Irish Times Apr 12 1902 A fatality occured at noon on Thursday at the Belfast City Hall, in course of erection, at the head of Donegall place, a carpenter named DANIEL M'CARTAN losing his life in a shocking manner. M'CARTAN fell a distance of fifty feet, and was killed on the spot. His remains were removed in the ambulance to the Royal Hospital. the deceased was 28 years of age, and belonged to Tullymore, near Castlewellan. Notes: I believe this Daniel McCartan was the son of Edward McCartan and Catherine Gribben and was living with his sister Mary at Tullymore in the 1901 census. Ann McCartan age 89, a grocer in the 1911 Tullymore census is likely Daniel's aunt, and the probably the one who erected the family tombstone--below. Additional Notes Research notes from Deirdre McEvoy on this Tollymore McCartan family burials (Bryansford Cemetery) Erected by Ann McCartan of Tollymore In memory of her beloved sister Bertha Mary who died 28 Sept 1831, aged 63 years And her mother Mary who died 22 Mar 1857, aged 60 years Also her brother Edward who died 13 Feb 1874 aged 43 years Also his son Daniel who died 3 April 1902, aged 29 years Also Daniel McCartan, Castlewellan who died 1 Feb 1961 aged 58 years Margaret Ann Campbell who died 21 November 1967 May Campbell who died 18 July 1999 aged 79 years This family may be connected to the Edward McCartan, Carpenter, who lived in Castlwellan and who had a daughter called Bertha. I believe his son is the Daniel who died in 1961. Margaret Ann Campbell could be his daughter Margaret Ann who was born in 1893. There appears to be a mistake with Bertha's age, it was most likely 3 years rather than 63 years, other wise the mother Mary was younger than her daughter Bertha! Follow-up research Oct 2010 NanB Deirdre is correct. The Edward McCartan, Carpenter of Castlewellan, is the Deceased Daniel's brother, and another son of Edward McCartan and Catherine Gribben of Tullymore/ Tollymore. Irish Civil Registration has the birth of a Bertha Elizabeth McCartan in 1894 and a marriage in 1918, likely the same person, and likely the daughter of Edward McCartan, Castlewellan.
