Mike I may have this info for you still working on it. Will try & get it to you this weekend. -----Original Message----- From: boyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Boyd Sent: Friday, March 25, 2011 1:35 AM To: nir-down@rootsweb.com; irl-antrim-L@rootsweb.com; boyd@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOYD] John Boyd of Parish of Shankill, Co Armagh & Jane Bell of Kilmore Townland, Par. of Shankill, Co Down According to Chapter V, The Boyd and Bell Families, pp 173- 202, John Boyd and Jane Bell were married at the Quaker meeting house in Lurgan on 28 January 1708. Their marriage certificate states that both John and Jane are residents of the Parish of Shankill. Three-fourth of this parish (7.7 square miles), including the town of Lurgan, is in County Armagh; the remainder (2.6) square miles) is in the County Down. The boundaries of County Down are such that a small finger, about three-fourth of a mile wide, juts westward to the shore of Lough Neagh between Armagh and Antrim. This small strip of land, which comprises the townland of Kilmore, falls within the Parish of Shankill. John Boyd lived in the County Armagh section of this parish, the Bells within the small County Down portion. John Boyd was estimated to have been born about 1685, but no location or parents were recorded for him. Unfortunately, the marriage certificate does not give the names of the groom's or bride's parents. It is suspected that Elizabeth Boid, as the name is spelled in the first line, is John Boyd's mother, and Tamar Boid a sister, aunty, or other close relative. John's father, whose name has not been ascertained, may have been deceased because no male Boyd signed the certificate as a witness to the ceremony. Ann Bell's parents were William Bell and his wife names is just given as Ann - with no surname. Jane Bell is listed as the first daughter of William and Ann Bell and being born in the parish Aghagallan, County Antrim, while the 2 brothers and fifth daughter are all recorded as being born at Killmore. With three daughters not being listed. A second Bell family of Simon Bell and his wife Ann Crookes are listed as being in Killmore townland. This Simon was Jane Bell's uncle and brother of William Bell. I am looking to see if any of the Bell families of Kilmore Townland, Parish of Shankill, County Down, may know whom John Boyd's parents were or any details on his and Jane Bell's family. The county division is in the river. I have a number of maps of Belfast from the period and before on the web at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andyairriess/sets/72157604322031931/ Most maps are at the bottom of the collection, scroll down Click on a thumbnail to make it bigger. To get the full-sized map (some are quite large), click the magnifying glass above right of the image and then click "All Sizes" in the top right of the page that displays. You can then choose the image size you want to see. The "original" size will give you the most detail. Most maps focus on the Sailortown part of Belfast, but you might get lucky. I recently added a 1832 map that, unfortunately, does not have street names, but it is interesting to see the growth of the city. Andy Airriess
In the recent past, my limited skill set when it came to web site design has meant that I found it challenging to share large files containing complex tables of information. Now, I have learned a new method - very basic to all of you who have more than a gnat's worth of know how when it comes to web design - which means that I can share a large and complex document quite simply. Today, I managed to post a pdf to my web site containing hundreds of pages and thousands of names of people and Irish townlands and such in one table. There are some names such as JACKSON or OLIVER that have received a significant amount of my attention over the years, but there are also dozens of other names that have also got dozens of entries connected with them, as well as thousands of others who at least receive cursory notice. I would be interested in knowing what you think - for example, how easy this table is to use. You can learn about it and also connect to it at: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2011/03/one-good-deed-deserves.html Enjoy, Sharon Oddie Brown -- Sharon Oddie Brown, Roberts Creek, BC, Canada. Hi Jean, This is a lot of work which you have completed, and generously shared. None of my Irish were in Liverpool longer than to change ships! Do you know where I could get a list of London irish born for 1851? I am looking for Granny Wild Irish Annie Carney (Kearney?), who married in London, c. early 1870's to Anthony John Saunders. I'm looking for her birthplace in Ireland, or her family. Helena Independent (Montana) Sept 18 1898 Death of Dr John Hall Belfast, Ireland, Sept17 The Rev Dr John Hall of New York, died this morning at Bangor, County Down. His health had been broken down for more than a year, but he had hoped to return to New York sortly and had already engaged passage on the steamer for himself and his wife.
Anaconda Standard July 8 1898 A William J. "W.J." Ennis of Madison Co (Ennis) Montana was murdered by a Mr Martin Peel. He was Episcopalian. Ennis, age 71, was born in Co Down about 1827 and emigrated at about age 14. He did railroading in Michigan and Chicago, before going to Colorado, then Montana. Very successful freighter, farmer and merchant. Survived by wife and three children: W.J. Ennis, Mrs C.W. Chowning and Miss Kitty Haines Ennis (adopted). Long article.....let me know if anyone wants more. Nan PS IGI gives his wife as Katherine Shriver of Oneida Ohio but it also incorrectly (apparently) gives his birth as Mar 17 1828 in Oneida Ohio. Marriage in Oneida on 05 Aug 1861

About 1,000 County Down births entries, have been added to my website, each entry giving the childs name, where born, fathers name and mothers maiden name. Information on the births now made easier, thanks to Eddie Williams. The website search engine has been a bit slow in picking up the new material, but these can be viewed by going to "The County Down Births,1865/75" on the website index bar, as the birth sections are all in alphabetical order, the last added are names beginning with W, X or Y, more will be added next week Raymond, on behalf of Eddie http://www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com
Raymond, You have done a wonderful job on your website! I remember when you first started it. Do you know if anyone is working on the births & deaths of Bangor Parish, or Bangor itself? I'm interested in the 1800-1850 time period. My John Kelley/Kelly was born about 1810 and his son John R. Kelley/Kelly was born in March 1845....somewhere in Bangor Parish. John senior's wife Mary Crozier died in Bangor 23 Aug 1847 and is buried in her family's plot in the Bangor Abbey Graveyard. Her parents were James and Jane Crozier. Thanks, Carole Hammond in wet Gresham, Oregon

Recently I have been intrigued about how memory works, and particularly how it works when we construct stories that include both personal and national memories. I have recently written a couple of blogs about this. The first is about how personal memory works. See it at: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2011/03/memory-is-like-water.html The second pertains more to Irish family history: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2011/03/memory-is-like-water-part-2.html Leave a comment on the blog site, or email me if you'd like to let me know what you think. Although the "Emerald Isle" is divided into two regions, representatives from both Northern Irelandand the Republic of Ireland share a common goal of re-connecting their homelands with their scattered “diaspora.” “Our diaspora is hugely important to us, not least our diaspora here in the United States. Twelve percent of the population of the United States is Irish-American,” said Michael Collins, Ireland's ambassador to the U.S., at a luncheon held in Atlanta to celebrate the opening of Ireland’s new consulate general in Atlanta. http://www.globalatlanta.com/article/24585/
Hello Everyone, I am new to this list and I am hoping that I'll be able to find some information on a couple of ancestors. I am searching for two brothers, Thomas and William Gordon. They emigrated to New Zealand around 1840-1842 from Northern Ireland. I have found immigration papers in Sydney, Australia which I believe relate to Thomas and William. Thomas's record states that Thomas came from "Moran" Co. Down. I think that it is possible that it was Mourne. They were both single at the time of their departing Ireland. I believe that Thomas was born about 1812/1813 and that William was born about 1815/1817. Thomas's death notice in Auckland, NZ, 1872, asks that Newry papers take note. Their parents were Jane and James Gordon (although for some time we thought that the father was a Thomas). As most of us researching this family live in Australia and NZ, we would be grateful for any information or advice on how to proceed to find anything about the brothers' lives and family in Irelan! d. Thanks, Heather.
