    1. [NIR-DOWN] O'HAGAN

    3. The name O'HAGAN is constantly turning up as I research my JENNINGS family in Newry and I do not know any reason for this. It seems that there must be a connection somewhere that I have failed to find. I know that Arthur O'HAGAN (d.1800) lived on North Street, Newry, as did my Andrew JENNINGS (d.1818)but this doesn't seem to be reason enough for the number of times I have come across baptisms with either O'HAGAN sponsors or vice versa. It it possible that they are connected in some way by marriage and I have failed to find the record? Both families married into the McCARTAN family, but again this does not seem to be a very strong connection. Charles Jennings (b.1837) a grandson of Andrew was apprenticed to Arthur O'HAGAN solicitor in Dublin so the connection still continued in later generations. If anyone is researching the O'HAGAN family could they tell me if they have come across the name JENNINGS, please? I suppose this is a sort of brickwall. Nicola Jennings

    1. [NIR-DOWN] Archibald H. R. CARR (Killyleagh) 1864

    3. Is any one researching the name CARR who could perhaps shed some light on this particular CARR? He is in Griffiths, Archibald H.R CARR, leasing his property from Catherine A. HAMILTON in the townland of Corporation, parish of Killyleagh, Barony of Dufferin, County of Down. My guess is he was called after Archibald Hamilton Rowan (United Irishmen) and that Catherine Hamilton may have been Catherine Cockburn married to one of the Hamilton family. But who is Archibald H.R.CARR? And what is his connection,if any, with the HAMILTON'S? I suspect there is one, because one of Harriet Hamilton's sons, grandson of Archibald Hamilton Rowan, was christened Henry CARR Fitzgerald. (Harriet was my gggrandmother. Any suggestions? 3. The story of the Hamiltons of Killyleagh is rather tangled. Your Archibald Hamilton Rowan Carr was likely named after the famous Irish patriot but it is unclear if he was related to the Hamiltons of Killyleagh Castle. The patriot was the son of Gawin Hamilton who came from a famous Scottish family. Rowan was the name of his paternal grandfather, Sir James Hamilton, Viscount Clandeboye. Archibald Hamilton Rowan Carr was listed as a farmer at The Course, Killyleagh and listed on a railway prospectus in 1861.. Thomas Ringland born Feb.4 1815 married Christian Carr b. July 19 1817. He died Sept 30, 1872 and she d. Feb. 6 1890. Arhibald Hamilton Rowan Carr and James Carr, Bank Manager of Belfast by their oaths proves the will of Thomas Ringland in 1872 and reproved in 1873. Thomas Ringland, who originally was from Killyleagh, born Feb.4 1815, was a bank director in Carrickfegus and died in Liverpool. His widow Christian, lived at Cultra, Holwood and her will was proved by James Carr of Belfast, bank director, and William Ringland, bank clerk of Larne, Co. Antrim. The Ringlands were an old Killyleagh family and some were farmers, surgeons and businessmen. James Ringland of Toy was possibly a friend of the Carr family both being farmers. There are several Carr gravestones in Killyleagh Presbyterian graveyard. The earliest if for Nataneal Carr of Maymore d. Dec. 1832 aged 54. Widow Catherine (LOWRY) d. Nov 1874. John Carr Esq. d. Dec. 1865 aged 47. ( He had a flax spinning factory) His wife Eliza d. Dec. 1895. There was also a Joseph Carr of Cocean who d. Nov 11 1911. Also his widow Eliza who d. 1895 in Queen's Elms, Belfast. Her daughter Johnena, spinster, was sole executrix. James Carr of Belfast, born Killyleagh, b. June 1829 d. Belfast Sept. 1916. Widow, Frances MULLOCK, d. Aug.1903. The 1843 Commercial Directory for Killyleagh does not list any Carrs and presumably they were still farmers. Andrew Ringland is listed as a Butter and Grain Merchant . Dawson Rowan Hamilton is listed at Killyleagh Castle and T.K. Lowry is a Barrister-at law of Ballytrim House. The 1886 Killyleagh Directory listed Joseph Carr, Corporation, S.B. Ringland at Ballytrim House, Killyleagh, and John Ringland at Cluntagh. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darcy5" <darcy5@eircom.net> To: <nir-down@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 27, 2008 7:27 AM Subject: [NIR-DOWN] Archibald H.
