Hi listers, Me again chasing that McKee mob. Since my earlier request new information has come to light that may assist my search. Below are my questions:- William McKee of Ballyholme, and wife Elizabeth Little had at least two sons who migrated to Victoria Australia, these were James McKee who came here in 1859 and brother William McKee who arrived in 1873. James married Margaret Shaw here in Victoria but they had a daughter they left behind in Ireland probably because she was too young for the long voyage, her name is Agnes McKee she was born 11 Feb 1860. Agnes came here later when she was about three years old with an Aunty, her mother's sister, Jane Shaw. I have two questions here (1) can some kind person tell me if William and Elizabeth McKee had more children in addition to James and William, if so who are they....and (2)is it possible that James and Margaret were married in Ireland before Agnes's birth, would there be a record. Margaret and Jane Shaws' parents were James Shaw, brickmaker, gardener, labourer of Ballymaconnell and Margaret Wilson. Apart from their two children Margaret and Jane there was at least another child named Roseann who married ?....? Hawthorn. Can anyone assist me with more information about Roseann i.e. what was the christian name of her husband, when were they married etc. Any help and/or information will be greatly appreciated. Best wishes from Melbourne, James.
James Did Margaret Shaw go back to Ireland to have birth in 1860? So how sure are you of the James McKee can in 1859? These dates do not seem to ring true to an out sider!! G'day Mike, The dates are certainly legitimate James came to Australia first on the ship "David C Fleming" sailed from Liverpool 21st July 1859 arrived Port Melbourne 5th Nov 1859. Margaret followed later on the ship "Marco Polo" sailed Liverpool 11th Dec 1861 arrived Melbourne 10th March 1962. Their first daughter Agnes was born in County Down on 11th Feb 1860 so it seems logical that Margaret waited home in Ireland for the birth of Agnes then remained with her baby for nine months and then set off to join her husband. My suspicion is that James and Margaret were possibly not married when Agnes was born, but I might be too suspicious, perhaps they were married in Ireland and married again here in Victoria...but that idea does not hold much support, I mean why would they marry twice ? No Margaret did not return to Ireland to have her baby daughter and the shipping manifest shows only James by himself on board "David C Fleming". It is not surprising that the arrival of baby Agnes was put off until she was a little older and stronger, that was not an uncommon thing with Irish immigrants who came her in those years of mass migration, I know of several instances where it occurred. I hope this information helps Mike, thanks for your interest, regards, James. -----Original Message----- From: nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Mike Boyd Sent: 22 January 2008 23:23 To: nir-down@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] McKee Mob James Did Margaret Shaw go back to Ireland to have birth in 1860?
