Brooklyn Eagle Monday Feb 8 1886 page 4 END OF A PROMISING CAREER The Death in Mexico of a Clergyman Well Known in Brooklyn News was received this morning from the City of Mexico of the death of REV FATHER JOHN MCCANN, who was formerly connected with the Diocese of Brooklyn and who was well known in this city, where a great number of his friends reside. Death is supposed to have been caused by apoplexy. Father McCann, who was only 25 years of age, was a native of County Down, Ireland, where his parents were people of wealth. He studed in Paris, finishing his education at Niagara College. In the City of Mexico, where he had ministered for the past three years, Father McCann was pastor of the only English speaking congregation of Roman Catholics. He was the first pastor of this church, and it grew under his hands in a manner which attested his ability, energy, and earnestness. He was a highly finished orator and an accomplished linguist, and it will be very hard indeed, so his congregation think, to fill his place. The news of his demise, which was received by letter, caused profound regret among the numerous Brooklyn Friends of Father McCann, the blow striking with great weight upon those who knew him best. Among these were Revs William J. Lane, E. J. O"Reilly, Peter McGuire, Edward Gannon, M.J. Naughton, L.J. Guerin, M.J. Downd and J. A. Brossnian. The Rev William J. Lane is arranging with friends and classmates to celebrate a requiem mass for the repose of the soul of the deceased at an early date. Due notice will be given.
News from Ireland Irish World NY May 23, 1896 Death of the REV James Keating-- The Rev James Keating, the venerable pastor of Lower Mourne, died on Monday at his residence, Annalong. County Down. Father Keating was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Down and Connor, having been born in the latter part of the year 1810. He was a native of the diocese of Ferns, and was born in Ballynaciash, parish of Blackwater, County Wexford. Having entered St Kiernan's College, Kilkenny, in 1841, he was, after an edifying student's career, raised to the dignity of priesthood in Maynooth College by the Most Rev Dr Murray, then Archbishop of Dublin. A few months after his ordination he was, on Aug 6, 1847, affliated to the diocese of Down and Connor, and appointed curate of the parish of Kilmore (Crossgar), County Down. On Oct 15, 1856, he was appointed by the Most Rev Dr Denvir to the pastoral charge of the important district of Lower Mourne, in succession to the Very Rev Hugh Connor. For nearly forty years Father Keating worked unostentatiously among his people. He was a man of the people and lived for the people, and has died universally respected by all and beloved by the flock commited to his charge.
News from Ireland Irish World New York 1893 Sept 02 Down JAMES MCKIBBIN, aged 71 years, fell over the Annalong pier one day recently and died soon after from the fracture of the skull.
News from Ulster Irish World NY April 16 1898 DOWN An interesting find was recently made in a garden of William and John Hunter's premises, at Craigacreery Board Mills. A girl, LIZZIE PETTICREW, was digging at the foot of a tree when she unearthed a jug containing 109 rifle bullets each weighing fully 1 1/2 ounces. From their appearance and from the locality in which they were found, there is no doubt that they were intended for duty in the historic period of '98. I think this is near Ballynahinch. I couldn't find it in Ros's site and I can't find seanruad Townland database. Is it gone forever? What a terrible shame if it is.
