    1. [NIR-DOWN] The Old Man of Scarva 1898 Robert Taylor
    2. Nan Brennan
    3. Irish World Aug 20 1898 ROBERT TAYLOR, postmaster of Scarva, popularly known as "the old man of Scarva," died lately. Taylor's age is problematical, the most modest estimate putting it at 119 years, while others, apparently as well founded, to to show that he was upward of 130. This is by far the greatest record, and with Taylor's death, there parses away the most remarkable instance of longevity in this century. Up till the last deceased maintained wonderful vitality. He held the postmastership of Scarva to the last, and though naturally frail, was this Spring in good health and spirits.

    3. Hi Nan On further research, the dead man's name was actually John McAdarra, he lived in Aughnagun, which is a townland near Mayobridge. He married Margaret Carr on 7 May 1841 in Clonallan parish and had 7 children. 6 of his children ended up in Jarrow, Co Durham but his daughter Catherine stayed behind to look after her parents. She died in 1914 although she is missing from the 1911 census. In the 1901 census, both John and Kate's ages are way off target, he is younger by 12 years and and Kate has wiped 18 years off her age. 3. Irish Times Sep 13 1878 DEATH OF MR JAMES KENNEDY OF BELFAST Mr James Kennedy, J.P. of Rosetta, Belfast, died at his residence at half=past two o'clock yesterday. Mr Kennedy had been in broken health for some time, having suffered from an af- fection of the heart, to which several complications were superadded, and his death was consequently not unexpected. During his long life of 70 years, begun and ended in Belfast, Mr Kennedy had grown into one of its most prominent citizens. Though for some years he had retired from busi- ness, he at one time occupied a position in the commercial world. He will always be remembered in the linen trade as the man who first introduced power-loom weaving into Belfast, and is abilities intelligence and success as a merchant led to his being called to the presidency of the Chamber of Commerce. Owing to a partial deafness from which he suffered, he was indisposed towards taking much part in public affairs, though when occasion demanded he was a forcible and effective speaker. 1. [NIR-DOWN] the Limes County Down--where is it?
    2. Nan Brennan
    3. Follow up IJ: I see there is a reference to it also in Christopher Brennan's Earls Family Chronicles: http://www.dankat.com/earls/chap10.htm > Leita Brown was born in 1910 and married James Carson. They lived at > ``The Limes'', Lough Road, Lurgan. Leita died in 1969. I think if you Google it you will find some more. 3. Hello IJ I haven't found anything on your James Kennedy, however, I found a 1930 Irish Times obit for Lord Rathcreedan, Captain Cecil Norton. He was the 2nd husband of Cecilia Lafayette Kennedy Cavendish. The article says she died in 1898, but had one daughter with Lord Rathcreedan. The obit doesn't mention the daughter's name. I'll try and send the article to you separately. Nan It does mention "The Limes" Co Down. There is a place (comtemporary) in Malone Park, Belfast called The Limes, but I don't know if that has any connection to the place you are looking for. 3. I am trying to find information about a KENNEDY family of Belfast. All the information I have so far is as follows: JAMES KENNEDY'S fourth daughter MARY O'NEILL KENNEDY married Richard Charles GAINFORT at St. John's Church, Laganbank, Belfast on Feb 22nd 1865 and James' occupation was given as Warehouseman. Another daughter, CECILIA LAFAYETTE KENNEDY married William Thomas CAVENDISH at the Consul's Office in Leghorn, Italy on May 1st 1873 and James was described as beling a Merchant of The Limes, Co. Down. (This address for that date, has proved impossible to find). He was given as deceased in the 1893 edition of Debrett's but I should have thought he would have warranted a fairly large obituary notice in a local paper, when he died! I am desperate to find out more about the family - who was his Wife, what sort of Merchant was he, who were the other members of his family, etc. etc.! Any information or advice in searching would be very much appreciated. Many thanks. IJ

    3. Thanks, Nan. I had no idea there was an Adelaide Hospital society in Ireland (I've just googled it to check it out) so I'm sure you're right that the person died in one of their hospitals not out here in South Australia in our Royal Adelaide hospital. As my late father said "you learn something new every day".
