Chicago Tribune Dec 28 1908 CUPID SHOWS OCCULT POWER Guides Chicago Man to Steamer Where He Meets Unexpectedly His Old Sweetheart; Wedding Follows James Stevens, said to be an employe in a public building in Chicago, went to Ellis Island last Monday, and the first person he saw landing from one of the liners was his old sweetheart coming from Ireland in search of news of him. They married and are now on their way to Chicago. Stevens promised to spend his vacation with James Ward at Terryville, Conn., and on the way he planned to stop at Ellis Island to meet Frank Ford, an old friend in Dublin. When he arrived at Terryville he was accompanied by a bride, who was Miss Anna McAuley. Seven years ago in County Down, Ireland, he had been ready to marry her, but stern relatives, including a brother who was a priest and an uncle who was a bishop forbade the wedding. In despair Stevens left Ireland and came to Chicago.
CHicago Tribune May 10 1873 Mr John Reid, the senior partner of the firm of Reid and Sherwin, the well-known proprietors of the great slaughtering and packing establishment on Archer avenue, died suddenly yesterday morning at 5 o'clock, at this residence on West Taylor Street. He had been in poor health for some time past, but not to a degree which alarmed his friends. On Wednesday he was suddenly seized with a congestive chill, which resulted in his death. Mr Reid was born in Newry Co Down, Ireland, emigrating to America about 15 years ago. In conjunction with his partner, Mr Sherwin, he had contributed largely to the development and growth of one of the most important interests in Chicago, and at the time of his death was at the head of one of the largest and best conducted establishments of the kind in the world. His death will be sincerely mourned not only by the hundreds of employees connected with the business, but by an extended circle of friends, by whom he was held in the highest esteem. He leaves a wife and several children in comfortable circumstances.
Chicago Tribune Dec 7 1913 BRENNAN, Charlotte Higgins Brennan, beloved wife of James J. beloved mother of Mrs Margaret Beazley, Mrs Thomas F. McCarthy, Vincent, Selina, and the late John E Brennan. Funeral from late residence, 523 W 37th St., Tuesday, Dec 9, at 9am to Nativity church, where high mass will be celebrated, thence by carriages to Mount Olivet. Member of Nativity court No 14 W.C.O.F. Notes: This family emigrated from Kilkeel Co Down. Charlotte was the daughter of Francis Higgins and Margaret McCartan. On the 1900 US Chicago Census she gave her birth as June 1851 Charlotte and her daughter Selina ( a teacher) were passengers on the US California that sailed from Londonderry on 29th of August 1908 to New York. They were returning to their Chicago home on 37th St. Charlotte gave 1869 as yr of arrival in the US on her 1900 census, husband James yr of arrival was 1867 likely visited family in Co Down although the passenger manifest is incomplete as to that detail.
This is almost certainly a Kilkeel connected family. This James Brennan is likely the husband of the Charlotte Higgins who was born in Kilkeel (per Fiona's research) about 1840, daughter of Francis John Higgins and Margaret McCartan. Chicago Tribune Dec 22 1916 Brennan James J dearly beloved husband of the late Charlotte Higgins Brennan, fond father of Mrs Margaret Beazley, Mrs T. F. McCarthy, Vincent C. and Selina A Brennan. I just did a piece on my blog about how a maintaining a web page can help with genealogy research, be fun, and only be a little bit overwhelming (when it comes to the work of keeping it up). Hello David, Thanks again for your help. I was just looking through my info and found the death notice for Hugh McGivern which states that he passed away at Ballyalicock which was just outside of Newtownards. It is interesting that the official records state that he was in Belfast. Thanks again. He was a blacksmith, and was living in Belfast at time of death. Nothing more regards the address. There are four others in the grave, but they only have the names of one. Elizabeth McGivern, bur 10 June 1902 others buried on 22 May 1889, 3 January 1890, and 21 November 1891. Their records start in 1880, but the earlier ones are at present with PRONI (Public Record Office Northern Ireland). They will be returned to them when PRONI have finished whatever they are doing to them. I think they are being digitised. She suggests that these registers may have more details on the three unknown people. I have looked on site, and there is NO headstone. There is no marker of any description. The only way to find it is by looking at the grave next to it, people called Mercer, which has a marker and the stonemason has engraved the location on the side, 6-178. I will see what I can find in PRONI, and the NoIFHS, but it will probably be next week before I can manage it. When are you planning to visit here? In 1999 I was able to get details from the Burial Registers at Movilla cemetery from the Borough Council Office via email. The person who replied with information was Joan Rush. I don't see her name listed on the website, but you can contact the Ards Borough Council from this page: http://www.ards-council.gov.uk/contact-us/index.php Bobbie -----Original Message----- From: nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nir-down-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Louise Jackson Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2011 5:10 AM To: nir-down@rootsweb.com Subject: [NIR-DOWN] Movilla Burying Grounds Hello Everyone, My grandparents came to Canada from Newtownards.I will be visiting Ireland shortly and I would like to find the McGivern family plot at Movilla. Hello David, My Great Grandfather, Hugh McGivern died on March 20 1915 and he is supposed to be buried in the family. Any help that you can give me is very much appreciated. Thank-you for your interest. If you can give me a date I can check with the local registrar's office for a burial location. If I remember correctly their records only start around 1886. Having said that, the NoIFHS have grave records which I will check which should save a lot of searching on foot. I live one mile from Movilla. Hello I am a newbie and was wondering if anyone could advise me. A relative was left properties in Newry and at her death they were passed on to someone else, in 1924. My question is is there anyway of finding out who left her the properties in the first place it must have been sometime between 1860 and 1890 I reckon. We have no parents name of even a date of birth, just a date of death and the will. Are there any achives for things like this? Any advise is appreciated, Regards Annemarie
Ancestry have now put Liverpool Parish Records on their site so for anyone who's Irish Ancestors went to Liverpool (like mine) they are wonderful. I only started looking yesterday and found 5 Birth dates, 3 marriage dates, a second husband for a Great-Aunt and the name of my G-G-Grandfathers sister (finally, I had no siblings for him till yesterday, hurray). All of these Ancestors are of Irish descent but I've never been able to find out who their mother was so this is really looking hopeful. Seeing the actual records is wonderful but what is even better is seeing who the Godparents are on the Baptism Records and the hand written notes on some of the Birth Records showing who the person later married and the date. I'm really hoping these new records will help me break down a few big brick walls (no conversation out of me today then, lol). Some of the names were completely wrong but once you check for parents or spouses you know they are yours. Kate FIELD

Anyone researching this family. Regards, Victoria