I am interested in finding out more about this couple: William MOONEY Kilkeel married Anne McCarton 29 Jun 1872 at Lower Mourne Catholic Church, witnesses were Francis & Margaret Pugh The birth of a daughter (no name) was published in the Dublin, Irish times. on 15 April 1878. The paper gave the mother's name as Nancy McCarton Mooney. Does anyone know the parents of either of William Mooney or Nancy/Anne McCarton? Wasn't it unusual for such a birth to be published in the Dublin paper unless it was a prominent familY? I'm wondering if either the husband (Mooney) or the wife (McCarton) was connected to the prominent Mooney-McCartan family of Dublin and if they are, then they are likely connected to a very successful Irish born NY businessman, Patrick O'H MCCartan who erected a grave at Clanvaraghan for his wife Rosa Murray McCartan and her parents. I have been trying for years to determine where P O"H MCC was from and who his parents were. Anyone have anything further on this William Mooney or Nancy/Anne McCarton of Mullartown? Thanks, Nan

Hi: The best way to get location is from the 1911 census you can get farm locations in all the townlands. Dear Listers Can anyone give me a website that has townland maps for parishes in Armagh County and Antrim County? I spent all afternoon hunting for a map of the townlands the parishes below. Links were down, or websites gone or locations that might have had such maps had subscription fees. I expect the same problem with Antrim County townlands. I only need a few border townlands in each county (bordering County Down). I'd be very grateful for a website, or if someone is able to scan such a map and email it to me, I'd be most grateful. These townlands: ARMAGH County: Kellevy, Newry, Ballymore, Kilmore, Seagoe, Shankill and Magheralin. ANTRIM COUNTY: Aghalee - Blaris - Derryaghy - Drumbeg -Lambeg - Magheragal - Mageramesk and the city of Belfast My family is actually from County Down's west side which border the above townlands, so I want to check them out for family strays. I'm researching the CUMMING family from Carryduff in Dumbro county and from Newry, in County Down. I'm researching the GORDON and BOGGS surnames in these parishes of County Down: Tullyish parirsh - Aghaderg parish - Newry parish - Loughinisland parish - Seapatrick parish -and Rathfriland on the border of Drumballyroney parish and Drumgath parish. I DO have maps of these County Down townlands. Thank you for any help Carol
Irish Times Apr 12 1902 A fatality occured at noon on Thursday at the Belfast City Hall, in course of erection, at the head of Donegall place, a carpenter named DANIEL M'CARTAN losing his life in a shocking manner. M'CARTAN fell a distance of fifty feet, and was killed on the spot. His remains were removed in the ambulance to the Royal Hospital. the deceased was 28 years of age, and belonged to Tullymore, near Castlewellan. Notes: I believe this Daniel McCartan was the son of Edward McCartan and Catherine Gribben and was living with his sister Mary at Tullymore in the 1901 census. Ann McCartan age 89, a grocer in the 1911 Tullymore census is likely Daniel's aunt, and the probably the one who erected the family tombstone--below. Additional Notes Research notes from Deirdre McEvoy on this Tollymore McCartan family burials (Bryansford Cemetery) Erected by Ann McCartan of Tollymore In memory of her beloved sister Bertha Mary who died 28 Sept 1831, aged 63 years And her mother Mary who died 22 Mar 1857, aged 60 years Also her brother Edward who died 13 Feb 1874 aged 43 years Also his son Daniel who died 3 April 1902, aged 29 years Also Daniel McCartan, Castlewellan who died 1 Feb 1961 aged 58 years Margaret Ann Campbell who died 21 November 1967 May Campbell who died 18 July 1999 aged 79 years This family may be connected to the Edward McCartan, Carpenter, who lived in Castlwellan and who had a daughter called Bertha. I believe his son is the Daniel who died in 1961. Margaret Ann Campbell could be his daughter Margaret Ann who was born in 1893. There appears to be a mistake with Bertha's age, it was most likely 3 years rather than 63 years, other wise the mother Mary was younger than her daughter Bertha! Follow-up research Oct 2010 NanB Deirdre is correct. The Edward McCartan, Carpenter of Castlewellan, is the Deceased Daniel's brother, and another son of Edward McCartan and Catherine Gribben of Tullymore/ Tollymore. Irish Civil Registration has the birth of a Bertha Elizabeth McCartan in 1894 and a marriage in 1918, likely the same person, and likely the daughter of Edward McCartan, Castlewellan.
The Irish Times Mar 14 1950 Guarded by his collie dog, the body of MR JOHN MCKIBBIN, a 70year old farmer, of MONEYDARGHAMORE, Annalong, Co Down, was found yesterday morning at the doorstep of his home, where he lived alone. The deceased man had visited friends on Sunday night, and it appears that he died as he was entering the house on his return. The body was found by MR ROBERT MCBURNEY, a neighbor, but the dog would not allow anyone to approach, until MR JOHN STEVENSON, a close friend of the deceased man, arrived.
>From Australia Wonder if anyone in Ireland can tell me something about Portavoige. ? Of course I can Google it and get a standard (boring) report). According to an LDS record my great grandfather Robert Ewart was born there in 1830. I presume there is a churchyard. Any comments would be much appreciated. Regards Dale Margaret (nee Ewart)
I leave today for a six week trip to various archives in Ireland and England, so my email reading and responding may be intermittent. To partly fill that gap, I started a blog yesterday in which I will try to record my progress. Some of it will be arcane research gleanings - not for the faint of heart. Other bits may be about places I have stayed and food I have enjoyed - ephemeral stuff. So far, I have only the one post. After all, I just created the blog yesterday. It is very rudimentary since I don't really know what I am doing. You can see it at: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/ Enjoy, Sharon PS - for those who follow my Irish research, I posted a great swat of new material late last night.SEE: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/index.html -- Sharon Oddie Brown Roberts Creek, BC, Canada.
