photocopies are fine for genealogy but if you need one for legal purposes such as getting a passport or estate needs you must have it certified. I like to have photocopy rather than transcribed content because I have concrete evidence that there is nothing more available. However, if you have trouble with the script it can be helpful to have a transcription by someone who has done a lot of research in an area and knows the names, handwriting of clergy etc. At times it is a little like trying to interpret a doctors writing.
