    1. [NIR-DOWN] Late 1800s - Irish in Hong Kong
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. It cheers me no end to see one of our female ancestors in the late 1800s, skirts billowing in the wind, perched at the nether reaches of the mizzenmast. This is one of several pictures that I have referenced in my latest blog: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2011/02/1898-avast-mast.html These people settled in Hong Kong in the mid-1800s, coming from Co. Armagh, Co. Louth, Co. Monaghan - and elsewhere in Ireland. Enjoy - and if there are others who you can identify - or tell me more about - then, as always, I am all ears. 3.   Karen from Auckland here.   We have not been physically affected in the North Island, but we have family in Christchurch.  Thankfully they are safe, although their house has suffered more damage, but hopefully not to the stage that it will need to be rebuilt.  Our nephew was working repairing one of the high rise bnuildings which had been damaged in a previous quake - he is vowing to never go back to working on another one - he was so scared.   The country has been offered so much help from overseas with search and rescue teams from Australia, England and Japan.   There will be more deaths to be reported as time goes on - this morning's report was that there were bodies lying in the street awaiting collection - the rescuers are working to a plan so that they can identify where people were found.  There are already amazing tales of survival - and people recounting the fear they felt when it happened.   It seems that "down under" over the past six months both New Zealand and Australia has had our share of tragedies.   Karen

    3. Hello to you all from a very sad New Zealand. We live quite a distance away so we have no damage here, but yesterday we just couldn't believe the damaged buildings and loss of life in Christchurch. We know a lot of people there and we have been so anxious for them. Our daughter is on a lecture tour and we were so pleased to hear she had moved on to Dunedin yesterday morning but we think our Doctor was staying at a Christchurch hotel. Last night the radio announcer was relaying messages from distraught families who couldn't find their loved ones, while all night the flattened buildings were being searched for more victims. Happily there were quite a number found to be alive, but still there are cries from those who are trapped. There have had to be amputations in order to free some people but at least they are still alive - sadly there are a lot of people missing. There are a large number of after-shocks, some as high as 4.7. Thankyou for your concern - Moira in New Zealand. -----Original Message----- From: nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Diane K. 3. Thanks, Sharon. Genealogy needs to include family history as well, and this is an interesting look at how things were done. Another topic I find quite interesting is how food was stored before refrigeration. Were our ancestors really eating rotten meat filled with spices to disguise the taste? Or were they using other methods like drying and smoking? Diane in Seattle > A blog that I did recently is not directly about genealogy, but may > interest some. 1. [NIR-DOWN] Gardening in the early 18th C.
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. A blog that I did recently is not directly about genealogy, but may interest some. My brother Struan, a part-time, organic gardener, introduced me to a couple of old books on gardening practices, one published in 1802 and one in 1885. Both books give us remarkable insights into how crops were raised, and in reading them, what can we can apply to today. The blog has links to where the books can be found on the internet. You can find this blog at: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2011/02/organic-gardening-advice-from-1802.html Enjoy, Sharon Oddie Brown -- Sharon Oddie Brown, Roberts Creek, BC, Canada. 1. [NIR-DOWN] Thomas Boyd Higginson of Canada 1958
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. During my trip to Scotland, Ireland and USA in 2010, I found the book Descendants of Reverend Thomas Higginson, written by Thomas Boyd Higginson, 1958. The book covers the family of Rev Thomas Higginson who married Mary Boyd, the daughter of Archibald Boyd. It would appear Rev Thomas was born about 1700, as he entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1718. However no date was given for the marriage of Rev Thomas and Mary. It only records 3 children being born to them - a small number for the period - William Higginson (no date), Boyd Higginson (b 1745) and Judith Higginson (b 1739). So I would estimate that there marriage took place in the mid or late 1730's. It is know that Rev Thomas Higginson was born in Ballinderry about 12 kms NW of Lisburn in County Antrim. It does not indicate when he joined the Church of Ireland and became a minister, but he was curate of Tickmacrevan (Glenarm) in 1728 and Curate of Cairncastle from 1731 to at least 1768. So I am assuming that this Mary Boyd's family came from eastern County Antrim from one of the Boyd families in the Larne to Glenarm area who I have not yet found. The family in the book spans 250 years. I would like to be able to contact the author of this book, Thomas Boyd Higginson, but from some of the references I assume that he has died some decades ago. So does anyone on this list know his children or grandchildren, so that I may be able to correspond with them about this family. ? Thank you. Mike Boyd Chairman House of Boyd Society

    1. [NIR-DOWN] BOYLE County Down (?)
    2. Marlene Shipman
    3. Kia Ora Greetings from New Zealand I'm hoping someone on list may be 1. researching BOYLE from Co Down 2. be able to help with a search of microfilm from a Church or gravestones or ANYTHING! 3. may be searching Presbyterian Church records and could eliminate some churches for me. I have; A;EXANDER BOYLE born c 1805 Co Down son of John & Margaret Boyle. Married to Lucinda CEAHY or Sloan.  Emigrated to New Zealand, departing London Sept 1865,  where he died 1881 aged 76. He was known to be a "cripple" maybe a soldier or victim of an accidebt otr illness??   Known children of Alexander & Lucinda were; William Henry born c.1838 Newtownards Margaret born c. 1840 Co Down Sarah born c. 1844 Co Down Mary born c. 1845 Co Down   There's a possibility of another Alexander Boyle born c. 1825 who may be a son/cousin . There is a grand daughter also named Sarah Boyle born/baptised  c. 1860 Co Down. The info above is from Emigration records or NZ Death Certs. Sarah 1844 married Thomas McClune MILLER from Ballyblack (Grey Abbey) in New Zealand. Margaret 1840 married Joseph HALL from Co Armagh in New Zealand. There is no record of Lucinda being in New Zealand so possibly died before 1865? Any help, ideas where to search, clues as to whether other family may have been left behind, would be most gratefully received. Thanks Dale

    3. Thankyou all for your kind emails regarding various Moffat families and spellings. William who married Agnes O'Neill [my previous email] gave his Mother's maiden name as "Agnes WATSON". I have been searching full-time for months but I can't find a William Moffat or Moffett who married an Agnes Watson in Ireland. There are one couple in Scotland who fit the bill but their families are too old. Many thanks from Moira.
