Lester Youn will need to go to PRONI (66 Balmoral Street) - it is in the south area of Belfast access by train or bus. You will need to look at both the Card Index and the online Index. (Online you should look at now, but that does not have as much items as the old card index. So when you arrive you will need to have an number of items to place orders for. They take more than an hour to get. Thursday night it stays open until 8.45 pm I think. So allow 2 or 3 days for PRONI alone. (Email is proni@dcalni.gov.uk) Then you have Linenhall Library on the north side of the City Square I assume that you will also need to check out the General Register Office (sorry do not have an address) City Hall may also be able to give you Cemetery records You may also know which church they went to as well for any records there. There should be an family history group in Belfast that you try to find before you go. These are some of the places you need to go to. Public transport is quite OK. Mostly buses but you can use the Trains as well. There is an tourist Office opposite the City Hall. If you can find them on the web, you should make you booking soon as if you are going during the summer. Last September I stayed at a B&B hotel near Queens University for about 45 pound a night but you may wish to say out of the city along one of the three main railway lines, to Bangor, Lisburn or Carrickfergus which should be cheaper but you lose time travelling - depending on the distance you are out. Mike Boyd Brisbane PS write out your family tree and list the things you wish to find or are looking for. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lester C Griel III" <lcg112@gmail.com> To: <nir-down@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 11, 2008 8:50 AM Subject: [NIR-DOWN] Going to Ireland Hello all, My mother surprised me the other day with an invitation to accompany her to Ireland (her father was born in Belfast). Can anyone suggest possibilities for research while I am in Belfast. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Lester Lester C Griel III BS, RN
Thanks to all who gave me advice on my upcoming trip to Ireland in May. I'll post to the list with how I did when I return. I am very excited to go. There are two great uncles of mine who I will be meeting for the first time that are both in failing health so I am particularly looking forward to meeting them and listening to their stories.
