His father (Robert) was born inCounty Downs, Ireland, in 1799; married Sarah Ewart, who was born in the same county about 1797; she died in 1876, and was followed by her husband in July, 1877. Hugh crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1864, and, landing in New York City, proceeded to Rock Island county, Illinois, where he was hired by a farmer for five years. He then moved to Iowa, and rented for the next five years, a farm from Mr. John McLain, of Scott township. He then moved to and finished improving his present place, which he had bought in the winter of 1866. He married in Rock Island county, Illinois, February 4, 1869, to Margaret Hamilton, who was born in County Downs, Ireland, October 10, 1839. The births resulting from this union have been as follows: Robert (born March 31, 1871), Wm. John (born October 18, 1873), Hugh (born December 10, 1875), Nancy Jane (born December 1, 1877) and an infant, deceased. Mr. Bowden owns about thirty acres of good land, well stocked and free from debt.
