David In reply - as best as I can:- If you request a register - the staff member will bring it and shows you that entry only. Digital cameras are NOT permitted. If you request several registers - they are all brought at the same time. I requested 4 registers and went for lunch - they were all there when I came back. I imagine that if you require 10 registers.for example, they will bring them all at the same time. I can not remember the exact cost of a photocopy - a friend of mine says it is 99 pence- he is going in the next few days and is going to ask. I will try and post the answer. It think the district registry is given in the index. I don't know how much District Offices charge - and there is postage as well. As far as how many you will see in 5 hours will depend on how quickly you identify which registers you want from the index. With 2 of you working for 2 days I suppose you might see 30 registers - how many do you think you'll need? I hope this is of some help. Mike PS - why don't you email them and ask? dmmon.messageboards@ntlworld.com wrote: On Tue, 12 Feb 2008 23:05:21 +0000 (GMT), you wrote: >To all who may be interested in visiting the GRONI. > The address and phone number as well as website are as in Ella Patterson's recent email . > Having recently visited the office - a few tips:- > Do not go without a previous appointment - they are quite often booked up. Does the staff member stands beside you while you write down what information from the registration that you want? How long does it usually take for the registration to be brought to you? I understand that with this information one can get the registration from the local Registry Office. Do the indexes tell you what Registry Office hold the record? I ask this because we have a LOT to look up. I was wondering if, after seeing the first 4 records it might be better to just get the details from the indexes as necessary, then later when back home, apply for an extract of the registrations from the local Registry office. I believe these also cost £2.50. Is there anyone on the County Down list who has access to the County Down Old Parish Records and could do a lookup for me please. Thank you Gail

With 2 of you working for 2 days I suppose you might see 30 registers - how many do you think you'll need? Well, just looking at the descendants who remained in NI from one set of my great grandparents there are over 50 names that need a birth, or a death or a marriage or a combination of up to all looking for. For the other set of great grandparents there are only a few because I don't know of any descendants remaining there. I was also hoping to take the lines a bit further back than I currently have. In addition one of them was a Brontë so I have about another 50 names of them in the Brontë line to look at as well. >I hope this is of some help. > Mike > PS - why don't you email them and ask? I did email them once before about some of the questions that I have been asking but felt that I didn't get them answered very well. Perhaps I wasn't specific enough. I am sure that their web site has been written by someone who knows all about it but I bet they have never tested it out with people who are novices & then checked their understanding of the services the GRONI offer. The very same applies to the National Archives, Kew. Try following the step by step instructions in some of their How to .... leaflets & you get nowhere. The proof of this is the number of visitors you see seeking assistance while actually holding the How to ... leaflet in their hand and having to ask questions about it. When I was there earlier this week, in the light of my experience, I was tempted to offer to rewrite the one that I was trying to follow. David
David, Just to add to what is given below - your first port of call at GRONI is a receptionist, who will take your fee & will ask you to wait. A member of staff will bring you to the search room in the 1st floor, where you will be shown how to use the computer to access BMD indexes. GRONI do not hold originals of Marriage Registrations - these are held locally in the relevant registration office, which is in the office building within one of the local Councils (there are currently 26 councils in Northern Ireland). As a result, the computerised record of marriages is different from those for births & deaths. You can search by surname from 1845 up to c. 2001 - you will get a list giving: Date of marriage Names of Husband & Wife Where married (usually a church - you can see most church records, including marriage registrations, in PRONI's microfilms) Searching births & deaths by surname takes a lot longer, so give yourself plenty of time - these are PDF documents for each year from 1864. To see the registration, you will be given an A4 form to complete & you copy surname, first name & Vol. & Page No. unto the sheet. If you give the sheet to one of the staff, they will bring you the relevant register & will read it out to you, giving you time to write down the details. The 1st 4 of these are free, if you want any more you have to pay £2.50 each. GRONI only supply certified copies of registrations, whereas the GRO in Roscommon in the Republic of Ireland supply photocopies of registration entries for family history research purposes. I would recommend that if you have time you should visit the LDS Family History Centre, Holywood Road, Belfast. It is open to the public from 9.30am - 4pm Wed & Thur, & 9.30am - 1.30pm Sat. They have microfilms of the BMD indexes for Ireland up to 1959, plus copies of birth regs. 1864 - 1880 & 1900 -1913, marriage regs. 1845 - 1870 & death regs 1864 - 1870 & (NI only) 1922 - 1931. They may allow you to take digital photos - just ask! The FHS has the facility where you can order photocopies of registrations from GRO in Ireland - ask for a form. Each p/copy costs £4 & they will be posted to your home address - I think postage is free, but ask just in case! Hope this is useful Eddie (Note to Administrator - I had to use email below as I wanted to expand on info already given - thanks!)
