    3. Brooklyn Eagle Monday Feb 8 1886 page 4 END OF A PROMISING CAREER The Death in Mexico of a Clergyman Well Known in Brooklyn News was received this morning from the City of Mexico of the death of REV FATHER JOHN MCCANN, who was formerly connected with the Diocese of Brooklyn and who was well known in this city, where a great number of his friends reside. Death is supposed to have been caused by apoplexy. Father McCann, who was only 25 years of age, was a native of County Down, Ireland, where his parents were people of wealth. He studed in Paris, finishing his education at Niagara College. In the City of Mexico, where he had ministered for the past three years, Father McCann was pastor of the only English speaking congregation of Roman Catholics. He was the first pastor of this church, and it grew under his hands in a manner which attested his ability, energy, and earnestness. He was a highly finished orator and an accomplished linguist, and it will be very hard indeed, so his congregation think, to fill his place. The news of his demise, which was received by letter, caused profound regret among the numerous Brooklyn Friends of Father McCann, the blow striking with great weight upon those who knew him best. Among these were Revs William J. Lane, E. J. O"Reilly, Peter McGuire, Edward Gannon, M.J. Naughton, L.J. Guerin, M.J. Downd and J. A. Brossnian. The Rev William J. Lane is arranging with friends and classmates to celebrate a requiem mass for the repose of the soul of the deceased at an early date. Due notice will be given.
