I read with interest the submission by Hugh McCartney and Nicola Jennings with regards to the CARR and ROWAN names, my great great Grandmother Jane McCulloch was born 1855 in Kirkmaiden by Drummore in Wigtonshire,Scotland... almost directly across the water from the Newonards Penninsula of Co. Down. Her parents were William MCCULLOCH (McCULLAGH) and MARY CARR who were from Ballywalter and Kirkcubbin respectively ... details obtained re this marriage are Marriage in Newtownards Registry Officer - 30 Oct 1847: William McCullagh, full age, bachelor from Ballywalter, labourer (father William, labourer) to Mary Kerr, full age, spinster from Ballywalter (father John, farmer). Witnesses: Ann Kerr and James Fisher. Interestingly her full name as per the Scottish birth certificate is JANE ROAN MCCULLOCH. Is it fair to assume this was a simple acknowledgment of the Irish patriot ...
Rowan was a common first name meaning rowan tree (mountain ash). Roan in Ireland is a variant spelling for Rowan. The English name Roan is derived from the French town, Rouen. Rowan is sometimes spelled Ruane or Rohan. In Ireland one finds the surname Rowantree/Roantree/Rowntree in Cavan and Armagh. The name is recorded in Ireland as early as 1376. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Family History" <scullionhistory@blueyonder.co.uk> To: <NIR-DOWN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 28, 2008 9:04 AM Subject: [NIR-DOWN] Re- CARR and ROWAN (ROAN) >I read with interest the submission by Hugh McCartney and Nicola > Jennings with regards to the CARR and ROWAN names, my great great > Grandmother Jane McCulloch was born 1855 in Kirkmaiden by Drummore in > Wigtonshire,Scotland... almost directly across the water from the > Newonards Penninsula of Co.
