - please let me know if I can be of any help! Cyndi's List has an entire section on Adoption, although I suspect it's geared toward US research. http://www.cyndislist.com/adoption.htm Diane Hettrick, dhettrick@earthlink.net Seattle Washington USA On Dec 4, 2007, at 3:42 PM, KPagape@aol.com wrote: > I've paused in my search for my own family from County Down and am > looking > for my husband's birth mother. Hi Kathy Texas is a big state but I don't think that Co Down is in east Texas. ...Just kidding. There is an online database of Texas births 1903-1997. I don't see a "Lattie" born 1958 or a mother listed as Lattie 1958. Could be a transcription error. Are the names written or typed ? Did they have typewriters in Texas in 1958 ? ...Just kidding. Contact me off list and maybe I can can help. What does your husband's birth cert show for his birth name ? What date in July 1958. Father listed ? Where was he born ?
