    3. Lurganconary is less than one mile from Ballyardle and is adjacent to Cranfield beach, where Carlingford Lough joins the sea. A Marmion family lived beside the Grange Church in the townland of Lurganconary. -----Original Message----- From: nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of B Marmion Sent: Monday, February 04, 2008 10:01 PM To: NIR-DOWN@rootsweb.com Subject: [NIR-DOWN] Magheralin, County Down Can anyone tell me where this is located, (see below) Outside of Warrenpoint? Outside of Kilkeel...on the Lurgan Rd?...which would it be closest to- Lurganconary, Lurganreagh, or Ballyardel. Wouldn't the marriage place be close to the couples home? 3. Hi Sean, Thank you, yes, the link Judy sent me yesterday to the maps made me realize that in order to see all of the old ancestors neighborhood, you had to go to Google UK maps, the one here will not allow you to see it...it's all fuzzy...and when I did I saw the whole area close up for the first time and I can see how they were able to conduct the smuggling operation, they would undoubtedly pull into that cove area in Cranfield beach, then they had a short distance to go up to Lurganconary and Ballyardel...the roads have these names! I was hoping that the location of Magheralin would tell me who's daughter Jane Marmion was...but not so lucky there. Have you run across any information on the smuggling operations that involved many folks in the area? Did the liquor come from France, or made in Ireland? What did they do with it? Sell it locally? I imagine the authorities couldn't tell it apart from the legally imported stuff once it got into the marketplace. I understand it was Alex Chesney that was there to keep watch and make sure it didn't happen, which would have been difficult since he lived in the neighborhood and was looking for a promotion. It is looking like the Marmions remained in this business when they came to New Orleans, though probably (not smuggling) just importing, so the source may have been the same. It looks so large, involving many members of the Marmion family all over the US, perhaps even Canada, all involved....until the 1890's and prohabition began. Thanks again!
