Can someone tell me where/how to locate foreign wills--ideally an online index? My ancestor, George CUMMIN(G)S, born about 1770 in NC, but resided somewhere in either SC or GA when, about 1790, he inherited land in County Down, Ireland, and removed there to live, attend college and have his children. The name of his Irish-born wife is unknown. It is conceivable that he married in the US and that the Irish land was inherited this through his wife, but I doubt this as I don't believe he was married yet (under 24 years of age) when he inherited the land, and additionally, his wife was born in Ireland. I've hit a brick-wall in being able to learn anything more about George's parents, his wife or where he lived in the South. It would seem more logical that George inherited this land from a parent, who would have lived in the South at the time of death. There must be a foreign will somewhere for the period of about 1790, but I can't seem to discover where to look and how--in the US or in N. Ireland, etc.? I've checked the County Down wills and probate--their indexes survived the fire of 1920, but don't list George Cummin(g)s. The deceased may have been a relative living in County Down or an American (from SC or GA???) who owned the land in County Down. When the deceased's will was probated and this land 'distributed' to George--and the name transferred on the deed--the will or probate must have gone through civil probate records at either end, certainly? I would deeply appreciate any assistance in knowing how to go about searching for such a foreign will, and if anyone knows of any websites which might pertain to this? A last thought is that I'm aware that LEASED land in N. Ireland, could be handed down to heirs for several generations, so it's occured to me that this could be leased land, rather than owned land. Thank you, Carol (Ashby) Brees
