Ann Take a look at the following - it gives ALL the property held by the Downshire Estates. _http://www.proni.gov.uk/introduction_downshire.pdf_ (http://www.proni.gov.uk/introduction_downshire.pdf) Sheila
Was Castlereagh part of these estates? I know its within the Belfast City limits today but 150 years ago I beleive Castlereagh was in one of Holywoods townlands but not sure which one. Does any one recall where the Castlereagh estates were located? Thankyou very much for the URL to the estates of the Marquess of Downshire. He certainly had a lot of land. I was particularly interested to note that there was mining at Carrickfergus. My HARPER ancestors were recruited to work in the Marquess of Londonderry's coal mines in NE England so it is possible they came from the Carrickfergus region. I will pursue that idea! I looked for Harpers in the Carrickfergus gravestone records and found none. ----- Original Message ----- From: <annathamble@aol.com> To: <nir-down@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 16, 2008 8:55 AM Subject: Re: [NIR-DOWN] Marquess of Downshire's estate > Thankyou very much for the URL to the estates of the Marquess of > Downshire.
