    3. CHicago Tribune May 10 1873 Mr John Reid, the senior partner of the firm of Reid and Sherwin, the well-known proprietors of the great slaughtering and packing establishment on Archer avenue, died suddenly yesterday morning at 5 o'clock, at this residence on West Taylor Street. He had been in poor health for some time past, but not to a degree which alarmed his friends. On Wednesday he was suddenly seized with a congestive chill, which resulted in his death. Mr Reid was born in Newry Co Down, Ireland, emigrating to America about 15 years ago. In conjunction with his partner, Mr Sherwin, he had contributed largely to the development and growth of one of the most important interests in Chicago, and at the time of his death was at the head of one of the largest and best conducted establishments of the kind in the world. His death will be sincerely mourned not only by the hundreds of employees connected with the business, but by an extended circle of friends, by whom he was held in the highest esteem. He leaves a wife and several children in comfortable circumstances.
